Retrieval basket for a surgical device and system and method for manufacturing same

A bipolar endoscopic device is provided having a detachable power cord with a plug capable of forming a sealed connection with the endoscopic device. The plug is connected at a back face of a movable guide member of the endoscopic device and can be oriented in different orientations to accommodate different operators. The detachable plug forms a sealed connection with the endoscopic device so that the electrosurgical connection cannot be short-circuited by the outside environment such as a saline irrigation fluid.

Medical device with improved power plug connection

A sheath assembly for a medical instrument such as an endoscope comprises an outer sheath and inner sheath and novel means for providing out-flow of fluids from a surgical site. The outer sheath is disposed about at least a portion of an inner sheath. The assembly has an outflow aperture disposed in an outer wall at the distal end of the assembly. The outflow aperture is the initiation for an outflow conduit that is generally longitudinally disposed in a distal tip portion of the assembly and communicates fluid to a main outflow channel formed between the outer sheath and inner sheath. In a preferred embodiment, the outflow aperture and conduit are disposed wholly or partially in a dielectric tip element. The novel assembly allows improved outflow by disposing the outflow aperture at a more distal end of the instrument than conventional devices such that the outflow aperture is less prone to blockage by surrounding tissue or debris when used in tight anatomical passages.

Outflow system for an endoscope

A medical instrument comprising a Veress needle, a dilating obturator, and a cannula. The Veress needle has a tubular safety obturator with an opening in its front section at a needle tip of the Veress needle. A guide with a guide slot can be positioned in a patient's vagina against the posterior fornix of the vagina to guide the Veress needle through the vaginal and peritoneal walls. A guide wire may be passed through the Veress needle and through the hole in the peritoneum wall formed by the Veress needle to guide the dilating obturator through the hole.

Medical instrument system for piercing through tissue

A grooved slider forming part of an electrode for use with a resectoscope is shown. The electrode includes an electrode lead member having an elongated conductor member. The elongated conductor member has a first end and a second end with an insulative cover extended therebetween. The first end has a protruding electrode adapted to be electrically connected to an electrosurgical generator and the second end terminates in an active member. An electrode support member is operatively connected to the active member. The electrode support member has an elongated semi-rigid bifurcated arm terminating in a conductive core spaced a predetermined distance from the active member. The bifurcated arm is covered with an insulative material except at the distal end where the grooved slider is located. The electrode support member has a grooved slider having at least one sloping leading edge surface and protrusions forming areas of increased current densities fixedly mounting the grooved slider on an electrode support member. A method for treating and vaporizing tissue, such as prostate tissue, using the grooved slider electrode for a resectoscope is also shown.

Grooved slider electrode for a resectoscope

A shaped conductive core electrode member having an elongated curved sharp leading cutting edge forming part thereof for use with a resectoscope is shown. The electrode includes an electrode lead member having an elongated conductor member having a first end and a second end with an insulative cover extended therebetween. The first end has a protruding electrode adapted to be electrically connected to an electrosurgical generator. The second end terminates in an electrode support member which is operatively connected to or forms an integral part of the shaped electrode as an active member. The electrode support member has an elongated semi-rigid bifurcated arm terminating in a conductive core. The bifurcated arm is covered with an insulative material except at the distal end where the shaped electrode is located. The electrode support member includes the shaped electrode having a sharp leading cutting edge and an opening extending therethrough for rigidly operatively mounting the shaped conductive core electrode member on the conductive core of the support member. The shaped conductive core electrode member may have openings and/or ridges or grooves formed in the side wall portion thereof. A method for incising and vaporizing tissue, such as prostate tissue and bladder tumors, using the shaped electrode for a resectoscope is also shown.

Shaped electrode for a resectoscope

A resectoscope with a working element and an electrode. The working element has a movable actuator assembly with a receiving area for receiving a proximal end of the electrode. The receiving area has an entrance, a plug area, and a curved section between the entrance and the plug area. The electrode has a proximal end with a connection section for connection to an electrical plug connector in the plug area. The proximal end also has a flexible section next to the connection section. The flexible section resiliently deforms along the curved section of the receiving area in the actuator assembly.

An endoscope with a working element and a sheath assembly. The sheath assembly has an outer sheath with an outer tube, and inner sheath with an inner tube and an insulating tip. An inflow channel is formed inside the inner tube. An outflow channel is formed between the inner and outer tubes. The insulating tip is connected to the front of the inner tube and has two holes; one for inflow and one for outflow. The top side of the inner tube has a flat shape to form an enlarged outflow channel area between the flat top side and the outer tube.

