An electric actuator for a marine steering system comprises a housing and an output shaft reciprocatingly received by the housing. There is a rotor disposed within the housing. The rotor is coupled to the output shaft of the electric actuator. Rotation of the rotor causing the output shaft of the electric actuator to reciprocate relative to the housing. There is a motor disposed within the housing. The motor has an output shaft coupled to the rotor. A longitudinal axis of the output shaft of the motor is parallel with a longitudinal axis of the output shaft of the electric actuator. There is also a drive mechanism disposed within the housing. The drive mechanism couples the output shaft of electric actuator to the rotor. The drive mechanism is on a plane radial to a longitudinal axis of the output shaft of the motor. There is an actuator position sensor disposed on the rotor for sensing a position of the rotor. The actuator position sensor senses an actual steering position based on a position of the rotor. There is a motor position sensor disposed on the output shaft of the motor for sensing a rotating position of the motor. The motor position sensor senses a relative steering position based on a position of the motor.

Electric actuator for a marine steering system, and methods of defining steering boundaries and determining drive mechanism failure thereof

An electric actuator for a marine steering system comprises a housing and an output shaft reciprocatingly received by the housing. There is a rotor disposed within the housing. The rotor is coupled to the output shaft of the electric actuator. Rotation of the rotor causing the output shaft of the electric actuator to reciprocate relative to the housing. There is a motor disposed within the housing. The motor has an output shaft coupled to the rotor. A longitudinal axis of the output shaft of the motor is parallel with a longitudinal axis of the output shaft of the electric actuator. There is also a drive mechanism disposed within the housing. The drive mechanism couples the output shaft of electric actuator to the rotor. The drive mechanism is on a plane radial to a longitudinal axis of the output shaft of the motor.

Electric actuator for a marine steering system

A steering system for a marine vessel comprises a helm, a control head, and a joystick. The helm and control head may respectively provide user inputted steering commands and user inputted shift and throttle commands on a first CAN network. The joystick and the control head may respectively provide user inputted steering commands and user inputted shift and throttle commands on a second CAN network. The helm may provide user inputted steering commands on the first CAN network. The control head may provide user inputted shift and throttle commands on the second CAN network. The joystick may provide user inputted steering commands and user inputted shift and throttle commands on either the first CAN network or the second CAN network.

Steering system for a marine vessel

An outboard motor includes a steering arm that turns around a centerline of a steering shaft together with the steering shaft, a steering actuator including a movable body that moves in a right-left direction, and a motion converter that converts a movement of the movable body in the right-left direction into a turning motion of the steering arm around the centerline of the steering shaft. The motion converter includes a bushing holder into which the steering arm is inserted in a front-rear direction and a bushing interposed between the steering arm and the bushing holder and including an outer surface provided with a pair of first sliding portions each including a convex arc-shaped vertical section that is perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the right-left direction.

Outboard motor

An outboard motor includes a swivel bracket, an outboard motor body, a steering arm, an electric steering actuator, and a harness. The outboard motor body and the steering arm are turnable around a steering shaft supported by the swivel bracket. The electric steering actuator includes a movable body connected to the steering arm and that moves rightwardly and leftwardly. The harness includes a first drawn portion connected to the movable body and extending around and toward the outboard motor body and in a right-left direction that crosses a center of the swivel bracket in the right-left direction at least in a state in which the movable body is in a neutral position in the right-left direction.

A hydraulic steering system comprising a primary propulsion unit having a tiller, an auxiliary propulsion unit having a tiller, and a hydraulic steering actuator operatively coupled to the tiller of the primary propulsion unit. A tie bar couples a tie bar mount of the hydraulic steering actuator to the tiller of the auxiliary propulsion unit. A first connecting member which connects the tie bar to the tie bar mount of the hydraulic steering actuator and a second connecting member which connects the tie bar to the auxiliary propulsion unit are oriented substantially perpendicular to one another.

Steering assembly for a marine vessel with vertically offset propulsion units

An electric actuator for imparting steering movement to a propulsion unit of a marine vessel includes a housing and an output shaft reciprocatingly received by the housing. There is a motor disposed within the housing. The motor has a rotor assembly and a stator. Rotation of the rotor assembly causes the output shaft to translate axially relative to the rotor assembly and causes the output shaft to reciprocate relative to the housing. There is a coupling assembly mounted to the housing. The coupling assembly coupling the electric actuator to the propulsion unit of the marine vessel. There is a steering control unit mounted to the housing. The steering control unit drives the motor to cause the rotor assembly to rotate and the output shaft to reciprocate relative to the housing.

Electric actuator for a marine vessel

A hydraulic hose fitting comprises a hydraulic hose engaging portion and a hydraulic port engaging portion. The hydraulic hose engaging portion includes a body having an axial bore extending therethrough and a stem press-fit into the axial bore. The hydraulic port engaging portion is coupled to the hydraulic hose engaging portion. The hydraulic port engaging portion may be a swivel nut.

Hydraulic fitting for a hydraulic hose

A power assist hydraulic steering system comprises a helm pump hydraulically connected to a first hydraulic actuator. A power assist pump is hydraulically connected to a second hydraulic actuator. The first and second hydraulic actuators are coupled. A flow sensing mechanism is disposed along a hydraulic conduit which hydraulically connects the helm pump to the first hydraulic actuator. The flow sensing mechanism senses when fluid flows from the helm pump to the first hydraulic actuator. A motor actuates the power assist pump when the flow sensing mechanism senses that fluid is flowing from the helm pump to the first hydraulic actuator. In one embodiment the first hydraulic actuator is a servo cylinder and the second hydraulic actuator is a drive cylinder.

Power assist hydraulic steering system with on demand pump

A power assisted hydraulic steering system comprises a helm pump hydraulically connected to a first hydraulic actuator. A power assist pump is hydraulically connected to a second hydraulic actuator. The first and second hydraulic actuators are coupled. A flow sensing mechanism is disposed along a hydraulic conduit which hydraulically connects the helm pump to the first hydraulic actuator. The flow sensing mechanism senses when fluid flows from the helm pump to the first hydraulic actuator. A motor actuates the power assist pump when the flow sensing mechanism senses that fluid is flowing from the helm to the first hydraulic actuator. In one embodiment the first hydraulic actuator is a servo cylinder and the second hydraulic steering actuator is a drive cylinder.

In some embodiments, a hydraulic steering actuator may be provided. The actuator may include: a cylinder and piston rod reciprocatingly mounted within the cylinder and extending through the cylinder for movement along a piston rod axis; a pair of spaced-apart cylinder arms extending radially outward of the cylinder and a pivot plate extending between the cylinder arms; a pair of support arms which are pivotable about a tilt axis and are connected to opposite ends of the piston rod to allow arcuate movement of the piston rod about the tilt axis while maintaining the piston rod axis parallel to the tilt rod axis; and a tie bar mount disposed on the cylinder and having an aperture extending therethrough for the receiving a connecting member which connects a tie bar to the tie bar mount, wherein the aperture extends axially in a direction substantially perpendicular to the piston rod axis.

Steering assembly for a marine vessel with vertically offset propulsion

The present invention relates to a tie bar. The tie bar has a first subassembly and a second subassembly. The first subassembly includes an end portion configured to connect to a propulsion unit, a first tube that extends from the end portion and a threaded member operatively connected to the end portion and disposed within and at least partially extending along the first tube. The second subassembly includes an end portion configured to connect to a further propulsion unit and a second tube that extends from the end portion of the second subassembly. The second subassembly is configured to threadably engage with the threaded member. The distance of separation between the end portions is selectively adjustable thereby.
