A smoking article, and a method and apparatus for producing a smoking article, in which a web material containing an adsorbent material such as activated carbon and a stabilized flavorant such as menthol is positioned adjacent an interior surface of a cigarette wrapper to deliver flavor to a smoker with minimal/insignificant migration of flavor to other parts of the smoking article or packaging. The web material may be a section that extends over only a portion of the smoking article to deliver flavor to a smoker at a specific point during smoking and if positioned at the mouth end of a smoking article will be able to deliver a flavor sensation in the final puff(s).

Smoking article and apparatus and process for manufacturing a smoking article

A method of incorporating fibriform smoke-modifying material in smoking material rod, wherein fibriform smoke-modifying material is fed longitudinally thereof to a rod making machine ( ). The longitudinal feed path in the machine is in a travel direction of the smoking material deposition run of the suction band ( ) of the machine. The fibriform material ( ) is either constrained by guide means ( ) in the machine to follow a feed path spaced from the run ( ) of the suction band against the suction force towards the run or the feed path of the fibriform smoke-modifying material is caused to ascend toward the deposition run under the influence of the suction force towards the run, until at a predetermined distance along the deposition run the fibriform material becomes supported and is subsequently maintained at a predetermined distance from the run by particulate smoking material ( ) deposited on the run. Thereafter further smoking material ( &prime;) is deposited on the deposition run.

Incorporation of smoke-modifying agents in smoking material rods

A process for the manufacture of a homogeneous fibriform element comprising a smoke-modifying agent. In the process a mixture comprising a solution of a polysaccharide (an alginate for example) and a smoke-modifying agent (menthol for example) is fed through nozzle means, and a jet of said mixture issuing from the nozzle means is brought into contact with a solution containing multivalent cations (such as calcium ions). Solidification of the mixture is thus effected. In a second aspect of the invention, a fibriform element is manufactured by passing a thread through a mixture comprising a solution of a polysaccharide and a smoke-modifying agent whereby the thread is coated with the mixture. The coated thread is brought into contact with a solution containing multivalent cations thus to effect solidification of the mixture on the thread. A fibriform element as manufactured by the inventive process and a smoking article comprising such a fibriform element are also claimed.

A method of, and apparatus for, incorporating particulate smoke-modifying agent in a smoking material rod, wherein said agent is introduced into a flow of filamentary smoking material to the suction band of a rod making machine, the location of introduction being in the vicinity of the suction band of said machine.
