A reflective surface for directing wireless communications signals that includes a plurality of independently reconfigurable elements disposed irregularly on the surface is disclosed. A method of controlling a communication channel of a wireless communication system that includes the reflective surface having an irregular element arrangement is also disclosed.

RIS-assisted wireless communications

A method of operating a wireless telecommunications network includes identifying a signal coverage area of a moving base station, that forms part of a first telecommunications network, to which to allocate a first physical network identifier, determining a second physical network identifier for enabling user equipment to access an access point that serves the identified signal coverage area, wherein the access point is stationary relative to the moving base station and forms part of a second wireless telecommunications network, and associating the first physical network identifier with the second physical network identifier. The method further includes allocating the first physical network identifier to the moving base station to allow user equipment within the signal coverage area to access the moving base station via the first physical network identifier when the moving base station is providing a telecommunications signal in the identified signal coverage area.

Telecommunications network

This disclosure provides a method of operating a management node in a cellular telecommunications network, the cellular telecommunications network including a first base station and a User Equipment (UE), the management node storing a first set of tracking area codes, wherein the first base station is configured to transmit a first tracking area code and the UE is configured to send a tracking area update request message to the first base station identifying the first tracking area code, the method including receiving a request message from the first base station, the request including the first tracking area code identified in the tracking area update request message; comparing the received first tracking area code to the first set of tracking area codes; and sending a response message to the first base station, the response message accepting or rejecting the tracking area request based on the comparison.

Cellular telecommunications network

This disclosure provides a method of operating a network node in a wireless telecommunications network, wherein the wireless telecommunications network includes a first access point having a transmitter configured to transmit in a first coverage area, including receiving, from a sensor, data indicating a location of an object within the first coverage area of the first access point's transmitter; determining, from a set of access rights including excluded, differentiated restrictions and no restrictions, that the object has the differentiated restrictions access right; responsive to the determination that the object has the differentiated restrictions access right, classifying, from a set of classes including a first class and a second class, the object in the first class, wherein the first class is associated with a first restriction configuration having a first electro and/or magnetic field exposure threshold and the second class is associated with a second restriction configuration having a second electro and/or magnetic field exposure threshold; responsive to the determination that the object is classified in the first class, determining that the object shall use the first electro and/or magnetic field exposure threshold; determining that a value of electro and/or magnetic field exposure for the object exceeds the first electro and/or magnetic field exposure threshold; and causing an adjustment of the first access point so as to reduce the value of electro and/or magnetic field exposure for the object.

Wireless telecommunications network

This disclosure provides a network node for a wireless telecommunications network, and a method of operating the network node, the wireless telecommunications network including a first access point configured to transmit in a first coverage area, a second access point configured to transmit in a second coverage area, and a first User Equipment (UE) connected to the first access point, the method including causing a reconfiguration of at least one of the first access point or the second access point to implement at least one of first transmission parameters or second transmission parameters.

Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) transmitters, receivers and transceivers are disclosed, as well as other associated devices, systems and methods. In particular, aspects and embodiments of the disclosure relate to MIMO transmitters, receivers and transceivers implemented as modules of relay devices for signals transmitted to and/or from base-stations and/or mobile-stations, in particular when such devices are implemented on mobile and/or aerial vehicles, and in particular for transmitting, receiving and/or forwarding wireless communication signals at frequencies in what is termed the 'millimeter-wave band'. In such devices, a power control unit is configured to determine an energy availability measure and/or a power demand measure and, in response, cause a switching unit to connect a plurality of RF chains to a plurality of antenna elements in different states.

This disclosure provides a method in a cellular telecommunications network, the cellular telecommunications network having a first central base station unit connecting to a first distributed base station unit, the method including the first central base station unit communicating with the first distributed base station unit using a first functional split in which a first set of protocol functions are implemented by the first central base station unit and a second set of protocol functions are implemented by the first distributed base station unit; determining that a processing resource utilization of at least one of the first central base station unit and first distributed base station unit using the first functional split satisfies a processing threshold; and, in response, causing the first central base station unit and first distributed base station unit to communicate using a second functional split in which a third set of protocol functions are implemented by the first central base station unit and a fourth set of protocol functions are implemented by the first distributed base station unit.

Operating a network node to control a first Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in a wireless telecommunications network can include determining a collision risk for the first UAV; determining a reporting rate for the first UAV based on the collision risk; and sending a reporting rate update message to the first UAV so as to cause the first UAV to report its position at the determined reporting rate. A method of operating an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in a wireless telecommunications network is also disclosed.

Unmanned aerial vehicle

A method of controlling transmission of a wireless signal in a wireless telecommunications network including a transmitting node, a receiving node, and an Intelligent Reflective Surface (IRS), the transmitting node including a processor operating a first neural network that inputs an input bit sequence and outputs the wireless signal and a transmitter to transmit the wireless signal output by the first neural network, the IRS includes a reflective surface for reflecting the wireless signal transmitted by the transmitter and further includes a processor for applying a phase change to the wireless signal according to a phase shift matrix, and the receiving node includes a receiver for receiving an accumulated wireless signal transmitted by the transmitter and reflected off the reflective surface and a processor operating a second neural network that inputs the received accumulated wireless signal and outputs an output bit sequence.

A network node for a wireless telecommunications network, and a method of operating a network node, are disclosed. The wireless telecommunications network includes a first access point having a first transmitter configured to transmit in a first coverage area, and the method can include receiving, from a sensor, data indicative of an object within the first coverage area of the first access point's first transmitter; determining, from the data, that the object is an illegitimate user; and, in response, causing a modification of the first access point so that the object cannot successfully receive a transmission from the first transmitter.

A method of determining performance of a Radio Access Network (RAN) of a telecommunications network is disclosed in which the RAN covers an area that is divided into a plurality of unit cells. The method includes receiving a measured performance value of the RAN within at least one unit cell of the plurality of unit cells; receiving a simulated performance value of the RAN within each of the plurality of unit cells; identifying a unit cell that is associated with both a measured performance value and a simulated performance value; calculating, for the identified unit cell, a difference function between the simulated performance value and the measured performance value; and applying the difference function to the simulated performance value of at least one adjacent unit cell to the identified unit cell to determine a modified simulated performance value for the at least one adjacent unit cell.

Systems and methods for operating a cellular telecommunications network. If determining that a first cell of a base station is about to reboot, performing a handover of one or more User Equipments from that cell to a second cell. After the reboot, the user equipment may be handed back to the rebooted cell. If both cells are to reboot, a determination is made to identify which cell's reboot operation is to be prioritized, a handover of the user equipment attached to the prioritized cell to the other cell is made, the prioritized cell is rebooted, all the user equipments are handed over from the non-prioritized cell to the (now rebooted) prioritized cell, the non-prioritized cell is rebooted and the user equipment that was initially attached to the non-prioritized cell is handed over from the prioritized cell back to the now rebooted non-prioritized cell.

According to the present disclosure there is provided a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) transmitter for transmitting wireless communication signals over a communication channel to a receiver, the transmitter including a digital signal processor configured to perform pre-coding on a plurality Nof data streams; a plurality Nof radio-frequency (RF) chains each configured to pass a pre-coded data stream from the digital signal processor to generate a signal representing that data stream; a lens antenna array comprising an array of Nantenna elements; and a selecting unit coupled between the plurality Nof RF chains and the lens antenna array, the selecting unit including a plurality of separate coupling units each configured to couple a respective RF chain to a selective sub-array of Nantenna elements concurrently for transmitting the signal representing the data stream passed through that RF chain.
