There is presented a new flame retardant composition comprising a brominated aromatic composition and a butyl substituted phenyl phosphate.

Flame retardants and flame retarded polymers

Flame retardant flexible polyurethane foam compositions, methods of flame retarding flexible polyurethane foam compositions, articles made therefrom and flame retardants that comprise blends of tetrahalophthalate esters and phosphorus-containing flame retardant having at least about 5 wt. % phosphorus additives. The combined weight of the tetrahalophthalate ester and the phosphorus-containing flame retardant comprises about 5 to about 20% by weight of the flexible polyurethane foam compositions or reaction mixtures. The ratio of the tetrahalophthalate ester to the phosphorus-containing flame retardant is from about 80:20 to about 20:80 percent by weight and preferably from about 60:40 to about 40:60 percent by weight.

Blends of tetrahalophthalate esters and phosphorus-containing flame retardants for polyurethane compositions

Flame retardant flexible polyurethane foam compositions, methods of flame retarding flexible polyurethane foam compositions, articles made therefrom and flame retardants that comprise blends of (alkyl substituted) triaryl phosphate ester and phosphorus-containing flame retardant having at least about 5 wt. % phosphorus additives. The combined weight of the (alkyl substituted) triaryl phosphate ester and the phosphorus-containing flame retardant comprises about 5 to about 40% by weight of the flexible polyurethane foam compositions or reaction mixtures. The ratio of the (alkyl substituted) triaryl phosphate ester to the phosphorus-containing flame retardant is from about 95:5 to about 50:50 percent by weight.

Higher alkylated triaryl phosphate ester flame retardants

Increased bulk density of powdered flame retardants, flame retardant synergists and other powdered polymer additives substantially improves the processing, dispersibility, and properties of the processed polymer. Processing improvements include faster processing, more homogeneous additive dispersion throughout the polymer, less swell, and reduction or elimination of drool. Formed parts containing the increased bulk density flame retardant and flame retardant synergists are more consistent with respect to density, wall thickness, and more homogeneous and consistent flame retardancy. Physical properties such as flammability test performance and/or impact strength are also enhanced.

Flame retardant compositions comprising the flame retardants of the present invention and flame retardant aids are also described. Oligomeric flame retardant additive

A method of making flame retarded polyurethanes by including a bromobenzoate compound in the polyurethane mixture. Also disclosed is a method of making flame retarded polyvinyl chlorides, unsaturated polyesters and epoxy resins by incorporating a bromobenzoate compound into the polymer system. Described are processes for preparing brominated diphenylalkane products which are far whiter than prior known brominated diphenylalkane products. The resultant white brominated diphenylalkane products also form a part of the present invention, as do formulations incorporating the white brominated diphenylalkane products, and articles prepared therefrom.

Brominated diphenylalkane products and processes

Improved flame retardant polymer latices are disclosed which comprise copolymers of ring-halogenated aromatic monomer units and alkyl acrylate/methacrylate monomer units, and which may additionally include at least one other monomer. In a first embodiment, the latices include ring-brominated aromatic monomer units and alkyl acrylate and/or alkyl methacrylate monomer units. In a second embodiment, the latices include these first two types of monomer units and further include third monomer units from unsaturated esters of saturated carboxylic acids, halogen-free aromatic monomers or unsaturated carboxylic or dicarboxylic acid monomers. In a third embodiment, the latices include four monomer units, namely ring-brominated aromatic monomer units, alkyl acrylate/methacrylate monomer units, halogen-free aromatic monomer units and unsaturated carboxylic or dicarboxylic acid monomer units. In one aspect, the halogenated aromatic monomers are present in an amount to provide from 7 to 20 weight percent bromine in the final latex composition. In another aspect, the halogenated aromatic monomers include polybrominated monomers, particularly to provide monomers having an average of at least about 1.5 bromines per monomer unit. The latex polymers have glass transition temperature in the -30.degree. to 30.degree. C. range for coating, paint adhesive, sealant and non-woven binder applications.

Flame retardant brominated styrene-based latices

Blowing agents for use in foamable plastics such as polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene and other non-polyisocyanate-based foams, comprising a mixture of 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropane in combination with one or more hydrocarbons or partially halogenated alkanes. In one aspect of the invention the hydrocarbon adjuvant is selected from the group consisting of propane, butane, isobutane, n-pentane, i-pentane, neopentane, n-hexane, 2-methylpentane, 3-methylpentane and 2,2-dimethylbutane. In another aspect of the invention the halogenated alkane is selected from the group consisting of ethyl chloride, 2,2-dichloro-1,1,1-trifluoroethane (HCFC-123), 1,1-dichloro-l-fluoroethane (HCFC-141b), 1-chloro-1,1-difluoroethane (HCFC-142b), 2-chloro-1,1,1,2 -tetrafluoroethane (HCFC-124), 3,3-dichloro-1,1,1,2,2-pentafluoropropane (HCFC-225ca), 1,3-dichloro-1,1,2,2,3-pentafluoropropane (HCFC-225cb), 1,1-difluoroethane (HFC-152a), 1,1,1-trifluoroethane (HFC-143a), 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134a), 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethane (HFC-134), 1,1,2,2,3-pentafluoropropane (HFC-245ca), 1,1,1,2,3,3-hexafluoropropane (HFC-236ea), and 1,2,3,3-pentafluoropropane (HFC-245ea).

Hydrofluorocarbon compositions as blowing agents for cellular plastics

Flame retardant latex coatings are disclosed which include natural or synthetic latex grafted with ring-halogenated, ethylenically unsaturated aromatic monomers. The grafted latex is used alone or in combination with non-grafted natural or synthetic latex. The coatings are useful for a wide variety of applications, including fabric backcoatings, carpetings, paints, adhesives, sealants, caulks, non-woven binders and so on.

Flame retardant brominated styrene graft latex coatings
