Described herein are examples of systems, methods, apparatuses, and devices which include a carbon nanotube structure. The carbon nanotube structure may include a first carbon nanotube with a first top surface and a first bottom surface. The carbon nanotube structure may include a second carbon nanotube vertically aligned with the first carbon nanotube. The second carbon nanotube may include a second top surface and a second bottom surface. The first carbon nanotube and the second carbon nanotube may be infiltrated with carbon by a mixture that is flowing. The mixture may include a first amount of ethylene and a second amount of hydrogen. The carbon nanotube structure may include a thin film extending along the first bottom surface and the second bottom surface.

Infiltrated carbon nanotubes

Embodiments disclosed are systems and methods for interfacing a metallic capillary in a microchannel of a metallic body. A method may include inserting a portion of the metallic capillary into a portion the microchannel of the metallic body, sintering the portion of the metallic capillary to the portion of the microchannel of the metallic body, disposing a sacrificial powder at least proximate to the metallic capillary and the metallic body after sintering the portion of the metallic capillary and the portion of the microchannel of the metallic body, and infiltrating at least the portion of the metallic capillary sintered to the portion of the microchannel of the metallic body with an infiltrant in the presence of the sacrificial powder disposed at least proximate to the metallic capillary and the metallic body.

Methods for interfacing a metallic microchannel and a metallic capillary

A method includes depositing a layer of alumina over a silicon substrate, providing a patterned photoresist over the layer of alumina, providing an iron catalyst layer over the patterned photoresist, providing the iron catalyst layer over an exposed portion of the alumina, providing a first iron catalyst site over a first portion of the alumina, providing a second iron catalyst site over a second portion of the alumina, growing a first carbon nanotube on the first iron catalyst site, growing a second carbon nanotube on the second iron catalyst site, infiltrating the first carbon nanotube and the second carbon nanotube with carbon, and cooling both the first carbon nanotube and the second carbon nanotube. The infiltrating strengthens the first carbon nanotube and the second carbon nanotube to not delaminate from the substrate when the first carbon nanotube and the second carbon nanotube are cooled.

A method, system, apparatus, and/or device to determine a condition of a user using a spectrometer with a collimator on a glass substrate. The method, system, apparatus, and/or device may include: a band comprising a shape, size, and flexibility designed for attaching the band to a body part of a user; a light source embedded in the band that emits light comprising a constituent wavelength that provides an indication of a feature of the body part; an optical sensor positioned in the band to receive the constituent wavelength; and a glass substrate oriented in the band to receive the light, the glass substrate comprising: an optical filter that comprises a passband to isolate the constituent wavelength from other wavelengths of the light; and a carbon nanotube grid structure comprising walls and through-channels, the carbon nanotube grid structure adhered to the glass substrate.

Miniaturized spectrometers on transparent substrates

A method, system, apparatus, and/or device to determine a condition of a user using a miniaturized collimator. The method, system, apparatus, and/or device may include: a carbon nanotube structure comprising a microtube that includes a set of aligned carbon nanotubes infiltrated by carbon and a through-channel, the carbon nanotube structure having a defined height to through-channel width aspect ratio, where: the defined height to through-channel width aspect ratio is based on a defined collimation to diffraction ratio; the set of aligned carbon nanotubes infiltrated by carbon is configured to absorb a first portion of light that travels through the through-channel at a first angle and impinges a side of a first through-channel portion; and the set of aligned carbon nanotubes infiltrated by the carbon is configured to allow a second portion of the light that enters the through-channel at a second angle to pass through the through-channel.

Miniaturized collimators

A method, system, apparatus, and/or device to determine a condition of a user using multiple sensors. The method, system, apparatus, and/or device may include: a band configured to extend at least partially around a body part of a user having a subdermal feature within body part; a light configured in the band to emit light into the body part; a miniaturized spectrometer positioned in the band to press against the body part to receive the light, where the miniaturized spectrometer comprises: an optical filter configured to isolate a relevant constituent wavelength of the light; a collimator configured to collimate the light; and an optical sensor configured to detect an intensity of the relevant constituent wavelength; and an impedance sensor integrated into the band and configured to be positioned against a same side of the body part as the miniaturized spectrometer.

