The present disclosure provides an ice making evaporator that combines the cubic shape of pan and partition evaporators with the central ice making of a pin evaporator to achieve an ice shape that is mostly cubic. Separation of the cooling ability of these two evaporator portions allows cube shaping during ice making cycle based on time, temperature, pressure, or other variables.

There is provided a method that includes (a) controlling a vibrator to produce an acoustic wave in accordance with a signal that includes (i) an on-time during which a packet of pulses is generated, followed by (ii) an off-time during which no pulses are generated, and thus includes (iii) a frequency component, (b) receiving an electrical representation of the acoustic wave that has been detected from a body of water that is being frozen on a structure, (c) extracting, from the electrical representation, (i) the frequency component, and (ii) a magnitude of the frequency component, (d) recognizing that the magnitude of the frequency component exceeds a threshold value, thus yielding a recognition, and (e) issuing a command to remove the body of water from the structure, in response to the recognition. There is also provided a system that employs the method, and a storage device containing instructions for the method.

Ice-making machine that utilizes closed-loop harvest control with vibrational feedback

An ice-making machine having an ice-forming surface upon which ice is formed, a refrigeration system including a microchannel evaporator that cools the ice-forming surface, and a water-supply system. The microchannel evaporator includes a microchannel tube that facilitates a distributed cooling effect in a contact area between the microchannel tube and the ice-forming surface. In some embodiments, the microchannel tube includes a series of recessed portions that define insulated regions and divide the tube into non-insulated regions. The insulated and non-insulated regions can be dimensioned to form individual ice cubes on the ice-forming surface. In other embodiments, spaces between microchannel tubes and/or spaces between the ice-forming surface and microchannel tubes can form insulated regions at least partially defining the size and shape of ice produced by the ice-making machine. The ice-forming surface can be attached to the microchannel tubes by adhesive and/or cohesive bonding material (such as glue, epoxy, or other adhesive).

An ice machine has an ice-making assembly that includes a water distributor in which one or more structural elements form a first chamber. The first chamber is configured to receive an inflow of water, distribute the water laterally, and to controllably release the water. A mating member cooperates with the one or more structural elements to form a second chamber. The second chamber is configured to receive water from the first chamber and to controllably release the water onto a receiving surface. The mating member is configured to be detached from the one or more structural elements in a direction perpendicular to the direction of lateral water distribution.

Ice machine and ice-making assembly including a water distributor

An ice making machine has a mechanical compartment and a water compartment that houses a water system, and a pump assembly. The pump assembly includes a motor and a pump housing connected to the motor. The pump assembly is mounted to a base between the machine compartment and the water compartment so that the pump motor is located in the mechanical compartment, but can still be removed through the water compartment. A mounting flange attached to the pump assembly extends radially beyond the circumference of the pump motor. In one embodiment, a pump opening in the base has a collar integrally formed with the base. The collar includes a sealing section and a latching section. When the pump is inserted through the pump opening, snap latches in the latching section engage the mounting flange to hold the pump in place and the sealing flange seals against an inner surface of the sealing section.

Pump assembly for an ice making machine

An ice machine includes an evaporator with a plurality of individual ice-forming cells. Each ice-forming cell is open at a lower end. A water distributor is coupled to the evaporator and configured to deliver water to the upper end of each ice-forming cell. A refrigeration system in the ice machine is configured to cool each of the plurality of ice-forming cells, such that individual ice cubes are formed in each ice-forming cell. A water recirculation system includes a water collection unit positioned between the evaporator and a water sump. The water collection unit collects water flowing from the ice-forming cells in first and second chambers. A water detection probe is positioned in the second chamber. A harvest cycle is initiated when the water level in the second chamber falls below a specified level. A method of operating the ice machine is also provided.

Low-volume ice making machine

An ice machine includes an evaporator, a condensate collection unit, positioned below the evaporator and configured to collect condensate from a back surface of the evaporator. First and second mounting brackets attached to the first and second sides of the evaporator, respectively, and are attached to first and second side panels positioned within the ice machine. A pump deck resides below the evaporator and has a chambered section, and a sump is positioned within the chambered section. The condensate collection unit is coupled to a water discharge line, such that condensate is removed from the ice machine and does not come into contact with water that is recirculated to the evaporator. The first and second mounting brackets and first and second flanges on the sump permit easy installation and removal of the evaporator and the sump from the ice machine.

An ice-making machine has a substantially vertical ice-forming mold for freezing cubes of ice, a water distributor for distributing water so as to cascade over a front surface of said ice-forming mold and a hinged water curtain with a bottom edge for directing said cascading water into a sump, with the hinge allowing the water curtain to swing out of the way so that ice cubes harvested from the mold may fall past the sump and into an ice collecting bin. The water curtain has an inside surface adjacent to a front surface of the ice-forming mold configured such that as a slab of ice cubes is released from the mold during a harvest cycle, the front of the slab of ice contacts said inside surface and forces the water curtain to open to a point where the bottom of the falling slab of ice cubes will not contact the bottom edge of the water curtain. The water curtain may be further improved by molding one or more downwardly pointing chevrons or other structure on the inside of the water curtain, extending between the ribs so as to tie the ribs together to add rigidity to the water curtain.

An ice making machine has a water system, including a pump, an ice-forming mold and interconnecting lines therefore; a refrigeration system, including a compressor, a condenser, an expansion device, an evaporator in thermal contact with the ice-forming mold, and a receiver. The receiver has an inlet connected to the condenser, a liquid outlet connected to the expansion device and a vapor outlet connected by a valved passageway to the evaporator. In a preferred embodiment, two interconnected receivers are used. A cabinet housing the evaporator is preferably less than 18 inches deep. The pump is preferably mounted so that the pump motor is located outside of the water compartment, but can still be removed from the front of the machine.

A method of making and harvesting ice cubes includes freezing water in an ice-forming mold having a back surface, an open front face and dividers mounted on the back surface forming pockets for the formation of individual ice cubes, the water also forming ice bridges between the ice formed in the pockets, thus forming a slab of ice cubes; heating the ice-forming mold to release the ice cubes from their individual pockets; and using pressurized fluid to push the frozen slab of ice cubes out of the ice-forming mold. An ice making machine for practicing the present invention preferably includes an air compressor to supply compressed air as the pressurized fluid. The compressed air is directed preferably through a plurality of holes in the back of the ice-forming mold. Weep holes in the dividers allow this pressurized air to migrate from these holes to the areas behind each of the pockets in the ice-forming mold, thus applying a uniform pressure over a large surface area to assist the slab of ice in releasing from the ice-forming mold. The assisted harvest greatly increases the energy efficiency of the ice machine.

The present invention uses a single molded piece of plastic as an evaporator frame. A low durometer gasket material is molded in place on the single molded piece of plastic. The gasket aids in sealing the evaporator frame and the evaporator pan.
