A method for continuous bulk polymerization is disclosed that includes providing a planetary roller extruder having a plurality of planetary roller zones, introducing an acrylate monomer, a di-vinyl monomer, and a hydroxyl functional acrylic monomer into the planetary roller extruder, introducing an initiator into the planetary roller extruder for initiation of a free-radical polymerization of the acrylate monomer, the di-vinyl monomer, and the hydroxyl functional acrylic monomer to form an acrylic polymer, maintaining the temperature of the free-radical polymerization in the planetary roller extruder below 240&#xb0; C., and discharging a portion of the acrylic polymer from the planetary roller extruder, and returning the portion of the acrylic polymer to one or more of the plurality of planetary roller zones.

Continuous bulk polymerization of vinyl monomers

A continuous process for preparing a pressure sensitive adhesive using a planetary roller extruder is described. The continuous process includes introducing at least one non-thermoplastic elastomer into a planetary roller extruder and initially compounding the non-thermoplastic elastomer in the planetary roller extruder to form an initially masticated non-thermoplastic elastomer. Then, a solid raw material, a liquid material, or both are introduced into the initially masticated non-thermoplastic elastomer in the planetary roller extruder, and subsequent compounding of the initially masticated non-thermoplastic elastomer with these additional components occurs to form an adhesive composition.

Process for preparing adhesive using planetary extruder

A process for preparing a pressure sensitive adhesive using a modified planetary roller extruder is described. The process in accordance with one aspect of the invention is a continuous process that includes introducing primary raw materials comprising a non-thermoplastic elastomer into a planetary roller extruder, introducing a heat-activatable crosslinker into the planetary roller extruder for mixing with the primary raw materials, and compounding the primary raw materials and the heat activatable crosslinker to form an adhesive composition while maintaining the temperature of the adhesive composition between about 25&#xb0; C. and about 100&#xb0; C. The non-thermoplastic elastomer is masticated during compounding and at least some of the heat-activatable crosslinker remains generally unactivated and is available for later activation.

A process for preparing a pressure sensitive adhesive using a modified planetary roller extruder is described. The process in accordance with one aspect of the invention includes introducing primary raw materials including a non-thermoplastic elastomer into a feeding section of the modified planetary roller extruder, conveying the raw materials from the feeding section to a compounding section of the modified planetary roller extruder, continuously mixing the primary raw materials in the compounding section to produce a homogeneous adhesive composition. The adhesive composition may be applied to a web-form material. The compounding section of the modified planetary roller extruder includes a main spindle surrounded by and intermeshed with a plurality of planetary spindles at least one of which is a double transversal mixing spindle having a plurality of back-cut helical flights.

A process for producing polymer and more particularly adhesive using a recirculating loop reactor. In one embodiment the reactor includes one or more mixers to mix feed stock with the polymerized material recirculating in the reactor. In another embodiment a planetary roller extruder (PRE) may be used for this purpose. In still another embodiment, a combination of one or more static mixers and one or more PREs may be used.

A primer coating composition for use in polyolefin-backed pressure sensitive tape comprising a maleic anhydride modified chlorinated polyolefin covalently bonded to a maleic anhydride modified A-B-A block copolymer, where A is a thermoplastic polystyrene and B is a rubber midblock, by means of a crosslinking agent capable of reacting with the maleic anhydride functional groups in said polyolefin and said block copolymer a polyolefin-backed pressure sensitive tape employing the primer coating composition; and a method for manufacturing a polyolefin-backed pressure sensitive tape employing the primer coating composition are described.

An adhesive tape comprising a foundation layer including a thermoplastic resin applied to the surface of a support and a layer of a natural rubber pressure sensitive adhesive on said foundation layer; and a reinforced strapping tape for use in packaging appliances wherein the reinforced strapping tape comprises a support; a release agent on one surface of the support; a laminating adhesive on the opposite surface of the support; reinforcing strands applied on the laminating adhesive; a hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive applied on the reinforcing strands; and a natural rubber pressure sensitive adhesive applied on the hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive.
