A receptacle for splice connections of light waveguides comprises a splicing plate having guide grooves. To hold the waveguides on the splicing plate, adhesive glue is provided preferably in two parallel extending strips on each side of the splicing plate in recesses which are formed therein.

A device for splicing light waveguides, such as optical fibers, having an internal sheath and an outer sheath, characterized by an arrangement for clamping each of the waveguides by engaging their sheaths and lowering the unsheathed end portion into a centering groove where the ends are heated and fused together by an alternating current discharge path. The required convergence and alignment of the light waveguide ends during the welding step are automatically controlled by an advanced arrangement which is sequentially controlled with the welding step. Subsequent to the gearing of the ends, the clamping element releases the waveguides adjacent to the fused joint and are moved by a restoring arrangement to stretch the joint into a straight line position.

Light waveguide welding device

A device for connecting individual light waveguides or conductors together using a splicing element which has a center portion for receiving and guiding the waveguides and end portions for engaging and gripping the sheath of the waveguides characterized by a pair of holders for holding light waveguides extending at an acute angle to a base of a splicing element which is held in a splicing element holder. The splicing element is movable relative to the ends of the fibers so that the ends of the individual light waveguides are moved towards one another in a centering groove of the center portion of the splicing element and are brought into mutual contact. Each of the holding devices for the light waveguides are mounted to move around a pivot, which lies beneath the plane of the waveguides when moved to a horizontal position and that each of the holders has a clamp for the portion of the light waveguide which is free of the sheath and for the sheath of the light waveguide. Preferably, each of the holders is movable so that a breaking device can operate on the waveguide held in the holder to obtain the desired length, and the splicing elements are designed with a second cover member which clampingly engages the waveguides in the centering groove.

Splicing device for light wave guides

A splicing element particularly useful for interconnecting the ends of a pair of light waveguides, such as optical fibers, in light transmitting relationship characterized by a single member, which is either molded or formed from a sheet of material, having a pair of thin wall portions with the inner surfaces inclined to each other at an acute angle to form a centering groove having a V-shape and extending longitudinally in the member for receiving and positioning the ends of the light waveguides. In one embodiment, a base of the centering groove terminates inward from each end of the member which ends have outwardly diverging surfaces to enable engaging a covering or sheathing on the waveguide. The base of the groove may have a constant depth or be concavely-shaped with the lowest point being between the ends of the groove and at the point of contact between the ends of the fibers. In one embodiment, the centering groove terminates in second wall portions which extend parallel to each other and form an aligning groove which second wall portions terminate in diverging outwardly flared third wall portions that form an insertion aid. The fibers can be held in the centering groove either by the use of a cement, by welding or the splicing element may be deformed and crimped to mechanically hold the waveguides in the connecting position.