Methods and devices for aligning miniaturized spectrometers and impedance sensors in wearable devices

A method for forming a microscale device may include growing, by a chemical vapor deposition, a patterned forest of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes, wherein the patterned forest defines a component of the microscale device, and applying a conformal non-metal coating to the vertically aligned carbon nanotubes throughout the patterned forest, wherein the conformal non-metal coating comprises a substantially uniform thickness along a length of the vertically aligned carbon nanotubes. The method may also include connecting adjacent vertically aligned carbon nanotubes together with the conformal non-metal coating without filling interstices between the adjacent vertically aligned carbon nanotubes, wherein the connecting of the vertically aligned carbon nanotubes is configured to increase a strength of the vertically aligned carbon nanotubes of the patterned forest above a threshold level to withstand forces applied during a wet etching process, and infiltrating the interstices between the adjacent vertically aligned carbon nanotubes with a metallic material.

Microscale metallic CNT templated devices and related methods

A method, system, apparatus, and/or device to determine a condition of a user using a wearable device with a miniaturized spectrometer. The method, system, apparatus, and/or device may include: a band configured to extend at least partially around a body part of a user, the body part comprising an internal feature within the body part; a light source embedded in the band, where the light source is configured to emit light into the body part as the user wears the band; a collimator; an optical filter; and an optical sensor, where the collimator, optical sensor, or the optical filter are arranged together to form a stack embedded in the band.

Miniaturized spectrometers for wearable devices

In a general aspect, an apparatus can include a substrate and a post disposed on the substrate. The post can include a plurality of nanotubes and extend substantially vertically from the substrate. The post can have an aspect ratio of a height of the post to a diameter of the post of greater than or equal to 25:1.

Fabrication of high aspect ratio tall free standing posts using carbon-nanotube (CNT) templated microfabrication

A microscale device may include a patterned forest of vertically grown and aligned carbon nanotubes defining a carbon nanotube forest with the nanotubes having a height defining a thickness of the forest. The patterned forest may define a patterned frame that defines one or more components of the microscale device. The microscale device may also include a conformal coating of substantially uniform thickness extending throughout the carbon nanotube forest. The carbon nanotube forest may have a thickness of at least three microns. The conformal coating may substantially coat the nanotubes, define coated nanotubes and connect adjacent nanotubes together such that the carbon nanotube forest is sufficiently robust for liquid processing, without substantially filling interstices between individual coated nanotubes. The microscale device may also include a metallic interstitial material infiltrating the carbon nanotube forest and at least partially filling interstices between individual coated nanotubes.

The present approach relates to the fabrication and use of a probe array having multiple individual probes. In one embodiment, the probes of the probe array may be functionalized such that certain of the probes are suitable for electrical sensing (e.g., recording) or stimulation, non-electrical sensing or stimulation (e.g., chemical sensing and/or release of biomolecules when activated), or a combination of electrical and non-electrical sensing or stimulation.

Multimodal probe array

In a general aspect, an apparatus can include a porous, monolithic resonator having nanoscale pores defined therein. The apparatus can also include an adsorbent selective to a given analyte disposed on an exterior of the porous, monolithic resonator, the exterior of the porous, monolithic resonator including surfaces defining the nanoscale pores.

Porous resonant sensors

A microscale device comprises a patterned forest of vertically grown and aligned carbon nanotubes defining a carbon nanotube forest with the nanotubes having a height defining a thickness of the forest, the patterned forest defining a patterned frame that defines one or more components of a microscale device. A conformal coating of substantially uniform thickness at least partially coats the nanotubes, defining coated nanotubes and connecting adjacent nanotubes together, without substantially filling interstices between individual coated nanotubes. A metallic interstitial material infiltrates the carbon nanotube forest and at least partially fills interstices between individual coated nanotubes.

The invention is an x-ray window with a stack of thin film layers including aluminum layer(s), corrosion-barrier layer(s), and/or polymer layer(s). Aluminum layer(s) can provide improved gas impermeability. Polymer layer(s) can increase structural strength. The x-ray window can be substantially transmissive to x-rays but also substantially block visible light and infrared light. The x-ray window can have minimal deflection.
