The invention provides a miniature robust fiber optic pressure sensor. The miniature fiber optic sensor comprises a Fabry-Perot chip bonded to an optical fiber. The invention provides a new sensor design that reduces the amount of adhesive required to bond the optical fiber to the Fabry-Perot sensor such that the sensor is less sensitive to moisture. The invention also provides manufacturing methods of the sensor comprising a method based on etching and a method based on using an excimer laser. The invention also provides a chip design that renders the chip less sensitive to thermal changes. The invention also provides a chip design in which a sensor diaphragm has a well-defined thickness. The invention also provides a chip design that protects the chip from etching.

Fiber optic pressure sensor for catheter use

The invention concerns a tandem interferometer for temperature sensing. The low coherence interferometry (LCI) system comprises a polarization-based sensing interferometer comprising a birefringent crystal having a sensor temperature sensitivity and a birefringence dispersion, and a readout interferometer being either a Fizeau interferometer using an optical wedge or a polarization interferometer using a birefringent wedge. In one embodiment of the invention, the birefringent crystal has dispersion properties similar to that of the birefringent wedge or that of the optical wedge of the readout interferometer. The present invention also provides a signal processing method for correcting the dispersion effect and for noise filtering in LCI-based optical sensors of the tandem interferometer arrangement.

Birefringent optical temperature sensor and method

An apparatus and a method of measuring an optical path difference in a sensing interferometer. Light from a source is directed in the sensing interferometer. The light reflected from the sensing interferometer is splitted into first and second beams respectively directed into two reference interferometers having optical path differences greater than the coherence length of the source and such that the optical signals are in quadrature. The intensities of the light transmitted by the reference interferometers and recombined light reflected from the reference interferometers are detected for measuring the optical path difference in the sensing interferometer. Additional light sources allow for correction of internal perturbations and absolute measurement of the optical path difference in the sensing interferometer.

System and method for measuring an optical path difference in a sensing interferometer

The interferometric current sensor is for measuring an electrical current. It comprises a light source for generating a light beam; a single mode birefringent waveguide having a linear birefringence and a circular birefringence, the circular and linear birefringences having respectively given orders of magnitude, the order of magnitude of the circular birefringence being equal or higher than the order of magnitude of the linear birefringence, the waveguide having a first loop portion for encircling the electrical current; a beamsplitter having a first input port optically coupled to the light source, and second and third input/output ports optically coupled to ends of the waveguide for launching counter-propagating light beams into the respective ends of the waveguide and for receiving the counter-propagating light beams therefrom; and a pseudo-depolarizer optically coupled in series with the waveguide for converting each of the counter-propagating light beams into a predetermined ratio of useful counter-propagating light signals and useless counter-propagating light signals. It also comprises an optical detector optically coupled to the ends of the waveguide via the beamsplitter for detecting a light intensity, the light intensity is representative of the current.

Optical interferometric current sensor and method using a single mode

A process for making a custom phase-conjugated circular mirror to be used in a laser resonator that will suit specifications of a user is provided. The mirror reverses wavefront of one particular input beam .PSI..sub.o (x) determined by the user, the input beam .PSI..sub.o (x) having a given wavelength, the laser resonator including the mirror and an output coupler cooperating with the mirror and separated therefrom by a laser gain medium, the mirror being at a distance L from the output coupler. The process comprises steps of (a) determining the input beam .PSI..sub.o (x) that will suit need of the user; (b) calculating equation of .PSI..sub.L (x) which is a value of the input beam .PSI..sub.o (x) that is propagated through said laser gain medium at distance L; (c) calculating phase .PHI..sub.o (x) of the input beam, which is a phase of the input beam .PSI..sub.o (x) at distance L, the phase .PHI..sub.o (x) determining profile of the custom phase-conjugated mirror; and (d) fabricating the custom phase-conjugated mirror according to the profile determined in step (c), whereby a custom phase-conjugated mirror can be provided to suit the specifications of the user. There is also provided a mirror made according to the above-mentioned method.
