A compound is provided according to structure 4, (4) wherein n has a value from 0 to 48 and Z is hydroxyl or a benzene ring bearing substituents R-R, wherein R-Rare each individually selected from the group consisting of H, allyl, alkyl, alkoxy, phenyl, phenoxy, halide, hydroxyl, glycidyl, (meth)acryloyl, 3-(meth)acryloyl-2-hydroxy-1-propoxy, 2,3-epoxypropyl, maleate, and structure (a) wherein at least one of R-R, at least one of R-R, and at least one of R-Ris hydroxyl or an ether or ester derived from it and one of the R-Rgroups is replaced by a direct bond to the CXY group.

The present invention pertains to bio-based block polymers synthesized from functionalized lignin-based molecules (A-monomer) and functionalized fatty acids or fatty alcohols (B-monomer) derived from plant or animal oils, waxes or fats. The block polymers can be synthesized via numerous polymerization techniques, such as reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT). Most importantly, this class of bio-based block polymers shows promise as providing sustainable yet scalable and tunable thermoplastic elastomers and pressure-sensitive adhesives, among other applications.

Bio-based block polymers derived from lignin and fatty acids

The invention relates to foam derived from natural oils, e.g. plant and animal oils. The oils are functionalized to allow for the preparation of foams with desired chemical and physical properties, such as density and robustness. The foam may contain a triglyceride having a first set of functional groups, and a second compound or chain extender (e.g., a second triglyceride, a fatty acid or polyethylene glycol) having a second set of functional groups capable of reacting with the first set of functional groups to form a covalent bond.

A method for improving adhesion between two adjacent layers of a laminate membrane includes annealing the laminate membrane at a temperature between an &#x3b1;-transition temperature and a &#x3b2;-transition temperature of at least one polymeric component of at least one of two adjacent layers for a time sufficient for the at least one polymeric component of at least one of the adjacent layers to partially diffuse into the other adjacent layer. A sealed, inflated bladder of the invention prepared from the laminate membrane can experience high strains without layer separation or peeling of the laminate layers, even at a seam.

Pressure sensitive adhesives from plant oils

The synthesis of liquid molding resins derived from plant oils that are capable of curing to high modulus thermosetting polymers and composites is described in this invention. The resins described resemble the unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy resins presently used as the polymer matrix material in high performance glass, carbon, aramid and natural fiber reinforced composite materials. The resins disclosed herein are suitable for polymer and composite manufacture by Resin Transfer Molding (RTM), Reaction Injection Molding (RIM), Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM), Seeman's Composite Resin Infusion Manufacturing Process (SCRIMP), Atmospheric Pressure Molding (APM), open mold casting, spray-up, Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) Bulk Molding Compound (BMC), filament winding, pultrusion, prepregs, lamination and compression molding. The resins in this invention are synthesized predominantly from plant--in particular, from the abundant and cheap, soybean--triglycerides with suitable comonomers and reactants that functionalize and render the plant triglyceride polymerizable. The polymerization reactions involve free radical initiated addition, condensation or ring opening polymerization. The functionalized triglycerides is used in conjunction with reactive diluents, accelerators, viscosity modifiers, cross-linking, toughening and coupling agents. The liquid resins are then mixed with initiators, catalysts and the reinforcing fibers and chain extended or cross-linked to give the final cured composite.
