A tamper-indicating seal of the type having a bolt retained in a lock body, wherein the lock body is surrounded by a shroud of frangible, brittle material and provided with a grooved outer surface and flanged entrance way for receiving and surrounding the bolt end, whereby the shroud is easily fractured, thus providing visual indication of tampering. Visual detection of tampering may be enhanced by a coating applied to the outer surface of the shroud. A surface feature on the between its point of entry into the lock body and its point of entry into the flange is in interfering relationship with a surface feature within the flange, so that an attempted removal of the lock body from the shroud is indicated by cracking, chipping, or fracturing of the flange or the shroud.

Tamper indicator for a locking seal

A tamper-indicating seal of the type having a bolt retained in a lock body, wherein the lock body is surrounded by a shroud of frangible, brittle material and provided with a grooved outer surface and flanged entrance way for receiving and surrounding the bolt end, whereby the shroud is easily fractured, thus providing visual indication of tampering. Visual detection of tampering may be enhanced by a coating applied to the outer surface of the shroud.

A padlock-type security seal having tamper-indicating means to cause the shackle ends to break through and protrude from the walls of the seal body when serious attempts are made to remove the shackle. The seal includes a pair of slots each having a shoulder for engaging the shackle ends. When serious attempts are made to force the shackle from the seal, a ramp will engage the shackle ends and force them against the seal walls. With sufficient force applied to the shackle, the shackle ends will rupture the seal body.

Padlock-type security seal

A padlock type security seal and method of making same including a U-shaped shackle, a pair of reversely bent end portions, and a body portion having a pair of chambers for receiving the bent end portions. The chambers each have a locking groove therein for receiving the bent end portions. The seal elements are designed from two molded pieces, an insert and a body. The relative dimensions of the chambers, the shackle, and the locking grooves are chosen to prevent picking.

An identification seal for an electricial cable having resilient insulation on the surface thereof, said seal comprising a flat plastic body retaining a wire shackle. The shackle is provided with a pair of legs for engagement in seal body apertures and has a medial portion connecting the legs which comprises a semi-circular loop portion for gripping the cable, the plane of said semicircular portion being perpendicular to the plane of the shackle legs and the plane of a seal face so that when the seal is assembled onto the cable said face of the seal body is readily visible. Numbers or letters identifying the particular cable may be impressed into the surface of the seal face. The components are so dimensioned that when the seal is assembled onto a cable, the cable is gripped firmly by the loop portion of the shackle to prevent longitudinal or rotational movement of the seal on the cable.

Identification seal for electricial cable

A seal of the type utilizing a stranded cable, in which a housing is provided with apertures for receiving the ends of a length of cable so as to form a shackle loop extending from the body. For economy of construction the housing is formed of two superimposed pieces of sheet metal suitably fastened together, said pieces being shaped to provide tapered apertures to receive a locking member and the cable. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the housing sidewalls are tapered inwardly toward the top of the housing, so that the shackle loop extending from the top can be as short as possible, to increase the resistance to tampering.

Security seal for use with stranded cable

A locking cover assembly for the ends of an electric meter retaining ring, to receive a lock bolt from the front side thereof to retain the cover in place and thereby prevent access to the clamping bolt that retains the ring in place. The cover comprises a housing having an internal locking plate apertured to receive the end of a lock bolt in a position such that it extends between the legs of the retaining ring and over the clamping bolt.

Front entry electric meter locking assembly

A seal of the type having a housing with internal resilient fingers for receiving a shouldered stud in locking engagement. The housing is generally cylindrical with a closed end and an open end. In one embodiment of the invention a separate member carrying the resilient fingers is secured into the open end of the housing. In another embodiment of the invention a cylindrical metallic member having an open end and a closed end is retained in the housing behind the member carrying the resilient fingers so that access to the fingers to release the stud cannot be had by cutting off the end of the plastic housing, and the fingers cannot be manipulated by the insertion of a needle or other sharp instrument through the exterior of the housing.

