This invention relates to a dye-donor element for thermal dye transfer comprising a support having thereon a dye layer comprising an image dye dispersed in a binder, and wherein the binder has been coated from an aqueous solution and consists essentially of a hydrophilic polymer, said element also having thereon at least one underlayer consisting of a swellable polymer located between said support and said dye layer.

Underlayer of dye-donor element for thermal dye transfer systems

A flexible paint-coated film which has a basecoat-clearcoat appearance and good mar-resistance is prepared by coating a polyurethane paint layer on a flexible polymeric carrier film. Over the paint layer is coated a clear polyurethane layer. Over the latter is coated a relatively thin layer of a clear polyurethane composition obtained by the reaction of a polyisocyanate with a reactive poly(dialkylsiloxane). Preferably, the latter has at least two active-hydrogen-containing groups, which are hydroxyl, mercapto, primary amino or secondary amino groups. To manufacture the film the compositions are coated on the carrier film by a laminar flow process using an extrusion coating hopper. The resulting film has outstanding gloss and beauty and improved mar resistance. Certain embodiments of the new film can be thermoformed, stretched and bonded adhesively to automobile body parts, boats, or household appliances and other substrates as protective and decorative coverings having a basecoat-clearcoat appearance. Others can be applied to such substrates without substantial stretching as toning and styling stripes.

Basecoat-clearcoat film

A protective and decorative, stretchable, thermoplastic sheet material for bonding by thermoforming to automobile body panels and other articles comprises a polyester carrier film coated with an aqueous polyurethane paint composition. By coating the carrier film with a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of ethylene with an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid such as acrylic acid the adhesion of the paint to the carrier film is markedly improved. Especially significant is the improvement in adhesion to polyester carrier films of aqueous polyurethane metallic paints in which aluminum flakes are dispersed.

Paint coated sheet material with adhesion promoting composition

A protective and decorative sheet material, such as a paint-coated film, which is bonded by an adhesive layer and vacuum thermoforming to an exterior automobile body panel as a substitute for spray painted finishes, can develop surface roughness when exposed to excessive heat for extended periods of time. This defect is unexpectedly reduced or eliminated by employing a foamed, pressure-sensitive adhesive layer.

Process for the manufacture of paint-coated film and product produced

Photographic assemblages, elements, receiving elements and cover sheets are described employing a neutralizing layer comprising about 75 to about 150 meq. of acid/m.sup.2 of element for neutralizing an alkaline processing composition. The neutralizing layer, timing layer or layer adjacent thereto also contains about 1 to about 10 meq./m.sup.2 of oxalic acid, or an acid salt thereof, to minimize sensitometric changes that occur with keeping.
