The present invention is directed to an improved system for controlled release of a bone growth promoting compound and to a flowable composition for its formation. The flowable composition is composed of a bone growth promoting compound, a thermoplastic polymer and an organic solvent. The flowable composition is capable of forming a biodegradable and/or bioerodible microporous, solid polymer matrix. The matrix is useful as an implant in patients (humans and animals) for delivery of a bone growth promoting compound to certain tissues.

The channel is in fluid communication with an inlet at its upstream end and curves to an outlet at its downstream end. The outlet is in fluid communication with an air atomization nozzle. A mixing surface is capable of rotation with respect to the housing and the channel is open to the mixing surface.

The apparatus comprises a mixing chamber and a screw means, disposed within the chamber, for mixing and transporting material downstream to an air atomization nozzle. Another aspect of this invention is a method for mixing and spraying a slurry. The method comprises introducing and propelling a particulate solid along a mixing chamber. A liquid is introduced downstream from the introduction of the solid, a sufficient distance such that no substantial liquid backs up to the introduction of the solid. The solid and liquid are mixed to form a slurry, substantially in the absence of air. The slurry is propelled downstream, substantially in the absence of air, and atomized.

Apparatus and method for mixing and spraying a slurry

A process is described for infusing an additive into a polymer using a compressed fluid that is normally a gas at room temperature and pressure. The additive must have some degree of solubility in the compressed fluid and the solution of compressed fluid and additive must have some degree of solubility in the polymer. In accordance with the process, the solution of the normally gaseous fluid and additive and the polymer are brought into contact under pressure until a desired quantity of the solution is absorbed into the polymer. The compressed fluid then is diffused from the polymer leaving additive infused within the polymer. The process can be used, for example, to add a colorant to a polymer or to add a biocide, insect repellant, medication or other additives to a polymer for subsequent sustained release, or to introduce monomer and a polymerization initiator into a polymer for subsequent polymerization.
