A layered window in thermophotovoltaic (TPV) devices is disclosed herein. The device may include two or more front window layers, including an outer front window layer nearest the light source that is thin and highly doped and a lower doped inner front window layer nearest a TPV absorber layer. In some embodiments, there may be additional front window layers between the outer front window layer and the inner front window layer. In some embodiments, the TPV device also may include a front contact, a back contact, and other components.

A skylight for a building includes a solar panel arranged within the skylight, the solar panel comprising one or more photovoltaic cells to collect direct radiation from rays of sunlight for conversion to electrical power, and an optical element to receive the direct radiation and refract it to the solar panel, and to receive the direct radiation and diffuse radiation scattered from the rays of sunlight and refract the direct radiation and the diffuse radiation through the skylight, bypassing the solar panel, to provide daylighting in the building.

A multi junction solar cell includes one or more upper cells and a thin-film, polycrystalline, low-bandgap bottom cell. A single-junction solar cell includes a polycrystalline semiconductor thin film, wherein a bandgap of the solar cell is greater than 1.2 eV or less than 1.2 eV, and the solar cell is configured to receive light through two surfaces, such that the bottom cell has bifacial operation.
