There is disclosed a new form of zeolite beta which shows substantially greater stability and greater catalyst lifetime when used in the alkylation and transalkylation of aromatic compounds. The new, surface-modified zeolite beta is characterized by having surface aluminum 2p binding energies, as measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, of at least 74.8 electron volts. This surface-modified zeolite beta is prepared by treating an as synthesized and templated zeolite beta with an acid at a pH between about 0 and about 2 at a temperature up to about 125&deg; C. for a time sufficient to modify the chemical environment of the surface aluminum atom without bringing about dealumination of the zeolite beta, then calcining the acid-treated templated material at 550-700&deg; C. to remove the template.

Zeolite beta and its use in aromatic alkylation

This invention relates to a novel zeolite which has the crystal structure of zeolite beta. The novel zeolite SN-beta has a unique infrared absorbance spectrum, shows enhanced activity for transalkylation of di-isopropyl-benzene and shows less deactivation for cumene synthesis. The zeolite beta is prepared by taking an as-synthesized zeolite beta, steam treating it and then ammonium ion treating it to give a zeolite SN-beta with enhanced catalytic properties.

The process involves the growth of a crystalline structure constituting such a phase in the presence of crystals of another of such a phase. Preferably, the process involves a hydrothermal crystallization treatment of the precursors to such phase.

A novel class of crystalline microporous silicoaluminophosphates is synthesized by hydrothermal crystallization of silicoaluminophosphate gels containing a molecular structure-forming templating agent. The class comprises a number of distinct species, each with a unique crystal structure. The compositions exhibit properties somewhat analogous to zeolitic molecular sieves which render them useful as adsorbent or catalysts in chemical reactions such as hydrocarbon conversions.
