A heat-shrinkable bag has a means for initiating a manual tear that can be propagated to open the bag and allow a product to be readily removed therefrom, without the use of a knife or scissors or any other implement. The bag is made from a heat-shrinkable multilayer film having a Peak Load Impact Strength of at least 50 Newtons per mil. The means for initiating tearing results in a first tear in the first side of the bag, and a second tear in the second side of the bag. The first tear and the second tear are each capable of being manually propagated through a heat seal and across the bag, or down the length of the bag, with the tear being capable of being manually propagated through and to an opposite bag edge, so that the product inside a package can be readily removed from the bag. A process for making a package and manually opening the package, comprises placing a product inside the bag, sealing the bag closed, shrinking the film around the product, manually initiating and manually propagating the first and second tears, and readily removing the product from the bag.

Bag made from high-strength heat-shrinkable film exhibiting directional tear, and process utilizing same

A packaging article has tear initiators for initiating a manual tear that can be propagated to open a package and allow a product to be readily removed therefrom, without the use of a knife or scissors or any other implement. The packaging article is made from a heat-shrinkable multilayer film having at least one layer containing an incompatible polymer blend, and/or a layer containing an inorganic filler, and/or a layer having a high Young's modulus. The film also has a Peak Load Impact Strength of at least 50 Newtons per mil, The tear initiators can be used to generate a manual machine direction tears to open the package, with the manual machine direction tear being capable of propagating in the machine direction to the opposite edge of the packaging article. A process for making a package and manually opening the package is also disclosed.

Easy opening packaging article made from heat-shrinkable film exhibiting directional tear

A composite assembly useful for resisting the penetration of projectiles. The composite assembly comprises a plurality of ballistic fabric layers and a plurality of distinct films. The plurality of distinct films is adjacent the plurality of ballistic fabric layers. Each distinct film of the plurality of distinct films comprises thermoplastic polymer. Each distinct film of the plurality of distinct films has an elongational strength index of at least 800 psi.

Ballistic-resistant composite assembly

As a first aspect, the present invention is directed to a process for making a heat-shrinkable annular film, comprising: (A) extruding an annular extrudate downward from an annular die; (B) quenching the annular extrudate by applying a quenching liquid to the annular extrudate; (C) reheating the extrudate to an orientation temperature of from 130&#xb0; F. to 210&#xb0; F., resulting in a reheated annular extrudate; and (D) orienting the reheated annular extrudate while the reheated annular extrudate is in the solid state, the orientation being carried out with a total orientation factor of at least 2, so that the resulting oriented, heat-shrinkable film has a total free shrink at 185&#xb0; F. of at least 10 percent. The extrudate comprises at least one semi-crystalline polyamide selected from the group consisting of: (i) polyamide 6, (ii) polyamide 66, (iii) polyamide 6/66, and (iv) polyamide 6/12. The semi-crystalline polyamide makes up at least 5 volume percent of the annular extrudate. At least 50% of the quenching liquid cascades down the annular extrudate for a distance of at least 2 inches. The quenching liquid makes initial contact with the annular extrudate within 0.1 to 8 inches of the annular die.

Process for making shrink film comprising rapidly-quenched semi-crystalline polyamide

A multilayer, heat-shrinkable film contains at least one semi-crystalline polyamide selected from the group consisting of polyamide 6, polyamide 66, polyamide 6/66, and polyamide 6/12. The film may have a total semi-crystalline polyamide content of at least 35 volume percent, based on total film volume, and a total free shrink at 185&#xb0; F. of at least 35 percent. The film may have an FTIR Transmission Absorbance A/Aratio of up to 1.65. The film may be a retortable film, capable of being used in a process for preparing a retorted packaged product. A process for making a heat-shrinkable annular film containing the semi-crystalline polyamide comprises extruding an annular extrudate downward from an annular die, quenching the annular extrudate by applying a quenching liquid to the annular extrudate, reheating the extrudate to an orientation temperature, and orienting the reheated annular extrudate while the reheated annular extrudate is in the solid state, the orientation being carried out with a total orientation factor of at least 2, to produce a film having a total free shrink at 185&#xb0; F. of at least 10 percent.

