A precise and versatile hybrid sensor system and method of use that senses the location of a movable element traveling along a linear path. The system includes a magnetostrictive sensor along with a tried and proven converting mechanism that converts the linear movement of the movable element to rotational movement and then to a greatly reduced linear movement of a magnet that is directly proportional to the movement of the movable element. The magnetostrictive sensor has a sensor probe having an active length that is in close proximity and parallel to the movement of the magnet such that the magnetostrictive sensor can sense the location of the magnet to determine the location of the movable element. The magnetostrictive sensor is located exterior to the vessel to eliminate wiring within the vessel itself so as to allow the hybrid sensor to be readily used in difficult, high pressure or subsea environments.

Hybrid sensor system and method of use

A linear position sensing system includes a sensor, a conduit and an enclosure. The sensor has a connector and a converting element, where the connector includes a first end attached to the converting element and a second end that passes through the conduit and is configured for attachment to a moveable element of an external device. The enclosure houses the sensor. The conduit includes a first end fitting that is attached to the enclosure and a second end fitting that is affixed at a port or other aperture of the external device. The second end of the connector is configured to be inserted in the port other aperture and attached to the moveable element without disassembly of the external device.

System and method of manufacture for a linear position sensor

A switching mechanism includes a housing, an actuator retained within the housing, and an electrical switching apparatus. The actuator includes an actuation element retained by the housing, where at least a portion of the actuation element is positioned for receiving an actuation load, and a plunger substantially in contact with the actuation element and operable to translate when an actuation load is applied to the actuation element. A sealing element placed around a second cylindrical portion of the plunger contacts inner surfaces of the housing to provide a seal between a first end and second end of the housing. The actuator also includes a spring operable to apply a force to resist translation of the plunger. An electrical switching apparatus is retained by the second end of the housing.

System and method for rapid aiming and firing of defensive countermeasures

A system providing a physical-barrier defense against rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) that is suitable for use on aircraft, ground vehicles and ships. The system includes a propulsion device (for example, a rocket) and a barrier that is attached to the propulsion device by one or more tethers. The barrier includes an inflatable frame. When the propulsion device is launched, an inflator inflates the frame to assume an open state, and the propulsion device pulls the tether and the barrier along a trajectory for intercepting an RPG.

Rocket propelled barrier defense system

A linear position sensor is installed inside the pressure vessel of a hydraulic accumulator to provide positional information for the moveable element inside of the accumulator. The positional information provides accumulator charge condition data for use in hydraulic systems such as vehicular regenerative braking systems and generalized industrial accumulator systems. Charge condition data allows for optimized control and operation of the hydraulic system.

A field-altering device for an inductive sensor has an elongated body with a substantially saw-tooth profile. The body is made of steel or other type ferrous material. With use in a Hall-effect sensor, the body moves relative to the sensor causing the field to vary periodically with time. The sensor generates an electrical signal in dependence on the field variations, the electrical signal having a saw-tooth pattern.

A low-profile robust switch having low pre-travel and high overtravel is provided through the use of telescoping actuator and a housing having holes of different sizes, the larger hole being sized to completely receive a fastener within the housing and the smaller one of the holes being sized to retain a portion of the fastener within the housing while the rest of the fastener extends from the housing.

A low-profile robust switch having low pre-travel and high overtravel is provided through the use of counteracting biasing elements that operate upon the actuating area of the switch in the absence of externally applied forces. These biasing elements set the switch very close to its actuation point. In the disclosed embodiments, these counteracting biasing elements include a lever and at least one spring which are arranged to provide a low-profile switch.

An electrical cordset for connecting a sensor connector used with a piston position sensor located within a high pressure environment and a control system. The cordset has a connector that is comprised of a housing having a cavity formed therein. A high pressure assembly having a plurality of pins is affixed and sealed to an opening in the housing such that inner ends of the pins are located within the cavity and the outer ends of the pins extend outwardly from the housing to be connected to the piston sensor. There is an electrical circuitboard within the cavity and the inner ends of the pins are electrically connected to the circuitboard.

A sensor mountable within a hydraulic cylinder provides a precision signal indicative of the position of the piston. The sensor includes a flexible connector attached between the cylinder piston and a converting element for sensing the piston displacement. The converting element comprises a pick-up spool, under tension, coupled to the other end of the connector and rotatable about an axis. A lead screw engages threads on the spool, and translates linearly when the spool rotates. A non-contacting electromechanical transducer senses the position of the lead screw, and provides an output signal proportional to the motion or position of the movable element. The transducer may be an LVDT or other transducer. A high-pressure seal assembly provides an electrical path between the sensor and an external connector. A piston stop prevents the piston from damaging the sensor. The sensor is held within the cylinder by port inserts threaded into standard cylinder hydraulic fluid ports and advanced inwardly to grip the sensor.

Precision sensor for a hydraulic cylinder

A position sensor includes a stationary frame supporting a rotatable spool onto which a cable is wound in a plurality of individual windings. A distal end of the cable extends through a lead guide for attachment to an object whose position is desired to be sensed. As the object moves, the cable is would or unwound about the spool and the spool rotates in direct correlation to the movement of the object. The spool is retained in the frame through a threaded engagement between a threaded extension extending from the spool and a threaded opening in the frame. Thus, as the spool rotates, the spool travels along a linear path and a sensor determines the location of the threaded extension to determine the location of the object. A recoil spring is used which may be located within the spool itself.

Position sensor

A position sensor and sensor assembly having a spool onto which is wound a plurality of individual windings to make up a cable coil. A free end of the cable extends through a guide for attachment to an object whose position is desired to be sensed. The cable passes through an elongated slot formed the guide and which is preferably formed at a predetermined angle with respect to the central axis of rotation of the spool. By means of the elongated slot, the individual windings can be wound about the spool without successive windings overlapping each other. The elongated slot further has an internal surface that has a minimum radius to prevent the cable from making too small a bend during the winding function.

Lead guide for cable extension type position sensors

An electrical cordset for connecting a sensor connector used with a piston position sensor located within a high pressure environment and a control system. The cordset is an electrical conductor having a standard industry connector to connect to the sensor connector and includes a casing intermediate the ends of the cordset to contain and seal therein signal conditioning circuitry to condition signals passing through the electrical conductor. The signal conditioning circuitry includes a circuitboard and a potting compound fills the casing and seals the signal conditioning circuitry fully within the casing to protect the circuitry from the hostile external environment and affix the electrical conductor to the casing. The affixation of the casing to the electrical conductor is further accomplished by use of grommets that are sealed to the electrical conductor and interfit within openings in the casing.
