An apparatus (16) is provided for winding inextensible flexible elongate material, such as cable (15), on a carcass (10) of a body while maintaining the tension on the elongate material (15) substantially uniform. A shuttle (20) carries at least one compensator arm assembly (30,130) resiliently supporting a housing (44,144) having a sheave (50,150) in line with an energy-dissipator (80,180) on the side of the sheave (50,150) closest to the carcass so that the elongate material (15) being fed from a spool (28) under tension and passing over the sheave (50,150) as the shuttle (20) is rotating around the torus-shaped body will apply the elongate material to the carcass (10) under substantially uniform tension as the arm assembly (30,130) stores up elongate material (15) during periods of low material demand and pays out elongate material during periods of high material demand.

A method and apparatus for forming the mounting portion of a sidewall protector includes a rigid mold (19) in which a sidewall protector (12) can be formed and a separate plate assembly (29,31) which is moveable toward the rigid mold to form the mounting holes (10), central opening 11, and a pair of annular ribs (14,16) on opposite sides of the sidewall protector. Movement of the plate (32) is done by a plurality of springs (47) each positioned between the plate (32) and an enlarged head portion (48) of a pin (46). The springs are compressed by a linear actuator (43) and the pin (46) is connected to the mold (19) by a dowel (54) inserted through a hole (53) in the pin (46) to maintain the compression on the springs (47) . This apparatus permits the use of automated strip applying equipment for laying up the sidewall protector within the mold (19) while the plate assembly (29,31) accurately forms the mounting portion which includes the mounting holes (10), annular opening (11), and the annular ribs (14,16).

Date Jan. 22, 1981 A braking apparatus (36) is provided for a supply spool (30) whereby material (12) drawn from the spool (30) will have a relatively uniform tension. The braking apparatus (36) includes a follower roller (40) in contact with the material (12) on the spool (30) and a brake portion (38) in adjustably controlled braking contact with a brake rotor (102) mounted for rotation with the spool (30). The follower roller (40) follows the decrease in the diametral amount of material on the spool and simultaneously moves the brake portion (38) toward the center of the brake rotor (102) wherein a uniform braking force on the spool (30) is maintained. In one embodiment, the supply spool (30) is mounted on a shuttle (14) of a cable-winding apparatus so that as the shuttle (14) rotates, centrifugal force will act on the follower roller (40) to urge a roller (51) against the material (12) on the spool (30) and to move the brake portion (38) toward the center of the brake rotor (102) to maintain constant force on the material (12) being withdrawn from the spool (30 ).

Apparatus of forming the mounting portion of a sidewall protector

A heat exchanger core made up of a loose stack of heat exchange sheets is surrounded by a support frame which holds the sheets against separation. One end of the support frame is mounted on the engine body and restrained against vertical, fore-and-aft and sidewise movement relative to the engine body. The other end of the support frame is mounted on the engine body by a double pivot link assembly which restrains that end against vertical and sidewise movement but allows fore-and-aft movement. A simple expansion bellows joins the high-pressure air inlet of the heat exchanger to the engine body. A simple expansion bellows may be used to join either or both of the high-pressure air outlet and low-pressure hot exhaust gas inlet of the heat exchanger to the engine body.