Shrink film containing semi-crystalline polyamide and process for making same

A method includes triggering an oxygen scavenger; and storing the scavenger in a container configured such that the oxygen scavenger exhibits no substantial oxygen scavenging activity while inside the container. The triggered oxygen scavenger can later be removed from the container, and used in packaging oxygen sensitive products. A stored oxygen scavenger, triggered, is also disclosed. A method of distributing an oxygen scavenger film includes providing a tubular film at a first location, the film having oxygen barrier and oxygen scavenger layers; triggering the oxygen scavenger; collapsing the film; rolling up the film; transporting the film to a second location; and triggering the oxygen scavenger. Another method of distributing an oxygen scavenger film includes providing an oxygen scavenger film at a first location; transporting the film to a second location; triggering the oxygen scavenger; storing the oxygen scavenger film in a container; and transporting the film to a third location.

A method comprises subjecting ant oxygen scavenger to actinic radiation; and then optionally storing the oxygen scavenger in a container, the container configured such that the oxygen scavenger exhibits no substantial oxygen scavenging activity while inside the container. The dosed oxygen scavenger can later be removed from the container, if stored therein, subjected to a second dose of actinic radiation to trigger the oxygen scavenger, and used in packaging oxygen sensitive products. A stored oxygen scavenger, untriggered, is also disclosed.

Process for subjecting to actinic radiation and storing an oxygen scavenger, and a stored oxygen scavenger

A multilayer film, which is particularly suited to packaging of cheese on a Hayssen&#xae; RT packaging machine, has a first layer comprising cyclic olefin copolymer having a glass transition temperature of at least 125&#xb0; C., and a second layer comprising at least one member selected from the group consisting of cyclic olefin copolymer having a glass transition temperature of at least 125&#xb0; C., polyamide, polyester, and polystyrene. The first and second layers are on opposite sides of a tensile axis of symmetry of the film. The film exhibits from 0 to 45 degrees of transverse edge curl, a yield point of at least 1200 psi at a temperature of 85&#xb0; C., and an elongation at break of from 0 to 300 percent at 85&#xb0; C. In addition, a packaging process comprises supplying the film and placing a plurality of product units on the flat film at desired intervals, forwarding the flat film having product units thereon, while forming a tubing from the flat film so that product is inside the tubing, followed by sealing the film along its length and transversely (upstream and downstream of the product), so that the product is a discrete packaged product is formed.

High modulus, temperature-resistant film for form fill and seal packaging

A film includes a core layer including a homogeneous random alpha-olefin/cyclic olefin copolymer; and first and second outer layers including an olefinic polymer; the film having Young's modulus between about 50,000 and about 200,000 psi, free shrink between about 10% and about 80% at 240&#xb0; F., and shrink tension of less than about 400 psi, or a shrink force of between about 20 and about 180 grams, at 240&#xb0; F. First and second intermediate layers including an ethylene copolymer having a melt index less than about 2 g/10 minutes can be optionally included. Alternatively, a film includes a core layer including an ethylene copolymer having melt index less than about 2 g/10 minutes; first and second intermediate layers including a homogeneous random alpha-olefin/cyclic olefin copolymer; and first and second outer layers including an olefinic polymer; the film having properties as disclosed above.

High free shrink, high modulus, low shrink tension film with elastic recovery

A coextruded, retortable film includes a core layer having an ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer; two intermediate layers including a polyamide; two adhesive layers including a polymeric adhesive; and two outer layers including low density polyethylene, medium density polyethylene, high density polyethylene, ethylene/alpha olefin copolymer, propylene homopolymer, and/or propylene/alpha olefin copolymer. A method of packaging a product using this film, and a package, are disclosed. A retortable film includes a first layer including low density polyethylene, medium density polyethylene, high density polyethylene, ethylene/alpha olefin copolymer, propylene homopolymer, and/or propylene/alpha olefin copolymer; a second layer including a polymeric adhesive; a third layer including an ethylene/vinyl alcohol copolymer; a fourth layer including a polymeric adhesive; a fifth layer including a polyamide; a sixth layer including a polymeric adhesive; and a seventh layer including low density polyethylene, medium density polyethylene, high density polyethylene, ethylene/alpha olefin copolymer, propylene homopolymer, and/or propylene/alpha olefin copolymer.
