An electronic audio device with a digital audio output channel in which an amplifier output voltage is gradually ramped up and down to avoid causing a popping sound when the device is turned on and off. This is accomplished without employing any additional hardware, by incrementally changing a digital input word applied to a digital audio source, such as a DSP, so as to gradually change the amplifier output voltage between a minimum, such as zero volts, and a DC working voltage. On powering up, the amplifier is only turned on after the digital word is applied, but while it still results in a minimum amplifier output, and on powering down the amplifier is turned off after it's output has been ramped down, but before removing the digital input word. Sources and output channels can also be switched over by powering down, and then powering up, following the same method.

Prevention of audio pop in a digital audio device

A circuit for, and method of, detecting a signal level on a node and a mobile telephone device incorporating the circuit or the method. In one embodiment, the circuit includes: (1) a switch coupled between a voltage source and the node, (2) a pulse generator coupled to the switch and configured to generate a pulse to control the switch and (3) a detection circuit coupled to the node and configured to detect a signal level at the node on closure of the switch.

Low-power switch state detection circuit and method and mobile telephone incorporating the same

The present invention provides a portable electronic communication apparatus comprising two folder parts and/or a user-interface having two active modes of operation. The apparatus includes first and second members, with each having a first surface and an opposite second surface, with the user interface being provided at the first surface of the first member and connecting means for movably connecting the first and second members such that, in a first active mode of operation of the user-interface, the first and second members are positioned apart in an open position, and, in a second active mode of operation of the user-interface, the first and second members are positioned together in a first closed position such that the second surface of the first member is closed toward one surface of the other member. The invention provides for a handset in which the user display is provided on the outside when the handset is folded, thus allowing for the utilization of a single display with the handset in either the folded configuration or unfolded configuration, thus greatly enhancing reliability and cost-effectiveness as it greatly diminishes the need for material and technical development resources and the number of components.

Electronic apparatus having three modes of operation

A mobile telecommunications system has a handset and a headset for connection to the handset. The handset includes an RF transceiver for transmitting an outgoing call and receiving an incoming call, and a processor coupled to the RF transceiver that provides audio signals on a first audio path to an audio transducer in the handset and on a second audio path for an audio transducer in the headsets. The headset and handset include respective button switches arranged that the operation has the effect both of initiating and/or accepting a call, and of routing audio signals to the respective first or second audio paths. Embodiments are described including a separate switch for toggling the audio paths, and automatic sensors for detecting use of the headset or handset.

There is disclosed an input device including a display for displaying a plurality of icons, and a selector for selecting a displayed icon. At least a portion of the display is an electronic display. The device is adapted such that the selector moves relative to the display between a plurality of positions. At least one position corresponds to a displayed icon. The device further includes a function selection means. A function associated with an icon corresponding to a current position of the selector is selected when the function selection means is enabled.

Input device for portable handset

A system for, and method of, obscuring ambient noise. In one embodiment, the system includes: (1) a background sound generator, (2) a mixer coupled to the background sound generator and (3) a user interface, coupled to the mixer, that, upon a user command, causes the mixer to mix an output of the background sound generator with a transmitted signal. The background sound may be music, white noise, colored noise, out-of-phase ambient noise, simulated alternative ambient noise or any other suitable background sound. The system may be associated with a wireless handset, a wireline handset, central office equipment or any other suitable location or equipment.

There is disclosed a keypad apparatus and a method for determining the status of a keypad apparatus. In one embodiment, the keypad apparatus includes a keypad having a plurality of keys and a keypad matrix associated with the keypad and having a switch. The keypad apparatus also includes a cover moveable between an open and a closed position. The keypad apparatus still further includes a means for engaging that cooperates with and allows the switch to provide a status indicating a position of the cover.
