The present invention is directed to a method of forming plurality of golf balls comprising steps of: providing plurality of inner cores; forming sheet of uncured rubber; forming plurality of preps in the sheet of uncured rubber such that each prep contains a concave top surface and is detachably connected to coupling material; loading the preps and coupling material into a core mold; loading plurality of inner cores into mold such that the inner cores are aligned with the concave surface of each prep; molding the preps about the inner cores to form outer core layers; and forming covers about outer core layers.

Method of forming a plurality of golf balls

Method of making an inventive golf ball incorporating a novel compression molded outer layer comprised of inventive first and second half-shells that are molded from preforms of extrudate, each preform created using a novel flying knife such that a cross-sectioned face of the preform has a curved depth which may be up to 20% greater than the depth of a preform created using a conventional straight edge and/or straight-faced flying knife. In one embodiment, the subassembly of the golf ball is a rubber spherical inner core, and the inventive compression molded outer layer is a rubber outer core layer. In a specific such embodiment, the rubber of the inner core and the rubber of the outer core layer differ.

Golf ball incorporating compression molded layer and methods and tooling for making

The present invention is directed to a method for forming golf balls, wherein an extruder forms a continuous tubing of cover material and a continuous stream of golf ball cores are fed into the tubing and translated to an encasement station wherein the tubing/cover material is wrapped around each core and the encased core sealed off by a twisting or crimping procedure. The resulting product is placed into a compression mold and a two piece golf ball can be created without the need for the costly process of injection molding.
