In one embodiment of a superluminescent diode, a first diode adapted on a semiconductor die is to be forward-biased to output optical energy in response to a bias signal, and a second diode adapted on the semiconductor die is to be reverse-biased, the second diode to receive and absorb back propagating optical energy from the first diode and output a measure of the back propagating optical energy as an absorber feedback current. A comparator may be configured to compare the absorber feedback current to a reference current and output a comparison signal, and a driver control circuit coupled to the comparator may provide the bias signal based at least in part on the comparison signal. Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to multi-wavelength laser generator may produce light with a frequency comb having equally spaced frequency lines. In various embodiments, the laser generator includes first, a semiconductor gain element is used to provide gain to the laser being generated. Second, a ring resonator filter, or ring filter, is used to select the wavelength comb spacing. Third, a narrow-band DBR or narrow-band mirror is used to select the number of wavelengths that lase. Fourth, a wide-band or narrow-band mirror is used to provide optical feedback and to form the optical cavity. Fifth, a phase tuner section is used to align the cavity modes with the ring resonances (i.e. the ring filter modes) in order to reduce or minimize the modal loss. Embodiments of the present disclosure may relate to a digitized grating that may include a first unit cell that has a first period and a first length, where the first period includes a first grating element width and a first space between adjacent grating elements, and where the first length includes a number of first periods. The digitized grating may further include a second unit cell that has a second period and a second length, where the second period is different than the first period and includes a second grating element width and a second space between adjacent grating elements, and where the second length includes a number of second periods.

An aircraft system comprising a deflector assembly including, a base having mounting apertures; an inner ring concentrically positioned within an outer ring, the inner ring and the outer ring have an annulus defined therebetween via a base plate, a plurality of rods attached within the annulus and culminating at an apex creating a conical profile; and a forward-mounted cone-shaped deflecting member. The base plate comprises a through hole allowing airflow through the deflector assembly to supply an airplane engine. The aircraft safety device system further comprises at least one locking latch for removably securing the deflector assembly to a housing of the airplane engine. The aircraft safety device is mountable inside a lip of the housing of the airplane engine. Further, the aircraft safety device provides protection for airplane engines from air born animate and inanimate objects.

A system having an optomechanical gyroscope device. An optomechanical disk acts as an optical ring resonator and a mechanical disk resonator. A drive laser generates an optical drive signal. A drive channel acts as a waveguide for the optical drive signal and includes drive electrodes in a first proximity with respect to the optomechanical disk. The drive electrodes to excite the ring by evanescent coupling. A drive photodetector is configured to receive an output optical signal from the drive channel. A sense laser generates a optical sense signal. A sense channel acts as a waveguide for the optical sense signal and includes sense electrodes in a second proximity with respect to the optomechanical disk. A sense photodetector is configured to receive an output optical signal from the sense channel.

Integrated silicon optomechanical gyroscopes (OMGs)

A semiconductor metallurgy includes a ratio of germanium and palladium that provides low contact resistance to both n-type material and p-type material. The metallurgy allows for a contact that does not include gold and is compatible with mass-production CMOS techniques. The ratio of germanium and palladium can be achieved by stacking layers of the materials and annealing the stack, or simultaneously depositing the germanium and palladium on the material where the contact is to be manufactured.

Described are embodiments of hybrid optical apparatuses including anti-resonant optical waveguides, and methods for making such apparatuses and systems. In one embodiment, a hybrid optical apparatus may include a first semiconductor region including an active region of one or more layers of semiconductor materials and a second semiconductor region coupled with the first semiconductor region. The second semiconductor region may include an optical waveguide configured to transmit light inputted by a light input component. The optical waveguide may be defined by a first trench disposed on a first side of the waveguide, and a second trench disposed on a second side of the waveguide opposite the first side. A width of each trench may vary along a length of the apparatus to control optical power density of the light transmitted along the optical waveguide. Hybrid optical apparatuses including optical waveguides

Embodiments of a method comprising guiding an optical mode with an optical waveguide disposed in silicon, overlapping both the optical waveguide and an active semiconductor material evanescently coupled to the optical waveguide with the optical mode guided through the optical waveguide, electrically pumping the active semiconductor material to inject current directed through the active semiconductor material and through the optical mode, and generating light in the active semiconductor material in response to the injected current. Method for electrically pumped semiconductor evanescent laser

The dominant source of thermal resistance for silicon photonic devices patterned on SOI wafers is the buried oxide layer. To ensure efficient thermally driven silicon devices there is a need for a large thermal resistance. This is in contrast to temperature sensitive components need to have low thermal resistance in order to reduce their temperature to ensure good performance. Embodiments comprise etching the back of an SOI wafer to expose the buried oxide layer and depositing an additional layer of silicon oxide to increase the local thermal resistance. Thus, embodiments provide the ability to tailor the thermal resistance across the wafer or die depending on the device being fabricated.

Described herein is a hybrid III-V Silicon laser comprising a first semiconductor region including layers of semiconductor materials from group III, group IV, or group V semiconductor to form an active region; and a second semiconductor region having a silicon waveguide and bonded to the first semiconductor region via direct bonding at room temperature of a layer of the first semiconductor region to a layer of the second semiconductor region.

A broadband receiving apparatus includes an antenna to receive a radio signal having a plurality of modulation frequencies. An amplifier drives a laser source from the broadband radio signal to produce an optical signal having a plurality of spectral components. A diffraction grating transforms the optical signal into its spectral components. An array of photo-detectors converts the spectral components into electronic signals corresponding to the plurality of modulation frequencies. A transmitting apparatus includes an array of coherent laser emitters driven by electronic signals corresponding to a plurality of modulation frequencies to produce optical signals corresponding to a plurality of spectral components. A diffraction grating inverse transforms the spectral components into a composite optical signal. A photo-detector converts the composite optical signal into a composite electronic signal including the plurality of modulation frequencies. An amplifier amplifies the composite electronic signal for transmission as a broadband radio signal.

Narrow surface corrugated gratings for integrated optical components and their method of manufacture. An embodiment includes a grating having a width narrower than a width of the waveguide on which the grating is formed. In accordance with certain embodiments of the present invention, masked photolithography is employed to form narrowed gratings having a desired grating strength. In an embodiment, an optical cavity of a laser is formed with a reflector grating having a width narrower than a width of the waveguide. In another embodiment an integrated optical communication system includes one or more narrow surface corrugated gratings.

The method may include providing a silicon-on-insulator wafer; patterning waveguides in the silicon-on-insulator wafer; providing a III-V wafer comprising multiple layers; applying quantum well intermixing to obtain a plurality of regions of different bandgaps within the III-V wafer; and bonding the silicon on insulator wafer with the III-V wafer.
