Cold water-soluble PVOH/alkyl acrylate copolymers are provided with a substantially random distribution of monomers which is reflected in the polymer's cold water solubility, GPEC chromatograms and may be confirmed by CNMR. The product is particularly useful for films used in packaging and for encapsulating particulate products. Encapsulated products which may be provided include fertilizer or other agricultural products, pharmaceutical products, biomedical products and cosmetic products.

Cold water soluble polyvinyl alcohol/alkyl acrylate copolymers and films thereof

A water soluble film useful in unit-dose chemical packaging is disclosed. The film may include: a water soluble saccharide and a polyvinyl alcohol copolymer consisting essentially of: (a) from 80 to 99 mole percent of vinyl alcohol and vinyl ester monomer; and (b) from 1 to 20 mole percent of a pyrrolidone comonomer. Such compositions may be used to provide a water-soluble film simultaneously satisfying requirements in regard to water solubility, biodegradability, and physical properties, even when used for packaging of harsh, oxidizing chemicals.

PVP copolymer for harsh chemical packaging

Water soluble films and coatings herein address the problem of water insolubility, color formation, and brittleness upon exposure to oxidizing chemicals, including strong or aggressive oxidizing chemicals. The water soluble films or coatings may include a water soluble polymer and a reactive precursor, such as an alkanolamine or an alkyl alkanolamine. The reactive precursor is water soluble and reactive with oxidizing compounds. Water soluble films or coatings herein may also include a water soluble polymer and an additive mixture including an alkanolamine or an alkyl alkanolamine. The films or coatings, upon exposure to an oxidizing chemical for 8 weeks at 40&#xb0; C. and ambient humidity, may dissolve fully or achieve 90% dissolution at times of less than 10 minutes. The water soluble films and coatings may advantageously be used with oxidizing chemicals while maintaining water solubility, acceptable color, and flexibility, such as in unit dose packaging, even over extended exposure periods.

Stabilizer for aggressive chemicals packaging

A water soluble polyvinyl alcohol copolymer having a diad syndiotacticity of greater than about 60% and less than about 70%. In some embodiments, the water soluble polyvinyl alcohol copolymer is soluble in water at a concentration of at least 1 wt % at a temperature of less than 100&#xb0; C. In other embodiments, the composition is soluble in water at a concentration of at least 5 wt % at a temperature in the range from about 90&#xb0; C. to less than 100&#xb0; C. The high solubility of the high syndiotactic poly vinyl alcohols disclosed herein may provide various advantages as described herein, including ease of processing and decreased use of harmful solvents.

Epilatory compositions may be formed from: 40 to 80 wt % water; 5 to 30 wt % of a mixture of at least one polyvinyl alcohol and at least one polyvinyl alcohol copolymer; 1 to 15 wt % plasticizer, where the plasticizer is a linear or branched composition having from 3 to 15 wt % OH; and up to 40 wt % of one or more additives. Pore strip, keratonic plug removal, and other cosmetic applications may be formed from a similar composition, where the plasticizer is a linear, cyclic, or branched composition having greater than 25 wt % OH; and up to 40 wt % of one or more additives. The adhesive properties of the formulations may be tailored, where a low OH content may result in increased adhesion relative to plasticizers having a high OH content.

PVOH copolymers for personal care applications

A separator film for an electric battery is provided to substantially eliminate electric contact between an anode component and a cathode component. The film includes a vinyl alcohol copolymer with functional comonomer units such as sulfonic acid functionalized units or salts thereof. The films are desirable for use in battery separators because they exhibit superior resistance to degeneration by oxidation, enabling the manufacture of batteries with improved conductivity, longer discharge times, and longer cycle lives.

