A stereo headphone employing a standard stereo headphone plug is adapted for automatically hearing a monaural signal at both earpieces, when accessing a typical monaural source. In the first embodiment of the invention, an impedance element couples the signal from a first acoustical driver that receives the monaural signal from the stereo plug tip, to a second acoustical driver that is connected to the stereo plug ring and normally receives no signal when plugged into a conventional monaural audio source output jack. The magnitude of the coupling impedance is selected with respect to the impedance of the acoustical driver so that the reduction in loudness at the second earpiece due to the signal voltage drop across the coupling impedance is not perceptible to the listener. This will occur when the reduction in loudness at the second earpiece is less than the threshold of perceivable loudness reduction at one ear when there is no reduction in loudness at the other ear. The effect of the coupling impedance, when listening to a stereo audio source is insignificant, firstly, because the two stereo channel signals appear at their respective drivers with virtually no attenuation due to the coupling impedance. Secondly, although the coupling impedance does contribute a slight amount of additional crosstalk between the stereo channels, the magnitude of the increase in crosstalk is dependent upon the ratio of the coupling impedance to the output impedance of the stereo source. A typical stereo source for which the use of this headphone is intended has an output impedance so low compared to the coupling impedance that the increase in crosstalk is too small to be perceptible as affecting the stereo separation or the stereo imaging afforded by the stereo source. In the second embodiment of the invention two equal impedance elements couple the monaural signal from the stereo plug tip to each acoustical driver. This equalizes the loudness of the monaural signal heard at each earpiece and slightly reduces the level of one stereo channel with respect to the other. Crosstalk and stereo imaging are virtually unaffected, as with the first embodiment.

Automatic stereo/monaural headphone

A fast acting disconnect system is incorporated with a transient voltage surge suppressor to protect the surge suppressor and the connected utilization equipment from power frequency overvoltages. A resettable circuit breaker permits reconnection after disconnecting the AC voltage source due to a power frequency overvoltage. The system is applicable to protect equipment connected to an AC source of voltage that has a phase conductor, a neutral conductor and a grounding conductor with surge suppressors connected to protect against transient voltage surges from phase-to-neutral, phase-to-ground and neutral-to-ground. The system protects against damage of the surge suppressor and the connected equipment from power frequency overvoltages as specified for testing by a recognized testing agency. A transient voltage surge of the greatest magnitude anticipated in the environment for which the system is designed will not cause a false disconnect operation. The system will respond to a power frequency overvoltage under conditions in which it is not energized prior to the application of the overvoltage.

A method and apparatus is disclosed for continuously monitoring the resistance of a grounding conductor to neutral conductor circuit of a power distribution system. The apparatus compares a parameter of a damped sinusoidal waveform from a shock excited resonant circuit coupled to the grounding conductor and neutral conductor at a branch circuit outlet of the power distribution system with a predetermined parameter from the same resonant circuit discharging into an external circuit having a predetermined resistance. The apparatus indicates an undesired grounding conductor resistance.

Apparatus and method for continuously monitoring grounding conductor

A surge protection circuit for insertion into a coaxial cable system is configured as a coaxial structure of given characteristic impedance extending between matching input and output connection. A surge suppression network is built into the coaxial housing, and includes a shunt inductor shunting the center conductor at an intermediate point to the housing. A capacity is series-inserted into the output section of the center conductor beyond the inductor. The capacitor is a plate-shaped element metalized on both faces and edge-inserted into the confronting line sections of the center conductor and soldered thereto, so that capacitor lead inductance is incorporated into the center conductor. At the passband frequency of cable television communications the reactance of the inductor is high compared to the characteristic impedance, and similarly the reactnace of the capacitor is low, resulting in negligible insertion loss to the system. At the uppermost harmonic component frequency of line surges the low inductive reactance, and the high capactivie reactance cause strong attenuation of surge signals. A pair of diodes connected between the output sections of the center conductor of the coaxial line and the coaxial housing or outer conductor provides additional surge attenuation.

Surge suppressor for coaxial transmission line

A technique based on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry is used to measure very small (1 cm or less) surface deformations with good resolution (10 m) over large areas (50 km). It can be used for accurate measurements of many geophysical phenomena, including swelling and buckling in fault zones, residual, vertical and lateral displacements from seismic events and prevolcanic swelling. Two SAR images are made of a scene by two spaced antennas and a difference interferogram of the scene is made. After unwrapping phases of pixels of the difference interferogram, surface motion or deformation changes of the surface are observed. A second interferogram of the same scene is made from a different pair of images, at least one of which is made after some elapsed time. The second interferogram is then compared with the first interferogram to detect changes in line of sight position of pixels. By resolving line of sight observations into their vector components in other sets of interferograms along at least one other direction, lateral motions may be recovered in their entirety. Since in general, the SAR images are made from flight tracks that are separated, it is not possible to distinguish surface changes from the parallax caused by topography. However, a third image may be used to remove the topography and leave only the surface changes.

