Described herein are inks and coating compositions comprising semiconductor metal oxides and composites thereof, which are natural environmentally sustainable materials that may be recycled and/or reused indefinitely. Semiconductor metal oxides offer an alternative to relatively more toxic, non-sustainable, photo and heat-degrading, migrating traditional photoinitiator agents used in actinic radiation curable compositions. The semiconductor metal oxides and composites thereof absorb visible or UV-light as photocatalysts and/or semiconductors, or absorb electron beam radiation, forming radicals for radical events as polymerization reactions and color enhancement events.

A method of formulating ink for high-speeding printing includes controlling a surface tension of the ink to equal to or greater than 26 mN/m, equal to or greater than 28 mN/m, or equal to or greater than 30 mN/m. The surface tension is measured when the ratio of the total non-volatiles volume fraction of the ink to the maximum total non-volatiles volume fraction of the ink is a ratio between about 0.40 and about 0.90. An ink for high-speed printing includes one or more resins, one or more colorants, one or more solvents, and one or more additives. The ink can be a flexographic ink, a rotogravure ink, a heatset offset ink, or a publication gravure ink. A print of the ink includes less than 1% of pinholes by area. A method of printing includes preparing an ink and applying the ink to a substrate. The ink has a surface tension of equal to or greater than 26 mN/m, and the substrate moves at a speed of greater than 1200 feet/min.

An ink for high-speed printing is formulated by controlling the phase angle of the ink to less than 60&#xb0; at a frequency of 10 Hz when the ratio of the total non-volatiles volume fraction of the ink to the maximum total non-volatiles volume fraction of the ink is a ratio between about 0.40 to about 0.90. An ink for high-speed printing includes one or more resins, one or more colorants, one or more solvents, and one or more additives. The ink can be a flexographic ink, a rotogravure ink, a heatset offset ink, or a publication gravure ink. A print of the ink includes less than 1% of pinholes by area. The ink is applied to a substrate, which moves at a speed of greater than 1200 feet/min.

An ink or coating composition is rheologically tested at three or more temperatures which substantially cover the anticipated range of printing operation temperatures expected to be encountered during printing to determine the value of the rheological parameters viscous modulus, phase angle and phase-angle slope, and to identify values of these parameters encountered during printing around which the structural behavior of the ink or coating changes. An ink composition that has a phase angle of at least 55&#xb0;, a viscous modulus of at least 150 Pa, and a phase-angle slope of at least &#x2212;0.5&#xb0;/&#xb0; C. exhibits low misting when employed in high speed printing apparatus.

Disclosed is a water washable ink for offset lithographic newspaper printing containing: a modified soybean oil-based resin; a pigment; and an acid neutralization agent, wherein the water washable offset lithographic newspaper printing ink does not contain any of the following: a humectant, a surfactant or a modified linseed oil.

A self-dampening ink composition and methods for lithographic printing using a single fluid lithographic ink are provided in the invention in which the composition comprises glycerol in an amount greater than 0 to about 10 percent by weight, a nonionic surfactant with an HLB value of about 8 to about 20 in an amount from about 0.25 to about 2 percent by weight, and water in an amount of about 20 to about 50 percent by weight.

A printing ink composition having a high degree of rub-off resistance comprising (a) a dispersion of a pigment in a vehicle containing a C.sub.7 -C.sub.40 oil and (b) a polymer latex emulsified in said dispersion. When employed for printing at high speeds, an anti-misting compound such as tridecyl acid phosphate, phosphoric acid, glycerol, or propylene carbonate is preferentially added to the ink composition. Where cost is not of paramount concern, a polytetrafluoroethylene wax is preferentially added to the ink composition.
