A dryer fabric for use with drying drums in a dryer section of a paper forming machine wherein a plurality of transversely extending filament yarns interconnect a plurality of transversely extending filament yarns to form the dryer fabric as a continuous loop. The dryer fabric is formed with a plurality of silicone strips along its edge portions to prevent wear due to abrasion and heat, the silicone rubber encapsulates end portions and edge ones of the yarns forming beads along the outer surfaces of the dryer fabric which separate the yarns from direct contact with the drums. The dryer fabric is capable of operating at temperatures of between 350.degree. to 500.degree. F. in a paper forming machine without accelerated degradation.

Dryer fabric having an abrasion resistant edge

A dryer fabric for use with a dryer section of a paper forming machine wherein a plurality of transversely extending pintles interconnect a plurality of transversely extending coils to form the dryer fabric as a continuous loop. The dryer fabric is stabilized and its edge portions are protected from wear by a U.V. silicone rubber which encapsulates end portions of the pintles and coils and forms a bead along outer surfaces of the dryer fabric. The dryer fabric is capable of operating at temperatures of between 350.degree. to 500.degree. F. in a paper forming machine without accelerated degradation.

Dryer fabric edge seal

A papermaking fabric formed of warp and weft yarns woven endless in a multi-layer uneven weave pattern and heat set to produce set floats in the warp yarns of one length which appear on one surface of the fabric and floats of a different length which appear on a second surface of the fabric. A low profile seam for joining opposite ends of the fabric to form an endless papermaking fabric. The seam is formed by turning warp yarns back and reweaving them lengthwisse into each of the ends with weft yarns in such a manner as to present appropriate ones of the floats on appropriate fabric surfaces. At the same time, loops are formed along the ends in spaced manner. The weft adjacent the end comprise undersized yarns which are woven with the warp yarns to provide longitudinal space along the warp yarns and between the undersized weft yarns. This allows the formation of small loops at the ends by crowding the small weft yarns.

Woven papermaking fabric having low profile seam

A woven paper making fabric (A) is disclosed having a profiled permeability characteristic which varies across the width of the fabric yet the tensions are relatively uniform across the width of the fabric. The fabric includes a plurality of warp yarns (20, 22, 24, 26) extending in a machine direction and a plurality of weft yarns (28, 30, 32) extending in a cross-machine direction in the fabric woven with the warp yarns. The weft yarns and warp yarns are woven to provide at least two layers (60, 62, 64) in the fabric. A number of unwoven fabric closure elements (B) are bound between the weft yarns of two of the fabric layers (60, 62) extending in the machine direction adjacent the lateral edges (42, 44) of the fabric (A). The closure elements (B) extend through the fabric parallel to the edges in a generally straight configuration between the two fabric layers (60, 62) in a generally tensionless state so as not to effect the tension of the weave of the fabric. A uniform weave tension exists across the width of said fabric. The closure elements block the flow of air through the fabric to reduce the permeability of the fabric at the lateral edges (46, 48) and provide the desired permeability profile.

Paper making fabric having a reduced permeability profile

A woven dryer fabric A having a low fabric permeability characteristic is disclosed having multiple layers in which an intermediate layer includes cabled multi-filament weft elements (B) consisting of low-melt monofilament strands twisted together which are melted in the fabric to effect closure of the fabric mesh. In the weaving process, the cabled multi-filament weft elements have a softer texture which renders them more flexible and allows a more dense mesh count to provide for greater pre-melt void coverage. After melt, the multi-filaments become fused and flow into the void areas of the shed for more complete void coverage.

Woven low permeability fabric and method

A non-woven helical dryer belt is illustrated having a desired permeability profile which includes lateral zones 42 and 44 of reduced permeability and a medial zone 46 of increased permeability. The helical drive belt is made by joining a number of helix strips (20) together lengthwise and having the helix strips extend crosswise the fabric. A base monofilament element (40) extends across the entire width of the drive belt to impart a base permeability characteristic to the fabric. At opposing lateral edges of the fabric, an edge filler strip is inserted which reduces the permeability of the fabric in the lateral zones (42, 44). The height of the base and edge monofilament elements is made such that they do not overlap one another and are maintained in their side by side arrangement in the lateral zones of reduced permeability. A contoured monofilament edge element (C) is also disclosed which produces a very low permeability in the lateral zones (42, 44) by incorporating contoured edges (60) which protrude into the crevice spaces of the winding spaces to more fully block the air flow in the lateral zones.

Helical dryer belt with profiled permeability

A low permeability dryer fabric and method are disclosed which include a helical dryer fabric comprised of helix strips (12) whose winding arcs (16) are intermeshed and joined together by a composite pintle (A) to define a pintle joint. The composite pintle includes a polyester core (B) and an outer low-melt polymeric sheath (C) which has been heat softened and deformed and exhibits a profile (30) which occupies void areas in the mesh of the helical fabric in the area of the pintle joint.

Dryer fabric having reduced permeability in the area of the pintle joint

A fluid permeable fabric is disclosed having particular advantages as a dryer fabric for papermaking is disclosed. The fabric includes a number of helix A extending cross-wise in the fabric and joined together along the length dimension by pintles 38. Crevice spaces 40 formed by intermeshing bend portions extending into the loop openings C are closed by a contoured filler strip B. The contoured filler strip occupies the loop openings and includes contoured edges 56 which penetrate and occupy a substantial portion of the crevice spaces. A fabric having a low permeability is thus provided. An enlarged heat radiating surface 52 facing the paper side 39 of the fabric increases the heat transfer occurring in the paper web W to expedite drying. Crevice space 40 and tapered edges 56 of the filler element provide a guiding function which facilitates filler insertion in the loop openings.