An insulating battery cover is configured to be locked into place by insertion of either one of a pair of connectors making contact with the battery. The cover is designed for use with batteries having insertion-type terminals configured to accept inserted connectors. A pair of shell-forming projections are provided integral with the housing and configured to accommodate the battery terminals when the cover is in place. An aperture in each projection is configured to allow insertion of the associated connector. Portions of the cover local to the projections are provided, and arrestingly engage exterior insulating portions of the connectors to hinder removal of the cover unless both connectors have been removed.

A color converter circuit particularly suited for use with computer-steered multi-color display units accepts at its input terminals a plurality of color commands from the associated computer or other signal source, and includes manual selection means for selecting a corresponding plurality of different output color commands to be actuated selectively upon response of each different input color command to provide manual control of the colors of the generated pattern, without requiring software modification. Associated indicator lights adjacent each of the color-selecting switches indicate which colors in the form of color commands are being sent from the computer. A simplified version of the converter accepts monochrome commands capable of giving only dark and bright commands from the computer, and selectively provides optionally chosen different color commands to the display unit to correspond to each of the two input signal conditions.

Color converter

A power line transient surge suppressor circuit features a nonlinear surge-bypassing network connected to bypass line surges around electrical loads connected to circuit output terminals. A fuse is inserted in series with the network, and blows in the event of short-circuit failure of a regulator device in the network. A thermal cut-out preferably of the irreversibly actuated type is inserted in series with the suppressor circuit input. A current-limiting heater resistor connected in parallel with the fuse supplies heat to trip the cut-out after the fuse blows, thereby permanently terminating power output to the loads. A similar suppression network is provided for the earth lead in three-wire systems.

By using two SAR antennas spaced a known distance, B, and oriented at substantially the same look angle to illuminate the same target area, pixel data from the two antennas may be compared in phase to determine a difference .DELTA..phi. from which a slant angle .theta. is determined for each pixel point from an equation .DELTA..phi.=(2.pi.B/.lambda.)sin(.theta.-.alpha.), where .lambda. is the radar wavelength and .alpha. is the roll angle of the aircraft. The height, h, of each pixel point from the aircraft is determined from the equation h=R cos .theta., and from the known altitude, a, of the aircraft above sea level, the altitude (elevation), a', of each point is determined from the difference a-h. This elevation data may be displayed with the SAR image by, for example, quantizing the elevation at increments of 100 feet starting at sea level, and color coding pixels of the same quantized elevation. The distance, d, of each pixel from the ground track of the aircraft used for the display may be determined more accurately from the equation d=R sin .theta..

Method and apparatus for contour mapping using synthetic aperture radar

A carrying sled capable of conversion into a beach umbrella. The carrying sled includes a rigid dish-shaped member with wheels or rails on the dish convex surface. An annular flexible material is secured to and along the outer edge of the dish and includes a draw string positioned around and secured in the outer edge of the flexible material for drawing up the flexible material when desired. Pockets are formed at the outer edges of the flexible material for receiving a spoke disposable therein and passing through a tunnel member on the convex side of the dish for maintaining the flexible material in an outwardly extending position from the edge of the dish. A pole member is secured to the center portion of the concave side of the dish, at the pole either being of the telescoping type or formed by plural interconnecting pole members. In the case of the latter, the remaining ones of the interconnectable members are secured to the concave side of the dish when not in use. With the spokes properly assembled and pole in the extended position, the structure operates as a beach umbrella. Upon collapsing of the pole and removal of the spokes, the dish will act as a carrying sled resting upon the wheels or rails with the draw string being tightened to enclose items to be carried between the dish and the flexible material.

A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) target simulator for simulating the radar return, or echo, from a target seen by a SAR antenna mounted on a platform moving with respect to the target includes a first-in first-out memory (26) which has digital information clocked in at a rate related to the frequency of a transmitted radar signal and digital information clocked out with a fixed delay defining range between the SAR and the simulated target, and at a rate related to the frequency of the return signal. An rf input signal having a frequency similar to that utilized by a synthetic aperture array radar is mixed with a local oscillator (16) signal to provide a first baseband signal having a frequency considerably lower than that of the rf input signal. The first baseband signal is converted to a plurality of digital words which are clocked into the memory (26) at a rate related to the frequency of the local oscillator (16). A synthesizer (34) is locked to the local oscillator (16) and provides an output signal having a nominal frequency equal to that of the local oscillator ( 16), but altered in accordance with range changes between the SAR and the simulated target, as well as in accordance with Doppler information associated with return signals from the target.