A chemical delivery product for delivering an oxidizing chemical into an aqueous system is disclosed. For instance, in one embodiment, a substrate containing an oxidizing chemical, such as trichloroisocyanuric acid, is coated with a water soluble polymer in order to prevent the oxidizing chemical from degrading prior to use and in order to facilitate handling. In accordance with the present disclosure, a neutralizing agent is contacted with the substrate in order to prevent the substrate from degrading the water soluble coating. In an alternative embodiment, a package is formed from a water soluble film forming composition combined with a base.

Chemical delivery product and process for making the same

A water-soluble film which comprises a saccharide component and a vinyl alcohol resin component, where the vinyl alcohol resin may include functional comonomer units such as sulfonic acid functional groups or salts thereof. Preferred are polyvinyl alcohol/2-methylacrylamido-2 methyl propane sulfonic acid resins (PVOH/AMPS) which may be purchased commercially with relatively higher or relatively lower characteristic viscosity. The films exhibit superior resistance to aggressive oxidizing chemicals and remain soluble in water after prolonged exposure thereto. The films are particularly useful for unit-dose packaging of chlorine-containing pool chemicals, such as trichloroisocyanuric acid.

Polyvinyl alcohol films with improved resistance to oxidizing chemicals

A sulfonic acid-functionalized vinyl alcohol copolymer is provided which is characterized by a substantial absence of compositional drift. The copolymer is produced by polymerization in two continuously-fed reaction zones such that the ratio of sulfonic acid-containing comonomer fed to the first reaction zone to the sulfonic acid-containing comonomer fed to the second reaction zone is within the range of about 55:45 to about 80:20. The resin is characterized by a resistance to irreversible dehydration upon exposure to harsh chemicals and by retention of hydroxide functionality upon aging. A resin composition comprising a copolymer lacking compositional drift is also provided for preparation of an oil and grease barrier coating, an oxidation resistant water soluble package, or a battery separator.

Vinyl alcohol copolymers for use in aqueous dispersions and melt extruded articles

In a method of preparing an aqueous dispersion selected from drilling fluids, hydraulic cement compositions, mineral pigment containing coatings, and papermaking furnishes or in a method of preparing a melt extrudate, the improvement comprising: a) producing a copolymer of vinyl alcohol (VOH) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid or a salt of such acid (AMPS) by steps including continuously feeding with agitation, vinyl acetate (VAM) and AMPS as comonomers, a free radical yielding polymerization initiator, and a solvent for said comonomers, initiator, and copolymer resulting from the copolymerization of said comonomers, maintaining the resulting reaction mass in said first reaction zone under polymerization conditions for a residence time sufficient for a major proportion of AMPS fed to said first reaction zone to polymerize, continuously feeding reaction mass from said first reaction zone with an additional supply of AMPS to a second reaction zone, maintaining the reaction mass in the second reaction zone for a residence time sufficient to polymerize a major proportion of the AMPS added to the second reaction zone, continuously withdrawing reaction mass from the second reaction zone, separating copolymer of VAM and AMPS from the latter reaction mass, and saponifying by hydrolysis and/or alcoholysis a major proportion of the acetate groups in said copolymer to form a copolymer of VOH and AMPS; and b) incorporating the saponified copolymer into the aqueous dispersion or melt extrudate.

A product comprising a cold water soluble film wherein: a) the film comprises a copolymer of vinyl alcohol (VOH) with a minor amount of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid in free acid form or as a salt of the free acid (AMPS); and b) the film has a harsh chemical dissolution time of less than about 80 seconds measured by the harsh chemical dissolution test method after 8 weeks.

In an aerosol spray composition suitable for coating automobile exteriors, where the aerosol composition is pressurized in a container with propellant and includes water and a polyvinyl alcohol composition, the improvement being that said polyvinyl alcohol composition includes: a) from 50 to 99 wt % of a partially hydrolyzing first polyvinyl alcohol resin having a degree of hydrolysis in the range of from about 80 to about 90 percent; and (b) from 1 to 50 wt % of a second polyvinyl alcohol resin having an elevated degree of hydrolysis.
