In an externally ignited internal combustion engine with a knocking sensor which comprises a membrane to absorb the vibrations of the engine housing during knocking of the internal combustion engine, cooperating with a vibration absorber, whereby the membrane is formed by a thin walled location of the engine housing or by an opening in the wall of the engine housing which is closed by a membrane plate. The knocking sensor can be mounted at an easily accessible location and it is also assured that the resonance characteristic of all internal combustion engines of a series are the same at the location scanned by the knocking sensor.

A motor vehicle provided with a combustion engine, an alternator, a battery and a heating installation for the passenger cabin has a heating unit which comprises a heating circuit and a heating exchanger fed by the heating liquid for the heating of air. The alternator is liquid cooled and has a rotor and chambers adapted to receive cooling liquid and is switchable into the heating circuit; and the alternator has filed coils adapted to be short circuited. In this fashion the alternator is switchable as an eddy current brake. Furthermore, the alternator may be a liquid cooled alternator asynchronous generator, whereby its chambers which are cooled by the cooling liquid are switched to the heating circuit.

The improved ignition means for a rotary combustion engine of the type, having a rotor which planetates within a multi-lobed housing cavity which is partly defined by an inner peripheral wall surface, comprises a spark plug having an axis which extends substantially normal to the peripheral wall surface and has means forming a spark-gap disposed in an ante-chamber adjacent the inner peripheral wall surface. An ignition channel of small size in relation to the size of the ante-chamber extends from the ante-chamber through the peripheral wall surface and is disposed in offset substantially parallel relationship with the longitudinal axis of the spark plug.

Rotary combustion engine having improved ignition means

An exhaust gas detoxication system for a motor vehicle combustion engine with external ignition includes an air pump driven by the engine to deliver secondary air into the exhaust system. The exhaust system contains a thermal reactor wherein final combustion of as yet unburned constituents of the exhaust gas takes place. Since as the speed of the engine increases, more air is delivered than required for final combustion, a blow-off valve is arranged in the delivery line of the air pump, limiting the flow of air supplied to the exhaust system and in general shutting it off completely at a certain engine speed. Exhaust gas detoxication systems to which the invention relates are provided with a means for shifting to retarded ignition during the warm-up phase of the reactor, whereby elevated temperatures of the exhaust gases and hence a faster response of the reactor are obtained. This retardation of the ignition, however, is injurious at high rotational speeds; and therefore, a speed controlled device overriding this shifting means is provided. This device, at an engine speed above a certain value, actuates a switch that shifts the ignition time to advanced ignition.
