A multi-dwelling unit (MDU) module is configured for providing telephony communicating services and non-telephony services. The MDU module includes a motherboard and a plurality of service units connected to the motherboard. Each one of said service units and the motherboard are jointly configured for providing non-telephony service and telephony service to a plurality of service subscribers. The motherboard is configured for providing overload power management to limit power consumption associated with said telephony services during an overload condition and for providing lifeline power management to limit power consumption associated with said non-telephony services during a power outage condition. The MDU module optionally includes lightning primary surge protection blocks configured for being connected to the service units. The MDU module includes a passive heat dissipation assembly that is configured for absorbing heat generated by the motherboard and the service units and for passively dissipating the heat.

Various aspects of apparatuses and methods for enabling a subscriber premise network interface device (NID) to facilitate communication services including digitally derived voice services to be facilitated between a central office and a subscriber premise are disclosed herein. In accordance with one embodiment of the disclosures herein, such a method includes facilitating a downstream DSL voice channel transmission process at a subscriber premise Network Interface Device (NID) and facilitating an upstream DSL voice channel transmission process at the subscriber premise NID. The downstream DSL voice channel transmission process facilitates converting a voice component of a downstream DSL data stream to a corresponding downstream analog voice signal. The upstream DSL voice channel transmission process facilitates converting an upstream analog voice signal to an upstream voice component of an upstream DSL data stream.

A method for a system including a plurality of encoders each for receiving a first signal and encoding to generate a respective second signal for sending to a respective subscriber, comprising receiving, in each encoder, the first signal from a first source, while testing a signal path between a second source and the encoders, the first source on a first assembly, the second source on a second assembly, and each encoder on a respective third assembly, while each encoder is receiving the first signal from the first source, receiving, in each encoder, a third signal from the second source, generating, from each encoder, a fourth signal based on the third signal, the fourth signal being a redundancy signal and receiving and examining the fourth signal at the second source and subsequently receiving the first signal from the second source.

The line termination and network termination equipment are interconnected by a bus internal to the shelf for providing subscriber access. The shelf or housing can be used as a hub for connecting to a remote shelf or housing that includes the line termination equipment for connection to subscribers. Although the internal bus of the shelf or housing is shown in a non-redundant embodiment, an increased level of equipment protection can be provided by placing one half of a redundant equipment pair in one shelf or housing and the other half in the other shelf or housing and sharing network termination equipment between such shelves or housings.

In the system and method, redundant signal paths are continuously tested to determine if any faults are present while the operating signal paths are in use. If any faults are present in the redundant signal paths, they can be addressed while the operating circuits are still in use. This minimizes the chance that a switch from an operating signal path to a redundant signal path because of a fault in the operating circuit will result in downtime.

System and method for ensuring operations of redundant signal paths in a communication system

Telecommunications system for providing both narrowband and broadband services to subscribers

The present invention details an apparatus for distribution of video and telephony services on a single twisted wire pair to each of a plurality of subscribers, comprising an optical network unit (ONU) connected by means of an optical fiber to a remote terminal, the ONU for installation in a neighborhood of primary and secondary subscribers. The ONU includes a switch matrix card for installation in the ONU for connection to POTS cards for a first number of primary subscribers over a corresponding first number of single twisted wire pairs and also for switched connection to a second number of switchable video cards, the first number being greater than the second number, the switch matrix card for connecting one or more of the switchable video cards to corresponding POTS cards resulting in an overlay of the video services and the telephony services using a VDSL technique, the overlay for remote selection over the fiber from the remote terminal whereby dispatch of a service person to connect or disconnect video services is avoided.
