Olefine oxides are produced by contacting an olefine with oxygen in the presence of a silver containing catalyst and a chlorine-containing reaction modifier; the performance of the catalyst is improved by contacting it with a nitrate or nitrite forming substance for example nitric oxide.

Catalysts for the oxidation of alkenes to alkylene oxides comprise silver on supports having a surface area of 0.05 to 10 m.sup.2 /g, and at least 16 .mu.g equivalents per square meter of potassium together with rubidium and/or cesium.

Catalysts for the oxidation of alkenes to alkylene oxides comprise silver on a support of 0.05 to 10m.sup.2 /g surface area, a promoting amount of sodium and also potassium, rubidium and/or cesium.

Catalysts for the production of alkylene oxides

The selectivity of unstable alkali metal promoted silver containing olefin oxide production catalysts is restored by wetting them.
