Stabilization of particle reagents

A luminescent specific binding assay method is used for detecting an analyte in whole blood. The assay is a heterogeneous sandwich or competitive assay in which a first binding reagent is labeled with a luminescent photoprotein and an immobilized second binding reagent serves as a capture reagent. The luminescent photoprotein, upon activation, emits light which may be detected by a luminescence detector. The assay is rapid, sensitive and may be performed on small sample volumes.

Porous organic microspheres for use in HPLC are formed by coacervating a colloidal silica sol in a uniform mixture of the sol and a polymerizable organic material. The silica particles which formed the sol are removed from the microspheres with ammonium bifluoride. The remaining organic microspheres are rigid, have uniform pore sizes and distribution, and do not swell or shrink in the presence of the solvents used in HPLC.

The porosity of a porous silica body is increased in a controlled manner by contacting the body with an effective amount of ammonium bifluoride.

Surface-stabilized porous silica having discontinuous metal oxide layer over the silica, chromatographic packings based on the metal-stabilized silica and processes for their preparation, are provided. The chromatographic packings so provided have increased life time.
