Communication systems and methods are disclosed that utilize Probability Amplitude Shaping (PAS) and Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM) to transmit short block-length messages. While capacity-approaching codes, such as Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, Turbo codes, and Polar codes, can achieve data rates approaching the Shannon limit at large block-lengths, the performance of these codes can deteriorate dramatically at short block-lengths. Communication systems configured in accordance with various embodiments of the invention can utilize classical codes to encode short block-length messages to achieve communication rates exceeding Polyanskiy's Random Coding Union bound. In several embodiments, message bits are transmitted using a TCM system in which message bits that have been previously encoded by an error detection code are encoded using a convolutional code (CC). In a number of embodiments, the error detection code and the CC are obtained via a joint optimization with respect to a Frame Error Rate bound.

Systems and methods for communicating using short messages

A high throughput communication apparatus which provides low frame error rates (FER). Error checking encoder and decoders which each comprise a plurality of short blocklength error checking encoders or decoders, respectively, in parallel, coupled through common incremental redundancy. Short-blocklength codes are utilized to achieve communication capacity with incremental redundancy. The system can transmit and decode a large number of short-blocklength codewords in parallel, while it delivers incremental redundancy, without feedback, only to the decoders that need incremental redundancy.

High throughput communication system

Low density parity check (LDPC) decoders are described utilizing a sequential schedule called Zigzag LBP (Z-LBP), for a layered belief propagation (LBP) architecture. Z-LBP has a lower computational complexity per iteration than variable-node-centric LBP (V-LBP), while being simpler than flooding and check-node-centric LBP (C-LBP). For QC-LDPC codes where the sub-matrices can have at most one '1' per column and one '1' per row, Z-LBP can perform partially-parallel decoding with the same performance as C-LBP. The decoder comprises a control circuit and memory coupled to a parity check matrix. Message passage is performed within Z-LBP in a first direction on odd iterations, and in a second direction on even iterations. As a result, a smaller parity check matrix can be utilized, while convergence can be more readily attained. The inventive method and apparatus can also be implemented for partially-parallel architectures.

Lower-complexity layered belief propagation decoding LDPC codes

Low density parity check (LDPC) codes (LDPCCs) have an identical code blocklength and different code rates. At least one of the rows of a higher-rate LDPC matrix is obtained by combining a plurality of rows of a lower-rate LDPC matrix with the identical code blocklength as the higher-rate LDPC matrix.

Variable-rate low-density parity check codes with constant blocklength

A method and apparatus is disclosed for processing two or more encoded signals received over a multi-channel communication system to cancel or mitigate coupling and the effects of the channel on the two or more encoded signals. In one embodiment a multi-channel communication system utilizes DMT processing and some form of encoding, such as block coding or convolutional coding. To recover the transmitted signal, processing in the receiver may comprise MIMO processing in conjunction with decoding. The MIMO processing may be configured with decision directed processing to thereby generate one or more cancellation signals based on isolated error terms. Decoding occurs on encoded signals after MIMO processing. Memory may be interspersed or available throughout the system to store incoming symbols that have not yet undergone decoding and MIMO processing. Decoding and MIMO processing may occur sequentially through the channels.
