A document which may be a security document has a thermochromic coating which may be a thermochromic ink on the substrate of the document. The ink may include several thermochromic materials which transition from various different colors to substantially clear in appearance as the ink is warmed to various temperatures. The combination of the colors of the thermochromic materials can give the document a different color at a number of different temperatures, until the coating is warmed to the highest color change point. When at or above the highest color change temperature, the coating becomes substantially transparent and the printed area assumes the color of the underlying substrate. The coating may also include non-reactive materials of yet another color that mixes with the colors of the thermochromic materials. The document may additionally include printed indicia on the substrate that are masked by the thermochromic materials at certain temperatures, and not masked by the thermochromic materials at other temperatures.

A coating for a retroreflective document is provided which renders the surface of the document receptive to toners and inks printed thereon while not substantially interfering with the retroreflective properties of the underlying substrate. Methods for fabricating the document are also provided.

Image bonding treatment of retroreflective surfaces

A thermochromic ink composition is provided for use on security documents such as checks which provides a reversible color change in response to heat. The ink composition includes a thermochromic aqueous slurry and an ink vehicle comprising either a phenolic modified rosin and a compatible oil, a styrene maleic anhydride resin and a glycol, or an acrylic resin varnish. The ink composition is printed on at least a portion of a substrate using letterpress printing methods and provides enhanced adhesion to toner when applied to areas of a substrate which are subsequently printed with a non-impact printing device such as a laser printer.

The present invention is directed to the deliberate cancellation of MICR-readable documents by applying a penetrating ink through the MICR line of the document wherein the ink contains magnetic particles which disrupt the reading of the MICR line by the MICR reader. The magnetic particles in the ink do not penetrate along with the other ink components, but remain on or near the surface of the document. These extraneous magnetic particles interfere with MICR readers by preventing accurate reading of the encoded MICR characters and cause the MICR reader to reject such a document from normal processing automatically.

Cancellation of micr-readable documents by application of an ink

A security ink is provided containing a colored dye, a colored pigment, and a fluorescent pigment. The ink may be printed on a number of security documents such as checks and may be passed through printing devices such as laser printers without the problem of damage to the ink the printed image, or the printer. The fluorescent pigment in the ink will fluoresce when the document is exposed to ultraviolet light and may be used to provide an authentication feature.

Tri-component security numbering ink

A process for the production of microcapsules containing a core material is provided and includes the steps of providing a polar solvent, and adding thereto a dispersion of a tertiary aliphatic isocyanate and a core material in an oleophilic liquid and an amine-containing composition having at least three primary amine groups to form a mixture. The mixture containing these components is reacted to form microcapsules containing the core material. The tertiary aliphatic isocyanate preferably comprises an adduct of m-tetramethylxylene diisocyanate and trimethylolpropane. The core material may contain a dyestuff precursor which is capable of reacting with a color developer to form a color. The microcapsules containing dyestuff precursor may be used to coat a support sheet to form carbonless copy paper.
