A connector assembly includes a first and a second releasable and mateable connector. Each connector includes a front assembly composed of a manifold and a plurality of optical stems. Each manifold includes a plurality of inserts and a plurality of spherical seal assemblies. Each seal assembly is composed of a spherical ball, a ball dowel pin, and a ball actuator pin having a cam. Each spherical ball is configured to rotate about an axis defined by the two pins when the actuator pin cam traverses a groove fabricated in one of a plurality of guide rails disposed in the first connector. When the plurality of seal assemblies are in an open configuration, the optical stems of the first connector may slide through the inserts of the first connector, through the seals, and mate with the optical stems of the second connector within the inserts of the second connector.

The present invention relates to a robotically manipulatable wet-mateable subsea connection system suitable for use in harsh subsea environments. The robotically manipulatable wet-mateable subsea connection system of the present invention comprises a bulkhead receptacle unit, a flying lead plug unit, and a removable, reusable, robotically manipulatable connection tool.

An underwater rolling seal connector assembly has releasably mateable plug and receptacle units with one or more rolling seals mounted in front faces of receptacle and plug units. The rolling seals are rotatable back and forth between a closed position sealing one or more chambers within the respective units which contain one or more contacts and an open position in which bores through the seals are open to allow contacts in one unit to pass through the seal openings and engage contact in the other unit. Actuators automatically rotate the rolling seals into the open position during mating and back into the closed position on de-mating. At least one actuator assisting device is located in at least one of the units and associated with the rolling seal in that unit to bias the seal back to the closed position during de-mating.

Methods and apparatus enable monitoring conditions in a well-bore using multiple cane-based sensors. The apparatus includes an array of cane-based Bragg grating sensors located in a single conduit for use in the well-bore. For some embodiments, each sensor is located at a different linear location along the conduit allowing for increased monitoring locations along the conduit.

Array temperature sensing method and system

A method and apparatus for measuring the flow rate of a fluid within tubing disposed within a downhole wellbore. The present invention provides an inverse Venturi meter inserted within tubing with an enlarged inner diameter portion. Pressure differential is measured between the enlarged inner diameter portion and another portion of the inverse Venturi meter. Flow rate is determined from the pressure differential and the density of the fluid.

A mount assembly for mounting a two-way radio antenna to a curved section of a vehicle has top and bottom collars shaped to match the contour of the vehicle curved section. During installation of the mount assembly, the top and bottom collars are positioned on opposite sides of the vehicle curved section, and an externally-threaded tubular connector is inserted through through-holes in the top and bottom collars and through an opening formed in the curved section of the vehicle. A mounting ring threads onto the upper end of the tubular connector that projects beyond the top collar and is threaded into engagement with the upper surface of the top collar. A fastening nut threads onto the lower end of the tubular connector that projects beyond the lower surface of the bottom collar. As the fastening nut is tightened, the top and bottom collars are drawn together to firmly secure the mount assembly to the vehicle surface. A two-way radio antenna is threaded onto external threads provided on the mounting ring, thereby attaching the antenna in a vertical orientation to the vehicle through the mount assembly.

Methods and apparatuses that sense physical parameters, such as pressure and strain, using optical waveguide sensors are described. A light source emits light at a predetermined wavelength along an optical waveguide having a fiber Bragg grating optical sensing element. That sensing element reflects light in accord with a sloped shape function of reflected light amplitude verses wavelength. A receiver converts the reflected light into electrical signals and an analyzer then determines a physical parameter based on changes of amplitude of the reflected light. The analyzer also maintains the wavelength of the light such that the wavelength corresponds to a slope wavelength of the shape function.

A tunable optical filter has a large diameter cane waveguide with 'side-holes' in the cane cross-section that reduce the force required to compress the large diameter optical waveguide without overly compromising the buckling strength thereof. The large diameter optical waveguide has a cross-section of at least about 0.3 millimeters, including at least one inner core, a Bragg grating arranged therein, a cladding surrounding the inner core, and a structural configuration for providing a reduced bulk modulus of compressibility and maintaining the anti-buckling strength of the large diameter optical waveguide. The structural configuration reduces the cross-sectional area of the large diameter optical waveguide. These side holes reduce the amount of glass that needs to be compressed, but retains the large diameter.

A pressure transducer that uses a rhomboidal flexure to provide displacement amplification to an optical sensing element is disclosed. The transducer includes an optical sensor disposed between sides of the flexure. The top portion of the flexure connects to a displacement device, such as a bellows. A first pressure port provides a first pressure to the bellows. A second pressure, preferably greater than the first pressure, is ported into a housing containing the flexure, which tends to compress the bellows and pull apart or expand the flexure. Such expansion pinches or compresses the optical sensing element between the sides of the flexure, and in particular stresses an optical sensing element containing a fiber Bragg grating. Assessing the Bragg reflection wavelength of the grating allows the differential pressure to be determined, although the transducer can also be used to sense an absolute pressure. A temperature compensation scheme, including the use of additional fiber Bragg gratings and thermal compensators axially positioned to counteract thermal effects of the optical sensing element, is also disclosed.

Disclosed herein is an accelerometer and/or displacement device that uses a mass coupled to a rhomboidal flexure to provide compression to an optical sensing element preferably having a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The transducer includes a precompressed optical sensor disposed along a first axis between sides of the flexure. The top portion of the flexure connects to the mass which intersects the flexure along a second axis perpendicular to the first axis. When the mass experiences a force due to acceleration or displacement, the flexure will expand or contract along the second axis, which respectively compresses or relieves the compression of the FBG in the optical sensing element along the first axis. Perturbing the force presented to the FBG changes its Bragg reflection wavelength, which is interrogated to quantify the dynamic or constant force. A temperature compensation scheme, including the use of additional fiber Bragg gratings and thermal compensators axially positioned to counteract thermal effects of the optical sensing element, is also disclosed.
