Provided is a kaolin having a finer particle size and a narrower particle size distribution, in combination with suitable morphology. Also provided are a method of preparing the kaolin product and methods of use.

Pigment for paper and coatings

A method for preparing an aqueous based coating system, and coating systems made thereby, for coating onto paper and/or paperboard for providing barrier to liquid, moisture vapor, oil and grease including a pigment and a polymer emulsion system or natural based binding system. One alternative of the method includes surface treating a pigment to form a pigment system and mixing a polymer emulsion system or natural based binding system with the pigment system. Another alternative of the method includes mixing a pigment and polymer emulsion system or natural based binding system and hydrophobizing the polymer emulsion system or natural based binding system by adding silanes, siloxanes, siloxane/silicone resin blends, or their carbon based analogs.

Enhanced performance of mineral based aqueous barrier coatings

A heated mixture comprising dehydroxylated kaolin and a high refractive index pigment is disclosed. When the dehydroxylated kaolin is metakaolin, the heated mixture has a GE brightness greater than 86% and a Hunter yellowness index of less than about 11. When the dehydroxylated kaolin is fully calcined kaolin, the heated mixture has a GE brightness greater than 89%. The heated mixture is advantageously used in decorative paper. Also disclosed are methods of using and making the decorative paper, and decorative laminates containing the decorative paper.

Pigment

In a process for preparing a white pigment mixture suitable for coating paper wherein a cationically bulked kaolin clay pigment is dispersed in water in the presence of an anionic dispersant and mixed with a calcium carbonate pigment, the improvement which comprises using an epichlorohydrin amine complex to bulk said kaolin, and employing as the dispersant the combination of at least 0.2% based on the dry weight of said cationically bulked kaolin of a condensed naphthalene sulfonate complex having a molecular weight of 2000 to 10,000 and a sodium polyacrylate salt having a molecular weight of 2000 to 5000, said dispersant being free from lignosulfonate.

Chemically bulked kaolin clay pigment compatible with calcium carbonate and manufacture thereof

Novel nanosized kaolin clay particles are prepared by agitating a fine particle size fraction of kaolin clay in a Netzsch mill until the particle size is reduced, aspect ratio is decreased and surface area is increased. The ultrafine kaolin particles are especially useful as a pigment to provide high surface gloss to ink jet printing papers.

Composite pigments comprising in-situ precipitated metal carbonate crystals

A low-abrasion calcined kaolin opacifying pigment composed of particles in the size range of about 70 to 84% by weight finer than 2 microns and having a color defined by Hunter Trisitimulus values of 'L' within the range of 92 to 94, 'a' within the range of .sup.+ 1.0 to .sup.+ 2.2 and 'b' within the range of .sup.+6.4 to .sup.+ 7.5. The pigment is produced by novel wet processing including high solids degritting of a high iron, high titania content Tertiary kaolin without conventional fractionation, bleaching and dewatering to isolate a fine particle size fraction, followed by spray drying, pulverization, calcination and repulverization.
