The present invention teaches a new process to produce novel, hard, optically clear, impact-resistant polyurethane polymers that are characterized by excellent thermo mechanical properties and chemical resistance, and the polymers made as a result of such a process. The polyurethanes are made by reacting a) a prepolymer made by reacting a polyisocyanate with a primary amine-terminated polyether with an amine functionality of about 2 and a molecular weight of &#x3e;1000, and in which the free &#x2014;NCO content of the resulting prepolymer is &#x3e;18% by weight; with b) (i) a polyol having an average hydroxyl functionality greater than or equal to 2 and an average hydroxyl equivalent weight of from about 300 to about 1,000, and (ii) a curing agent that has isocyanate reactive groups, a functionality of 2 to 3 and a molecular weight of &#x3c;400. More preferably the prepolymer is made by reacting a cycloaliphatic polyisocyanate with a primary amine-terminated polyether diamine of 2000 to about 2500 molecular weight, the polyol is either a polyester polyol triol with a molecular weight of between about 540 and 900, or a polyether glycol with a molecular weight of between about 650 and 2000, or a polyester polyol diol with a molecular weight of up to 2,000, and the curing agent is either dianhydrohexitol, an aromatic diamine, an aromatic ring containing diol or a cyclohexanedimethanol.

The present invention provides amine/amide catalysts for use in catalyzing the formation of polyurethane. The amine/amide catalysts, which have low fugitivity due to their reactivity with isocyanates, and good catalytic activity, have the structure ##STR1## wherein Q is C.sub.z H.sub.2z+1, or (CH.sub.2).sub.n N(R.sup.3).sub.k T, T is a monovalent C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, amino-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, mono-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, or di-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylamino-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl group, or T is a divalent alkyl, amine substituted alkyl, alkylaminoalkyl, or alkoxyalkyl group which forms with the nitrogen atom shown in structure (I) to which T is attached a cyclic structure which incorporates up to 6 carbon atoms in the ring as well as the nitrogen atom shown in structure (I), which cyclic structure may be substituted with C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl; k=0 or 1, being 1 if T is a monovalent group and 0 if T is a divalent group; R.sup.2 .dbd.H or C.sub.z H.sub.2z+1 ; R.sup.3 .dbd.C.sub.z H.sub.2z+1 ; R.sup.4 .dbd.H; R.sup.5 .dbd.H or CH.sub.3; n=2 to 6; and z=1 to 4. 'n' is preferably 2 to 3 and z is preferably 1. Each R.sup.3 and T may be the same or different, as may each value of n and z. One specific preferred range of structures is those in which Q is C.sub.z H.sub.2z+1.

It has now been found that the use of inert gases as an auxiliary blowing agent in flexible polyurethane foams places unexpected requirements on the composition of the silicone surfactants used in such foams. Typical silicone polyalkylene oxide polyether copolymer comb-type surfactants containing greater than about 37% ethylene oxide in the pendant polyether chains cause large cells when added inert gas is used as the blowing agent.
