A portable radar system comprising: a base; a mount connected to the base; a radar antenna pivotally attached to the mount; and a linear actuator pivotally connected between a portion of the base and the radar antenna, the linear actuator comprising a base containing an extendable column, which when deployed is substantially cylindrical, having a corrugated outer wall, and which is configured to raise and lower the radar antenna.

System and method to control movement or orientation of a platform

An actuator device comprises a compact housing including an extendable corrugated column comprising: a horizontal helical band; a vertical sidewall band having a plurality of hinged segments; and a resilient retaining band; wherein the hinged segmented vertical band includes a first group of segments having tabs defined at longitudinal ends of the first group of segments, the tabs configured to overlap and engage an outer edge of the horizontal helical band, and a second set of segments positioned between adjacent tabbed segments of the first group of segments, the second set of segments configured to define corrugations between adjacent tabbed segments in the first group of segments.

Self deploying axial drive actuator

A method of articulating a sensor comprising the steps applying a friction force on a curved surface of a sensor support frame with a friction drive actuator for pivoting the sensor support frame about a pivot point for altering an elevation and azimuth angle of the sensor. The sensor may be maintained at a predetermined elevation angle while the sensor support frame is pivoted about the pivot point with the friction drive actuator for altering an azimuth angle of the sensor.

Pivoting sensor drive system and method

A system comprises a base having a sensor support frame moveably mounted thereto such that the support frame is pivotal about at least two axes with respect to a pivot point. A sensor is coupled to the support frame. At least one actuator is provided for pivoting the support frame about the pivot point.

A method for reducing or eliminating coding artifacts in video pictures processed using intra block prediction methods, for example, according to the H.264 standard. The causes of the coding artifacts are identified to be the intra prediction modes with prediction directions that are not in the direction of the raster scan. Filtering the affected blocks with a simple one-dimensional spatial filter will reduce or even eliminate these coding artifacts.

Optical coupler replication arrangement and process

A method and associated structure for forming a conductive path within a laminate. A conductive element is presses into an opening in the laminate such that portion of at least one end of the conductive element extends beyond a surface of the laminate. A compressive pressure is applied to the portion of the at least one end of the conductive element. The compressive pressure applied to the at least one end of the conductive element forms a contact pad extending beyond the surface of the laminate. The conductive element may include an inner element covered by an outer element.

Method and apparatus to establish circuit layers interconnections

A method and apparatus in a data processing system for processing graphics image. A determination is made as to whether the graphics image has more than two colors. The graphics image is compressed in response to an absence of a determination that the graphics image has more than two colors to form a compressed image. The compressed image is sent to a client.

Method and apparatus for presenting images in a data processing system

A method and apparatus are disclosed for aligning an array of light transmitting elements to an array of photosensitive detectors. The array is adjusted along three axes. Any element (a coupled transmitting and detecting unit of the array) can be selected as the center of rotation. Small angular correction is made about the selected element by differentially moving the array in two axes, using adjustment tools. Alignment is accomplished by performing translational movement in the horizontal X and Y axes until a signal is detected. A rotational correction about the selected element is performed by moving one of a pair of adjustment devices until maximum light intensity is achieved for the end elements. Next, the array is scanned for the weakest performing element in the array. The alignment procedure is repeated until the performance of all of the elements in the array fall within a pre-established specification range.

Fiber optic assembly

Optical packages and a method of fabricating same, wherein an active optical device can be located relative to a substrate and coupler. The structure includes a substrate having electrical contact pads and alignment pads with precision aligned through-holes for at least one optical fiber. The optical fibers are supported by a housing, or coupler, having alignment pins that are precision located relative to the through-holes in the substrate and the optical fiber. A die, or active optical device, with one or more active optical elements on a first die surface and electrical contacts on a second die surface, is aligned with the electrical pads of the substrate and the active optical elements. The method incorporates the steps of grinding alignment pins into metallic pads and grinding optical fibers in one pass and then aligning the active optical device and the optical fibers by using the surface tension of conductive adhesive liquid. The fibers are then bonded.

Optical device with chip level precision alignment

A multi-layer electronic structure includes an increased capacity for the attachment of active or passive devices thereto. This is achieved by creating a three-dimensional grid of connection points to electrically couple active or passive surface mounted devices to edge mounted devices. The grid pattern is useful with any laminate including circuit cards, ceramic modules and flexible circuits. The variety of electrical devices that may be connected to the cross-sectional substrate includes, but is not limited to, chips such as semiconductor chips, diodes, resistors, capacitors and printed wiring boards. The structure can be used to more rapidly pass data, such as optical data that is transmitted from a spectroscope through a VCSEL laser and the electronic structure to a computer for diagnostics and analysis. A stepped arrangement of circuitized laminates is described for this purpose.

Multi-layered high density connections

A package is described that couples a twelve channel wide fiber optic cable to a twelve channel Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) transmitter and a multiple channel Perpendicularly Aligned Integrated Die (PAID) receiver. The package allows for reduction in the height of the assembly package by vertically orienting certain dies parallel to the fiber optic cable and horizontally orienting certain other dies. The assembly allows the vertically oriented optoelectronic dies to be perpendicularly attached to the horizontally oriented laminate via a flexible circuit.