Synthetic aperture radar target simulator

A manually operable pulse generating apparatus comprises a dial knob assembly having a outer grippable knob member rotatably mounted around an inner knob member connected to an operating shaft carrying a ratchet wheel-forming cam having saw-toothed ratchet teeth-forming lobes. Each lobe has a gradually rising leading side and a sharply dropping trailing side. The outer knob member is connected to the inner knob member through a one-way clutch so that the outer knob member can be rotated in one direction without rotating the inner knob member, the inner knob member rotating with the outer knob member when rotated in the opposite direction. Where the outer knob member is opaque, it contains numbered markings for identifying the degree of rotation imparted thereto relative to a stationary index mark on a control panel over which the dial knob assembly is mounted. For some applications, the outer knob member may be transparent in which case the numbered markings referred to are on the inner knob member. A pawl-forming, force-transmitting spring or spring-urged member normally rests in the crotch between successive ratchet teeth-forming lobes of the cam where it is in a partially tensed condition to form a detent for the shaft. The rotation of the outer knob member in said other direction rotates the cam and causes the pawl to ride up the gradually rising side of a cam lobe so that the tension in the pawl initially slowly increases. The tension on the spring or spring-urged member is coupled to a piezo-electric element which generates a damped sine waveform as the tension thereon is suddenly relieved as the end of the pawl falls into the crotch between a pair of cam lobes.

Manually operable rotary pulse generating apparatus for pulse counting

The controller comprises a rear sub-assembly to be mounted in a conventional toggle wall switch opening, a conventional toggle switch cover plate with a vertical toggle switch operating arm-receiving slot, the plate to extend over the rear sub-assembly and being of a size to overlap the wall switch opening, and a front sub-assembly to be mounted over the cover plate. An anchoring screw-receiving opening in the rear of sub-assembly is accessible from the front of the front sub-assembly through the cover plate slot. A screw passing through an opening in the front sub-assembly and cover plate slot anchors at least partially the front sub-assembly and the cover plate to the rear sub-assembly. A rotatable and depressible shaft extends from the rear-sub-assembly and passes through the cover plate slot and the front sub-assembly. A timer and on-off switch operating knob removably fits over the shaft to expose the screw when the knob is removed from the shaft.

Wall switch opening mounted power circuit timer-controller

A timer system includes a power switch operable to power circuit closing and opening conditions, timing means for identifying various timing segments over a 24-hour period and marker storage means having respective power turn on and off marker storage locations assigned to the time intervals encompassing a 24-hour period. An on-off push button or other on-off control operates the power switch and may act as an aid in setting the markers in the storage means. The timer system may also include a rotatable present time setting dial, also adjustable to different positions representing the different time intervals, and a manually operable timer on-off setting member. For real time programming, control means respond to normal operation of the on-off control during a first 24-hour period, initially to set said markers in the storage locations. For fast programming, the control means responds to the successive advancement of said dial from a present time setting through said various positions and the selective operation of the push button or other on-off control to set the markers in the storage locations assigned to the time interval involved, which markers automatically control the operation of the power switch when the timer on-off setting member is in its timer-on position, except when overriden by operation of the on-off control.

Timer and power control system

One form of the timer is designed to be mounted over and behind a conventional wall switch cover plate and includes a two position timer condition-setting arm, a rotatable and depressible time setting dial knob and an indicator on the front of the cover plate. When the arm is moved to a timer-on position, the indicator flashes to indicate that timer programming is needed. This may be achieved in real time over the first twenty-four hours after a 30 minute play period by depressing the knob acting as an on and off power switch control push button to turn the light circuit on and off in a normal manner. Fast normal programming is achieved by rotating the knob to various time settings and depressing the knob to set ON or OFF markers in timer memory. A full twenty-four hour programming is completed by either completing a full rotation of the knob over the full twenty-four hour time settings, with at least one ON and one OFF depression, or by a similar pair of knob depressions without such a full rotation, OFF markers then being automatically set by the timer to complete the timer programming. The indicator comes steady-on to indicate that the timer is fully programmed and in an automatic mode of operation. The automatic operation is temporarily overridden by depression of the knob or permanently overridden by a simple distinctive speed or time duration depression of the knob.