Security seal

A housing for receiving a lock of the so-called 'barrel-lock' type for locking closed the hinged cover of an electric meter box or the like. The housing comprises a support block for attachment to the meter box, and a lock housing hinged to the block. The housing carries a meter box cover retainer which, when the housing is in the closed position and locked by the barrel lock, extends in front of the cover of the meter box and prevents it from being opened. The housing and the support block have openings which are aligned when the housing is in the closed position, to receive the barrel lock. To protect the lock from shear forces which would be applied thereto by an interloper attempting to force the housing open, a shroud is provided in the aligned openings to surround the assembled lock. The shroud, when the housing is closed and locked, extends across the junction of the housing opening and the lock opening, and is retractable when the lock is removed to allow the housing to be swung to the open position.

Lock assembly for enclosure cover

A meter clamping ring for securing an electric meter housing of the type haing a peripheral mounting flange to a meter socket, comprising a clamping ring having ends with portions adapted to overlap to align lock receiving openings. One end is provided with a housing for enclosing the lock. In one embodiment of the invention, the end portions have cooperating means allowing them to be snapped together into the bolt-receiving position to facilitate assembly of the bolt. Resilient means is provided on the inside of the ring which is dimensioned to be flexed against the meter mounting flange when the ring is assembled to prevent any looseness between the ring and the mounting flange resulting from manufacturing tolerances.

Meter clamping ring

A security seal of the type having a housing with an opening to receive a flat strap type of shackle, in which the shackle has an aperture near the end, and said housing has internal means for engaging the shackle to prevent removal after the shackle is properly inserted. The internal means comprises deformable legs which are so deformed by the insertion of the strap end that a free end of one locking leg is caused to move through the aperture of the inserted strap to lock it against removal. In one embodiment of the invention the locking leg has hook means on the free end engaging a stationary portion of the internal structure after it has passed through the strap opening. In another embodiment of the invention two sets of deformable legs are provided so that both ends of a shackle may be engaged in the housing, thereby allowing the user of the seal to provide his own shackles with his own numbering system.

Ball type seal

A seal for a pipe coupling such as is used to connect a gas meter to a gas supply line. The seal is made in two portions, which may be connected by a flexible web, and the portions have integral means for locking together around the nut of a coupling. Each portion has an outer shell with internal protrusions formed on the inner surface thereof. The portions are made of pigmented plastic of a type, such as polypropylene, that forms a white blush on the surface when permanently deformed. Hence when an attempt is made to remove the seal by a wrench or the like, the internal protrusions are forced against the nut, forming white blushes on the outer surface opposite the position of the ribs, giving visual evidence of tampering.

An adaptor for attachment to a plunger lock unlocking tool of a type which grasps the external surface of the unlocking pin of a plunger-type lock and pulls the pin to the unlocking position, said adaptor enabling the tool to be used to unlock a plunger lock of the type in which the unlocking member is a hollow pin which is grasped internally for pulling to the unlocking position.

A seal of the type resembling a padlock which comprises a plastic housing having a pair of apertures in the top surface for receiving the ends of a wire shackle. To provide evidence of tampering, by attempts to work a shackle end out of an aperture with a pair of pliers or the like, upwardly extending protuberance are provided on the upper surface of the body, which are mashed down by the tool being used in an attempt to open the seal, thereby giving evidence of tampering. When certain types of colored plastic are used for the seal body, the deformation of the protuberance causes them to turn white, giving further evidence of tampering.

A seal of the type having a hollow housing with internal resilient fingers for receiving a shouldered stud of a shackle into one end of the housing into locking engagement with the fingers, in which the opposite end is closed by a plug having resilient legs snapped into engagement with an internal recess in said opposite end. In one embodiment of the invention, the seal is formed of a single piece of molded plastic, with the plug being molded alongside the housing and being attached thereto by a flexible hinge or web. In another embodiment of the invention, the end of the shackle beyond the shoulder projects into a cavity between the resilient legs to lock said legs into the internal recess.
