A breath simulator for supplying a breath test analyzer with a sample effluent of ethyl alcohol that controls headspace and adjacent effluent passageway temperature.

Breath test simulator

A portable breath test simulator including a case having a jar support arm extending to one side of the top of the case. A jar containing a known water-alcohol solution is mounted on the bottom of the arm. The case and jar support the simulator. A magnetic power drive located in the case to one side of the jar rotates a magnetic stirrer in the jar. Breath blown into the jar forms an effluent having a known concentration of alcohol and is flowed to a breath test analyzer to be tested.

A breath test simulator and method for accurately calibrating breath test instruments used to determine the concentration of ethyl alcohol in breath. The simulator includes concentric chambers filled with a known concentration of ethyl alcohol-water solution. Air flowed into the first chamber is bubbled up through the solution in that chamber, sputtered through openings formed in the wall separating the chambers, bubbled up through the solution of the second chamber and is flowed thence to the breath test instrument. The air pressure and temperature of the solutions are accurately controlled to assure the effluent precisely simulates human breath leaving a precisely known alcohol vapor concentration.

An ampoule holder receives a glass ampoule with a collar surrounding the ampoule neck to permit smooth breaking away of the ampoule tip at the collar. A stopper is inserted into the ampoule mouth and a bubbler tube is then inserted through the stopper and mouth into the interior of the ampoule to form a tight seal between the stopper and ampoule. A slit extending through the insertion portion of the stopper forms a vent passage for air flowed into the ampoule through the tube. The connection between the stopper and ampoule forms an integral ampoule assembly with the collar confined between the stopper and ampoule. The assembly may be placed in apparatus for conducting an optical analysis of liquid in the ampoule.

A breath-test mouthpiece of the type used to remove solids, saliva and water vapor from the breath of a subject being tested to determine a breath constituent, typically breath alcohol, including axially-aligned mouth and tube pipes with a hollow central collector having a lip-engaging edge to either side of the mouth pipe and an enlarged cross section multi-path interior baffle forcing the breath to flow along a serpentine-shaped path as it moves from the mouth pipe to the tube pipe.
