A differential mode delay (DMD) measurement system for an optical fiber is provided. The system includes an optical test fiber with a plurality of modes; a single mode light source that provides a continuous light wave signal to a modulator; and a pulse generator that provides an electrical pulse train signal to the modulator and a triggering signal to a receiver. The modulator is configured to generate a modulated optical test signal through the optical fiber based at least in part on the received light wave and pulse train signals, and the receiver is configured to receive the test signal transmitted through the fiber and evaluate the test signal based at least in part on the triggering signal. The system can be employed to create DMD waveform and centroid charts to obtain minEMBc bandwidth information for a fiber within a wavelength range.

Multi-wavelength DMD measurement apparatus and methods

Methods and apparatus for measuring the modal bandwidth of a multimode optical fiber as a function of wavelength are disclosed. The methods include emitting polarized light from a single-mode fiber, frequency-modulating the single-mode polarized light, and then conditioning the frequency-modulated polarized light to excite multiple modes of the multimode optical fiber. The multimode light transmitted by the multimode optical fiber is detected and analyzed by a network analyzer to determine a bandwidth for at least three different wavelengths. A controller performs a fit to the measured bandwidths using a fitting equation to determine the modal bandwidth as a function of wavelength.

Methods and apparatus for measuring multimode optical fiber bandwidth

Multimode optical fiber systems with adjustable chromatic modal dispersion compensation are disclosed, wherein the system includes a VCSEL light source and primary and secondary optically coupled multimode optical fibers. Because the VCSEL light source has a wavelength spectrum that radially varies, its use with the primary multimode optical fiber creates chromatic modal dispersion that reduces bandwidth. The compensating multimode optical fiber is designed to have a difference in alpha parameter relative to the primary multimode optical fiber of &#x2212;0.1&#x2266;&#x394;&#x3b1;&#x2266;&#x2212;0.9. This serves to create a modal delay opposite to the chromatic modal dispersion. The compensation is achieved by using a select length of the compensating multimode optical fiber optically coupled to an output end of the primary multimode optical fiber. The compensating multimode optical fiber can be configured to be bend insensitive.

Multimode optical fiber systems with adjustable chromatic modal dispersion compensation

A radio-over-fiber (RoF) wireless picocellular system adapted to form an array of substantially non-overlapping individual picocells by operating adjacent picocells at different frequencies is operated to form one or more combined picocells. The combined picocells are formed from two or more neighboring picocells by the central head-end station operating neighboring picocells at a common frequency. Communication between the central head-end station and a client device residing within a combined picocell is enhanced by the availability of two or more transponder antenna systems. Thus, enhanced communication techniques such as antenna diversity, phased-array antenna networks and multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) methods can be implemented to provide the system with enhanced performance capability. These techniques are preferably implemented at the central head-end station to avoid having to make substantial changes to the wireless picocellular system infrastructure.

Radio-over-fiber (RoF) wireless picocellular system with combined picocells

The wireless radio-frequency identification (RFID) picocellular system includes a central control station optically coupled to one or more electrical-optical (E-O) access point devices that generate the individual picocells. The central control station includes service units that provide conventional wireless cellular services, and further includes one or more RFID reader units. The E-O access point devices are adapted to receive electromagnetic RFID tag signals from RFID tags within the associated picocell and transmit optical RFID tag signals to the central control station, which converts the optical RFID tag signals to electrical RFID tag signals, which are then received by the one or more RFID reader units. The system allows for large numbers of RFID tags in the picocellular coverage area to be quickly read and the information stored. The relatively small size of picocells allows for high-precision locating and position tracking of items without the need for manually scanning RFID tags with an RFID reader.

Wireless picocellular RFID systems and methods

A system for measuring the state of polarization (SOP) of an optical signal. The system includes a tunable local oscillator providing a local optical signal. A polarization transformer is operatively connected to the local oscillator and transforms the local optical signal to a selected one of a plurality of polarizations. A coupler combines an optical signal from the polarization transformer with an input optical signal from an optical system. A heterodyne detector is operatively connected to the coupler to detect the beat frequency of the signal from the coupler and provide an output signal that can be utilized to determine the state of polarization of an input optical signal.

System and method for measurement of the state of polarization over wavelength

An optical network and an optical amplifier system provide flattened gain, constant per channel output power, and compensation for variable span losses. The optical amplifier system is disposed in a transmission line of the optical network. The optical amplifier includes a first and second stage optical feedback loop amplifiers.
