This invention relates to a carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex for utilization in bonding carpet piles to carpet backing. By utilizing this improved latex, it is possible to attain improved wet-adhesion, a stronger tuft bind and improved delamination resistance. These improved properties are attained by including a rosin acid soap in the carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex. This invention more specifically discloses a carpet latex compound which is comprised of (a) a carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex, (b) a filler, (c) a thickener and (d) optionally, a curative; wherein said carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex is comprised of (i) water, (ii) a carboxylated styrene-butadiene rubber, (iii) an emulsifier and (iv) a rosin acid soap. The subject invention further discloses a process for manufacturing carpet which comprises the steps of (1) coating one side of a backing with a carpet latex compound to produce a latex-coated backing, wherein the carpet latex compound is comprised of (a) a carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex, (b) a filler, (c) a thickener and (d) optionally, a curative, and wherein said carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex is comprised of (i) water, (ii) a carboxylated styrene-butadiene rubber, (iii) an emulsifier and (iv) a rosin acid soap; (2) bringing a pile into contact with the coated side of the latex-coated backing and (3) allowing the carpet latex compound to dry while keeping the pile in contact with the coated side of the latex-coated backing to produce the carpet.

The present invention relates to a method of terminating a free radical initiated emulsion polymerization by using a shortstopping agent selected from the group consisting of isopropylhydroxylamine and salts thereof. One advantage in using these shortstopping agents is these shortstopping agents do not contribute to the generation of volatile nitrosamines.

Rubber chemicals, such as accelerators, are often sold in rodform binders. In order for such rods of a rubber chemical to maintain their structural integrity a polymeric binder is utilized. An improved binder for chemical agents is disclosed herein. This binder is a blend of a graft copolymer and a random copolymer.

Acrylonitrile is a monomer that is widely used in the production of a vast variety of polymers. Undesirable quantities of residual unpolymerized acrylonitrile are often present in polymers. The residual or free acrylonitrile in polymers can be reacted with certain thiols in order to reduce their content in the polymer. In the reaction between these thiols and acrylonitrile products are formed which exhibit antioxidant ability.

A method of preparing a resin by free radical emulsion polymerizing a monomer mixture comprised of (A) a water soluble bifunctional monomer, (B) a hard segment hydrophobic enhancing monomer, (C) optionally, a soft segment hydrophobic enhancing monomer, and (D) a hydrophilic enhancing organic acid. The particular advantage in the invention is the utilization of the water soluble bifunctional monomer which has the purpose of essentially eliminating the necessity of additional emulsifying agents. The resin prepared thereby is designed to be suitable for a water reducible composition.
