An apparatus and system are disclosed for indicating relative positions of elements in a surgical apparatus. The indicating elements can include electrical circuitry that provides means for activating visual, audible or tactile indicators, thereby alerting the user that an event has occured with respect to the instrument.

Surgical apparatus with indicator

Channel-bodied surgical needles and surgical incision members are disclosed having a generally U-shaped cross-sectional body portion and a penetrating tip portion formed on at least one end thereof. Preferably, penetrating tip portions are formed at both ends of the channel-bodied portion. The surgical needle and/or surgical incision member may additionally includes apparatus engagement structure formed adjacent either end of the body portion and engagable with a suitable surgical suturing apparatus. The channel-bodied surgical needle and/or surgical incision member may additionally include securement structure for attachment of a length of suture material thereto. There is also disclosed apparatus for forming a channel-shaped body portion and the suture attachment structure. Additionally, methods for suturing tissue sections, particularly vascular tissue sections, with the channel-bodied surgical needle and the channel-bodied surgical incision members, are disclosed. Also, methods for forming the channel-bodied surgical needle and channel-bodied surgical incision member are disclosed.

Channel-bodied surgical needle and method of manufacture

A self-contained powered surgical apparatus for applying surgical fasteners to body tissue is disclosed which includes a handle assembly, a gear motor assembly disposed within the handle assembly, a power source disposed within the handle assembly for energizing the motor assembly, an elongated body extending distally from the handle assembly, a cartridge assembly detachably connected to a distal end portion of the elongated body, and an elongated drive shaft extending through the elongated body and detachably coupling the motor assembly to the cartridge assembly.

Self-contained powered surgical apparatus for applying surgical fasteners

The invention contemplates a surgical apparatus for manipulating a surgical incision member and an associated loading mechanism for replacing the surgical incision member. The surgical apparatus comprises an elongated body portion, first and second jaw elements extending from the body portion, securing member for securing the surgical incision member, releasing member cooperating with the securing member for releasing the surgical incision member and locking member cooperating with the securing member for preventing at least one of the jaw elements from moving.

Surgical suturing apparatus with loading mechanism

The invention contemplates a surgical apparatus for manipulating a surgical incision member and an associated loading mechanism for replacing the surgical incision member. The surgical apparatus comprises an elongated body portion, first and second jaw elements extending from the body portion, securing a needle for securing the surgical incision member, releasing jaw cooperating with the securing a needle for releasing the surgical incision member and locking jaw cooperating with the securing a needle for preventing at least one of the jaw elements from moving.

A surgical incision member is provided including a body portion defining first and second longitudinal ends, tissue penetrating portion adjacent each longitudinal end of the body portion, suture attachment structure intermediate the tissue penetrating portions, and a suture attached to the suture attachment structure. A method is also provided wherein the suture is attached to the surgical incision member by adhesives or by crimping.

Surgical incision members for endoscopic suturing apparatus

A detachable tissue measuring cartridge is disclosed for use with a surgical actuating apparatus such as, for example a surgical stapling apparatus. In one embodiment of the tissue measuring cartridge a longitudinally movable actuating structure is utilized to drive a tissue measuring block, located in a housing of the cartridge, upwardly towards an opposing anvil member associated with the surgical apparatus to capture a tissue section therebetween. The thickness of the tissue captured between the anvil member and the tissue measuring block is measured by the amount of rise of the tissue measuring block out of the cartridge housing. Gradation lines may be provided on the sides of the block to give a visual indication of the tissue thickness. In an alternate embodiment, a tissue measuring block is initially disposed upwardly within a cartridge housing. As an anvil member is moved toward the tissue measuring block to capture a tissue section therebetween, the captured tissue forces the block down into the cartridge housing to again generate an indication of the tissue thickness. Various spring members may be provided to bias the tissue measuring blocks either upwardly or downwardly within the various cartridge housings. The embodiments of the tissue measuring cartridge may be provided alone or in combination with a surgical stapling or cutting apparatus in the form of a kit.

Interchangeable tissue measuring device

An improved surgical stapler for applying a suture to a tissue is provided. The surgical stapler includes handles and a stapling assembly for emplacing a suture and staples into tissue as a purse string suture. Retainer structure, for example, a plurality of guides are provided for releasably retaining a portion of the suture substantially adjacent to the handles. The suture may also be releasably retained substantially adjacent to the handles by passing the suture through a tubular member releasably mounted on one of the handles. A clamp may be used to clamp and secure the suture within the tubular member either before or after removal of the tubular member from the handles.

Purse string stapler

A surgical instrument for sizing the lumen of an organ is provided. The lumen sizer comprises a handle member with a projection at either end. Each projection has a substantially cylindrical sizing portion of different diameter, each diameter corresponding to the working range of a surgical instrument to be used on the organ or to the diameter of a prosthetic device to be attached to the organ. Tapered insertion regions having atraumatic tips extend from each of the substantially cylindrical sizing portions. The surgical instrument provides a fast and simple technique for measuring the lumen of an organ.

Lumen sizers

An apparatus and system are disclosed for indicating relative positions of elements in a surgical apparatus. A siliconized surgical needle is provided which requires significantly less force to effect tissue penetration than a standard siliconized needle.

Siliconized surgical needle and method for its manufacture

An apparatus for manufacturing suture-needle assemblies in which the suture thread is connected to the needle shank through the provision of heat shrinkable tubing. The apparatus for securing the heat shrink tubing to the shank of the needle essentially comprises a needle holder, a heat source, a video camera and monitor device and means for insuring heating of the tubing only at the shank. An apparatus is also disclosed for securing the suture thread to the needle shank where the needle shank is already provided with the heat shrink tubing secured thereon. The apparatus for securing the suture thread to the needle shank includes a needle holder, a heat source, a heat cover to create a heating chamber, as well as video camera and monitor means to enlarge the image for an operator, as well as temperature regulating equipment.

Apparatus and method for securing sutures to surgical needles

A combined surgical needle-suture device is provided by attaching the reduced shank of a needle and the tip region of a suture to each other through a heat shrinkable tubing fitted around both, the axial length of the tubing bearing a defined relationship to the effective axial length of the needle shank. In the preferred detachable needle-suture device, a removal interface having a predetermined axial length and/or contact area is defined between a shrinkable tubing having a predetermined axial length and a suture tip region.

Combined surgical needle-suture device

An apparatus for attaching a shrinkable tubing to a surgical needle and a heat labile suture is provided. The apparatus includes a mechanism for desensitizing the tip of the heat labile suture along with a mechanism for situating a shank portion of the needle and the tip of the suture within the heat shrinkable tubing. The apparatus also includes a device for applying energy to the shrinkable tubing to effect attachment of the needle and the suture.
