A novel class of polymers obtainable by copolymerising a monomer mixture comprising (i) hydrophilic monomer of general formula (I) Y&#x2014;B&#x2014;X; (ii) styrene or a substituted styrene, a monomer or mixture of monomers which when polymerized form a polymer with a Tg lower than the Tg of a homopolymer of monomer (I) and lower than the Tg of a homopolymer of monomer (ii); and a monomer having a crosslinkable group is described. The invention also relates to a method for producing such polymers, implants coated with the polymers and methods for forming the same.

Polymer

A silicon containing adduct having the formula (I) wherein X is an electron withdrawing group selected from the group consisting of carbonyl and sulphone groups, sulphonium and phosphonium salts; R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, linear and branched alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, cycloalkynyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, alkoxyaryl, alkoxyalkyl, oligoalkoxyalkyl, di-alkylaminoalkyl, N-aryl-N-alky-laminoalkyl, hydroxyalkoxy, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkynyloxy, cycloalkoxy, cycloalkenyloxy, cycloalkynyloxy, aralkoxy, alkoxyaryloxy, alkoxyalkoxy, oligoalkoxyalkoxy, di-alkylaminoalkoxy, N-aryl-N-alkylamino-alkoxy, acyloxy, acyloxyalkyl, N-diacyl-iminoalkyl groups, organosilane, organosiloxane, hydroxyaryl, hydroxyalkenyl, hydroxyalkynyl and hydroxy groups and any of the above groups substituted with one or more hydroxyl or xzwitterionic group Z, or R&#x2014;X&#x2014; is a nitrile group; Rand Rare individually selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, linear and branched alkyl, alkenyl, and alkynyl groups, aryl, alkoxycarbonyl, alkylaminocarbonyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, cycloalkynyl, haloaryl, haloalkyl, alkaryl, aralkyl, alkoxyaryl, alkoxyalkyl, oligoalkoxyalkyl, aminoalkyl, mono- and di-alkylaminoalkyl, arylaminoalkyl, N-aryl-N-alkylaminoalkyl and -aminoaryl, acyloxy, acyloxyalkyl, acylaminoalkyl, N-diacyl-iminoalkyl groups, alkylaminocarbonyl, oxacycloalkyl, oxacycloalkenyl, organosilane and organosiloxane groups and any of the above groups substituted with a zwitterionic group Z, a hydroxyl group or an isocyanate group; Rand Rare individually selected from hydrogen and Calkyl groups; and at least one of groups R, R, and Rcontain an organosiloxane group Y and/or an organosilane group U. The invention additionally provides processes for the production of such an adduct, polymers formed therefrom, coating processes and compositions comprising an adduct or polymers produced therefrom 

Silicon containing compounds

A method in which a mould is coated with a reactive polymer, a liquid curable composition is filled into the mould and cured under conditions such that the reactive polymer becomes covalently bonded to the cured bulk mould material at the interface. The reactive polymer has zwitterionic groups to confer improved biocompatibility on the moulded product. The reactive group on the reactive polymer is conveniently an ethylenically unsaturated group. The curable composition is suitably a radical polymerisable ethylenically unsaturated monomer mixture or a platinum-curable liquid silicone composition.

Method for providing coated moulded polymeric articles

Copolymers of zwitterionic monomer, especially 2-methacryloyloxyethyl-2'-trimethylammoniumethyl phosphate inner salt, and hydrophobic comonomer, especially dodecylmethacrylate, are made in a monomer starved polymerization process in which solutions of monomers are fed to the reaction vessel in which initiator is present over an extended period. The copolymers have improved compositional uniformity and provide better coatings on a range of substrates. The novel copolymers can be distinguished from prior art batch type bulk solution polymerization polymers of the same monomer composition by solubility characteristics especially in alcohol/water mixtures. Particularly preferred coating compositions comprise an alcohol:water mixture containing around 20 to 40% by volume alcohol.

Polymer solutions

A zwitterion containing an adduct having the formula (I) wherein Z is a zwitterionic group; X is an electron withdrawing group selected from the group consisting of carbonyl and sulphone groups, sulphonium and phosphonium salts; R is a difunctional organic group; A is O or NR where R is hydrogen or lower alkyl; R and R are independently selected from hydrogen and C -C alkyl groups; and R is hydrogen or an organic group; R is an organic group, preferably an optionally substituted alkyl group, an organopolysiloxane group, an organosilyl group or an oligo alkoxyalkyl group. The invention additionally provides processes for the production of such an adduct, polymers formed therefrom, coating processes and compositions comprising an adduct or polymers produced therefrom.
