A transmission for converting rotary motion to simultaneous reciprocating motion of a tool in two mutually transverse directions. A driver is selectively attached to one end of an input shaft and the opposite end of the input shaft terminates at an eccentric cam. An output shaft extends between a driven end and a working end. The driven end is apertured to rotatably receive the eccentric cam and the output shaft is slidably received in the diametrically extending bore of a spherical bearing member. Upon rotation of the input shaft, the working end of the output shaft is caused to reciprocate toward and away from the input shaft and, simultaneously, laterally relative to a longitudinal axis of the input shaft. The working end of the output shaft may be provided with appropriate cutting teeth to enable its use, for example, as a power broach for the precise removal of bone to enable proper implantation of a prosthetic device. In another embodiment, the working end may be movable in three mutually transverse directions.

Power broach system

A cementless acetabular implant intended for use in instances of a bony defect in the pelvis at the acetabular cavity requiring substantial rebuilding of the acetabulum by use of bone graft material. It includes a substantially rigid metallic hemispherically shaped support cup for contiguous reception with the bone within the acetabular cavity. A flange extends outwardly from a peripheral rim of the support cup for supportive engagement on bone stock located beyond the acetabular cavity. The flange also serves to contain the bone graft material. The outer convex surface of the support cup is porous, as is a medial surface of the flange, to accept bone ingrowth. A bearing insert of low friction material for receiving the ball of a femoral prosthetic component is mounted in contiguous engagement with an inner surface of the support cup. Screws may be used to initially fix the support cup to the bone and a central apical hole provides visual confirmation during implantation that the support cup is completely seated into the acetabulum.

Cementless acetabular implant

A modular intramedullary nail system for the repair of long bone fractures. The system comprises several base nails of different lengths and diameters, each of which may be anatomically curved, and several extension members of different lengths and diameters. By selection of various combinations of base nails and extension members, nails of substantially any length and diameter can be constructed at the time of surgery. Nails for left and right bones are interchangeable. A unique construction enables an extension member to be readily and fixedly joined to the trailing end of a base nail so as to prevent inadvertent separation of the base nail and extension member while maximizing strength of the modular nail. The base nail is preferably tri-flanged, each flange terminating at a sharp point at its distal end. Cross screws may also be employed to prevent relative motion between the bone and the nail and also serve to prevent unlocking of the extension member from the base nail.

Modular intramedullary nail system

A bone vise for holding a bone or bone fragment immobile during surgery to enable a surgeon to perform desired sculpting or other operations thereon. The vise includes a planar base member with an integral threaded post upstanding from its central portion and a platform threadedly received on the post. A plurality of elongated gripper members are pivotally mounted intermediate their ends on the platform about axes which are tangent to a circle whose center lies within a bone receiving and engaging region. Each gripper member has a toothed surface at one end adjacent the bone receiving and engaging region and a cam surface at the opposite end weight biased into engagement with the base member. Rotation of the platform in one direction causes movement thereof away from the base member and enlargement of the bone receiving and holding region for insertion or removal of the bone. Rotation of the platform in the opposite direction causes movement thereof toward the base member and reduction of the bone receiving and holding region for gripping of the bone by the toothed surfaces of the gripping members. The base member may include a bearing surface with a low coefficient of friction for engagement by the cam surfaces. At least one handle member integral with the base member may be provided for lifting the base member and for maintaining the base member in a desired position.

Bone vise

A three-component prosthetic joint comprising a first bone-attachable component having a planar articular surface and a second bone-attachable component having an arcuate articular surface and a substantially congruent bearing component held therebetween, avoids extrusion of the bearing component without reduction in the efficacy of the prosthesis as an implantable joint when the substantially congruent planar articular surfaces of the bearing component and the first component are in free-floating contact and the substantially congruent arcuate articular surfaces of the second component and the bearing component are unicentric and include a system of interlockable flanged grooves which prevent both separation of the arcuate surfaces when interlocked and also medial-lateral movement therebetween.