Continuous flow endoscope with enlarged outflow channel

A continuous flow cystoscope is shown. The cystoscope includes an outer sheath having an outer surface, a hollowed out central area extending along a central axis which extends therethrough, a proximal section and a distal section. The distal section includes a distal end having a member defining an opening. In the preferred embodiment, the outer sheath opening is formed at an acute angle relative the central axis. The distal section of the outer sheath includes an elongated fenestra extending distally therefrom along a path substantially parallel to and spaced from the central axis. The proximal section of the outer sheath includes an inlet port and an outlet port. An inner member is positioned within the hollowed out central area of the outer sheath and includes an inner member channel having a first passageway which is adapted to receive a telescope and a second passageway which is utilized for passing a working tool, such as a laser fiber. The outer sheath and the inner member are spaced apart to form an outflow fluid passageway therebetween. The inner member includes a distal section which has an irrigation inlet and a distal end. The irrigation inlet and distal end are positioned in the opening of the distal section of the outer sheath. The inner member includes an elongated lip which cooperates with the elongated fenestra of the outer sheath to form a fenestra channel having an irrigation outlet. The fenestra channel communicates with the fluid passageway. The inner member channel communicates with the inlet port for passing fluid therethrough to irrigate an operative site. The fenestra channel passes fluid emanating from the irrigation inlet over a flow path having reduced fluid turbulence to the irrigation outlet, through the fenestra channel, through the fluid passageway and through the outlet port of the outer sheath.

Continuous flow cystoscope

A continuous flow resectoscope having a working element and a sheath assembly removably connected to the working element. The sheath assembly has an outer sheath removably attached to an inner sheath. The improvement comprises a rotatable connection of the inner sheath to the working element, wherein the working element is rotatable relative to both the inner and outer sheaths.

Rotatable endoscope sheath

A continuous flow hysteroscope is shown. The hysteroscope includes an outer sheath having an outer surface, an inner surface and a hollowed-out central area extending along a central axis which extends therethrough. The outer sheath has a proximal section and a distal section. The distal end includes a plurality of openings communicating between the outer surface and inner surface. The openings have a predetermined shape and pass fluid exterior to the distal section therethrough and into the hollowed-out central area. The proximal section of the outer sheath includes an outlet and an inlet. An inner member is positioned within the hollowed-out central area and includes a first channel which is adapted to receive a telescope. A second channel, which is substantially parallel to the first channel is utilized for passing a working tool. The first and second channel are operatively coupled to an inlet for passing fluid therethrough and out of the distal end outer sheath. The fluid passageway cooperates with the plurality of openings to pass fluid through the opening from the outer surfaces to the inner surfaces, through the fluid passageway and through the outlet of the outer sheath. The inner member includes an obturator closure means to isolate inflow and outflow distally, to prevent cross flow and to reduce patient trauma at time of insertion of the hysteroscope.

Continuous flow hysteroscope

An endoscope having an elongated shaft which terminates in a deflectable distal tip is shown. The elongated shaft includes a first elongated sheath tube having a deflectable distal section. The deflectable distal section terminates in a distal tip having a triangular shaped cross-sectional area. The elongated shaft also includes a second semi-rigid elongated tube which is shorter in length than the first elongated sheath tube. The difference in length enables the deflectable distal section to extend beyond the end of the second semi-rigid elongated sheath tube and to be deflectable. The second semi-rigid elongated sheath tube encloses the proximal section of the first elongated sheath tube. The second semi-rigid elongated sheath tube has a generally rounded cross-sectional area which is slightly greater than that of the cross-sectional area of the first elongated sheath tube which enables the distal end of the second semi-rigid elongated sheath tube to enclose and pass therethrough the first elongated sheath tube. A method for performing a procedure in a cavity or passageway is also shown. A method for casting a housing around an endoscope frame is shown. An image means for an instrument having a rod-like image transferring system which is rigidly attached at a selected location is shown.

Endoscope having a deflectable distal section and a semi-rigid proximal

A sheath is provided having a tube and a latch receptacle for removably connecting the sheath with a cooperating working element. The latch receptacle is static and has means for receiving at least a portion of a movable latch of the working element such that the latch receptacle can be disconnected from the working element without touching the sheath. A continuous flow resectoscope sheath assembly may also be provided with both an inlet post and an outlet post on the outer sheath portion.
