Disclosed is a hermetic AC electric motor that includes harmonics shunting such that high frequency harmonics are shunted from the AC electric motor without the use of one or more high frequency filters in the associated motor drive. A related method of operating an AC electric motor includes shunting high frequency harmonics to a fluid passing through the AC electric motor. Also disclosed is a simplified variable speed motor drive system which eliminates the need for a filter for removing high frequency harmonics.

Cooling systems and methods for controlling the temperature of motors of gas compression systems of chillers are disclosed. Certain systems utilize a centrifugal, two stage compressor equipped with a motor between the stages. The cooling system provides a low velocity refrigerant spray on at least one or both ends of the motor without requiring additional pumping energy from the motor to deliver the refrigerant spray.

An actuation linkage assembly may include a first lever arm connected to one end of a shaft, a second lever arm connected at one end to another end of the shaft, a transition linkage connected to the other end of the second lever arm, and a bracket connected to the transition linkage. The transition linkage is configured to connect the bracket on a driver ring and to the shaft to transfer rotational motion about the axis of the shaft, from a linear motion received by an actuator, to a linear motion through the bracket causing rotational motion of the driver ring. The actuation linkage assembly is configured with high mechanical advantage. The actuation linkage assembly can be part of a movable inter-stage vane guide assembly in a compressor such as for example a centrifugal compressor, which may be part of a chiller such as in a HVAC system.

A purging device for a system accumulating condensable and non-condensable gases. The purging device comprises: a purge tank; apparatus receiving the condensable and non-condensable gases from the system and directing said gases into the purge tank; apparatus condensing the non-condensable gases into a condensed form; apparatus accumulating the non-condensable gases in a header space; apparatus returning the condensed gases from the purge tank to the system; apparatus controllably removing the accumulated non-condensable gases from the header space; and apparatus generating controlled flow in the condensable and non-condensable gases.

Purge

A centrifugal chiller includes both a unit-mounted full-voltage starter and a unit-mounted reduced-voltage starter. The chiller is rather large with a rated cooling capacity of at least 300 tons and is driven by a motor that is powered by at least 2,000 volts. The chiller includes an evaporator shell and a condenser shell in a staggered arrangement to provide a combined height of between 6 and 12 feet and a combined width of between 5 and 8.5 feet. The staggered arrangement of the shells plus mounting the two starters at opposite sides of the motor provide a chiller whose outer dimensions permit the chiller to be shipped as a single package without exceeding certain shipping limits.
