A control system for a vehicle having a first wheel arranged to be driven by a first electric motor and a second wheel arranged to be driven by a second electric motor, wherein the first wheel and the second wheel are transversely located on the vehicle relative to each other, the control system comprising a first controller associated with the first electric motor and a second controller associated with the second electric motor, wherein the first controller includes means for estimating a first power value for the power applied to the second wheel by the second electric motor when the second electric motor is placed in a first motor configuration and means for estimating a second power value for the power applied to the second wheel by the second electric motor when the second electric motor is placed in a second motor configuration, wherein upon the occurrence of a predetermined condition the first controller is arranged to determine a first power differential between the power being applied to the first wheel by the first electric motor and the first power value and a second power differential between the power being applied to the first wheel by the first electric motor and the second power value, wherein if the first controller determines that if either the first power differential or the second power differential is greater than a predetermined value the first controller is arranged to adjust the torque generated by the first electric motor or if both the first power differential and the second power differential are less than a predetermined value the first controller is arranged to maintain the torque generated by the first electric motor.

A controller for an electric motor system including a three phase bridge inverter having a plurality of high side switches and a plurality of low side switches, the controller comprising means arranged upon detection of a fault in one of the high side switches to place the remaining high side switches in a closed circuit configuration and the plurality of low side switches in an open circuit configuration and upon detection of a fault in one of the low side switches to place the remaining low side switches in a closed circuit configuration and the plurality of high side switches in an open circuit configuration to allow coil windings of an electric motor to be placed in a short circuit configuration.

A control device for an electric motor having a first set of coil windings arranged to form a first sub motor and a second set of coil windings arranged to form a second sub motor, wherein current flow in the first set of coil windings is controlled using a first pulse width modulation, PWM, having a first switching sequence and current flow in the second set of coil windings is controlled using a second PWM having a second switching sequence, the control device comprising means arranged to measure the current flow in each of the first set of coil windings, wherein upon determining that the sum of the current flow in the first set of coil windings is substantially non zero, deriving the first PWM values from voltage values used to generate the second PWM.

A control system for a vehicle having a first wheel () arranged to be driven by a first drive source and a second wheel () arranged to be driven by a second drive source, wherein the first wheel and the second wheel are transversely located on the vehicle, the control system comprising a controller () and a monitoring device, wherein the monitoring device is arranged to monitor the power differential between the power being applied to the first wheel by the first drive source and the power being applied to the second wheel by the second drive source, wherein upon a determination that the power differential between the power being applied to the first wheel and the second wheel is greater than a predetermined value, the controller is arranged to reduce the power differential.

A control unit for identifying a fault in an electric motor or generator, the control unit comprising means for measuring a value of a first parameter associated with the operation of the electric motor or generator; means for increasing a counter value if the difference between the measured first parameter value or a value derived from the measured value and a second value is greater than a first predetermined value; means for decreasing the counter value if the difference between the measured first parameter value and the second value is less than the first predetermined value; and means for generating a signal indicative of a fault if the counter value exceeds a second predetermined value.

A control system for an electric motor having a first control device arranged to control current in a first coil set for generating a first torque on a rotor and a second control device arranged to control current in a second coil set for generating a second torque on the rotor, the system comprising a controller arranged to instruct the first control device to control current in the first coil set to generate a torque on the rotor to allow rotation of the rotor; and means for measuring a characteristic associated with the second coil set resulting from the rotation of the rotor from the torque generated by the first coil set while substantially no current is flowing in the coils of the second coil set.
