A method and apparatus for drilling a horizontal controlled borehole in the earth includes a drill frame, a drill string and a downhole tool. The drill frame includes a wrench attached to the frame for assisting in breaking and forming joints. The downhole tool includes removable blade assemblies having, for example, stepped or spade-like profiles and hard facing at areas of primary contact with the soil. When fluid is added for cooling, lubricating and flushing away cuttings, the downhole tool can include a nozzle parallel to the centerline of the longitudinal axis of the drill string, a check valve means for preventing downhole particles from entering the fluid passageway and/or a transmitter protecting waterproof plug for diverting fluid to a fluid passageway and for allowing an on-board downhole transmitter to be near the drill bit. Also, the blade assembly can be placed so as to divert fluid from the nozzle to an acute angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the drill string. Alternative embodiments also include placing the fluid metering device rearward of the tool body.

Apparatus for drilling a horizontal controlled borehole in the earth

An improved trailer hitch assembly to be attached to a drawbar for towing a trailer, the assembly including an upright elongated hitch post threaded at the lower end by which it is attached to a drawbar, the upper end being of cylindrical external configuration and the post having a central passageway therein communicating with the bottom end, a grease fitting threadably received in an opening in the bottom end communicating with the passageway and the upper end of the passageway communicating with the external cylinder surface, and a ball having an opening therethrough rotatably received on the hitch post and a keeper ring secured to the upper end of the hitch post to retain the ball in position, grease being deposited from the grease fitting through the passageway to lubricate the cylindrical surface between the hitch post and the ball.

A switch for controllng a porch light for providing an emergency signal, the switch being formed of a body of non-conducting material having a flasher and toggle pivotally supported to the switch body, the toggle being positionable in an OFF position whereby no continuity is provided through the switch, in an ON position wherein continuity is provided, and a FLASHER position wherein continuity is provided through the flasher, the switch being connectable in series between a voltage source and a light so that in the first position the light is ON, in the second position the light is OFF and in the third position the light is connected to the voltage source through the flasher.

A method of boring a hole in the earth such as for passing under obstacles, not limited, but including roadways, rivers, dikes, canals or other inexcessible areas where it is impossible to trench a ditch including the steps of advancing a rotating drill string in a direction inclined to the earth's surface to establish a borehole, stopping the rotation and advancement of the drill string, aligning the drill pipe so that the drill bit is inclined at an angle relative to the axis of the drill string towards a new direction desired for the borehole, advancing the drill string and drill bit a short distance without rotation, resuming rotation advancement of the drill string for a short distance, sequentially repeating the steps of advancing the rotationally aligned drill string without rotation to move the drill bit in the newly desired direction, followed by rotation with simultaneous advancement until the new direction of drilling is achieved, after which, until a still different direction is desired, drilling is continued by simultaneously rotating and advancing the drill string.

A petroleum pumping unit which is especially suitable for use in remote oil fields and under unpredictable pumping conditions is disclosed. The petroleum pumping unit of the present invention, which is easily movable between a folded, collapsed position for storage and shipment and an erect position for pumping operations, includes a horizontal support platform on which is pivotally mounted a mast assembly including a pair of masts spaced outwardly from the centrally positioned well polish rod. The polish rod is engaged by a notch in a horizontal, vertically movable bridle and is powered by at least one pair of flexibly mounted hydraulic cylinders and associated piston rods attached to the bridle and positioned between the polish rod and the masts and parallel thereto. Vertical movement of the bridle and, therefore, the stroke of the polish rod is defined by upper and lower limit switches which are actuated by actuating means on the bridle. A counterweight support box which surrounds the masts and is vertically movable thereon is provided to assist the cylinders in powering the polish rod. Tapered weight brackets including diagonal projecting ridges engage notched counterweights which are held in place by gravity and prevented from contacting the mast by weight guards. The counterweight box may be eliminated and a plurality of spaced cylinders employed to power the polish rod.

A plumber's appliance for clearing drains and the like includes an elongate hollow grip member formed with an opening extending from one end to the other and an elongate operating element such as a flexible snake or retriever tool or the like disposed within the opening to be moved therein. The grip member serves to steady the operating element as the operating element is manipulated. Upon removal of the operating element a force cup carried at one end of the grip member serves to form a plunger.
