An orifice meter including a carrier, which is movable between two parallel body walls while maintaining sealing engagement therewith. In one position it seals around the pipeline flow passage, and in a second position it seals around an orifice disc service opening in one of the body plates. A small, axially movable valve plug in the body plate adjacent the service opening is operative in one position to equalize the pressure in the space within the carrier seals with the rest of the valve body and in a second position to vent that space to atmosphere. Interengaging means on the valve plug and a rotatable closure for the service opening prevent removal of the closure unless the valve plug is in its venting position. The valve plug has two annular grooves, each carrying an O-ring to seal against inner surfaces of axially aligned inner equalizing passage and outer vent passage. A transfer duct opens from between the two passages to the space within the service opening. Bypass ducts opening from the grooves prevent O-ring dislodgement.

Orifice meter with pressure venting and equalizing safety device

A valve construction wherein a streamlined flow diverter is centered within a cylindrical valve body. A slidable annular seat ring is biased upstream to seal against a seating surface on the inwardly tapered downstream side of the flow diverter and is biased by fluid pressure so that the valve opens when line pressure exceeds the control pressure. The inner contour of the retractable seat ring and the tapered outer contour of the downstream side of the flow diverter are such that the minimum flow area between them occurs a short distance downstream of the seating surface and is thereafter maintained or slightly increased gradually to an abrupt termination of the tapered surface.

Annular piston valve

A pressure intensifying system for low differential service particularly adapted for use in a gas transmission system which is conditioned to operate in response to pressure differentials. For example, where a pilot valve normally delivers a gas at regulated pressure to the jacket of an expansible tube main valve, the gas is here asserted against a diaphragm in the first of two cylinders in tandem. The diaphragm works against a spring to drive a piston in a smaller diameter, hydraulic cylinder, which delivers the liquid at pressures so intensified to the expansible tube valve jacket. When pressures are relatively high, the intensified liquid pressure ensures a seal, even at low differentials. Conversely, at low pressures which cannot overcome the spring, as when the jacket is being dumped, the piston is fully retracted and the hydraulic cylinder is vented to atmosphere. Hence, at low pressures only atmospheric pressure is asserted in the jacket.

Pilot pressure intensifier

A rotary valve comprising a spherical segment supported on arms extending radially from aligned stub shafts. Carried by the arms is a vane which is circular in outline and of maximum thickness along the diameter parallel to the axis of the shaft, tapering to lesser thicknesses in both directions transverse of that diameter. In addition, the vane is tilted about the maximum thickness diameter in the rotary direction opposite to valve opening movement, so that it remains exposed to the flow stream through full movement of the plug. The flow stream acting against the vane biases the plug toward closed position, cancelling the effects of the flow stream acting against the plug itself.

Low torque control valve

A pressure regulator valve including a poppet type valve carried by a plate, which in turn is biased by a diaphragm of considerable area. The diaphragm plate is adjustably spaced closely to the diaphragm chamber cover plate so that movement of the valve sufficient to enable flow, will consume much or all of the clearance, momentarily compressing the gas therein, and dampening valve operation to reduce chatter.

Low pressure pilot valve

A valve wherein an expansible tube is stretched around a hollow core, which has a central barrier between inlet and outlet slots around the core. An annular groove is formed around the outer sealing surface of the barrier and extensions of some of the downstream slots open into the groove to vent the groove and produce a pressure drop across the expansible tube to enhance sealing and to provide an initial flow path when the tube is forced away from the sealing surface.

Expansible tube valves

A pressure surge relief system including a valve which is opened to relieve the pipeline when line pressure overcomes a pilot chamber pressure. A pilot load duct with a variable orifice device therein connects the chamber to the pipeline. In the event of a surge, the orifice retards pressure build-up in the chamber so that it will be overcome by higher pressure in the pipeline. Pressure responsive means makes the orifice device more restrictive as pressure increases to produce a pressure lag at the control chamber even at lower velocities.

Pressure surge relief system

An expansible tube valve having inlet and outlet body and closures with a generally cylindrical body enclosure between them. A flexible tube embraces a slotted core and integral enlarged beads around the ends of the tube are confined in accommodating annular recesses. Being so confined, the beads serve as retainer means for the tube ends and function also as body seals, being under moderate compression between cylindrical surfaces on the end closures and the interior of the body enclosure.
