Methods for the manufacture of 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane from 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane and chlorine are disclosed. Improved methods are provided for the manufacture of 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene from 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane. Methods are also disclosed for the manufacture of 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene from 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane and chlorine and for the manufacture of 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene from carbon tetrachloride, ethylene, and chlorine.

Methods of making chlorinated hydrocarbons

Methods for the manufacture of 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane from 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane and chlorine are disclosed. Improved methods are provided for the manufacture of 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene from 1,1,1,2,3-pentachloropropane. Methods are also disclosed for the manufacture of 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene from 1,1,1,3-tetrachloropropane and chlorine and for the manufacture of 1,1,2,3-tetrachloropropene from carbon tetrachloride ethylene, and chlorine.

A process for economically producing 1,1,1,3,3-pentachloropropane under conditions which preserve the activity of the catalyst. In a preferred embodiment, a two-stage distillation process is employed. In the two-stage process, the size of the equipment, temperature and vacuum are varied.

Provided is a method and system for separating heavy ends from a halogenated alkane in a waste stream. The method includes: (a) removing a bottom fraction containing heavy ends from a catalyst recovery unit and conveying the bottom fraction to a vessel; (b) introducing steam into the bottom fraction containing heavy ends; (c) removing a halogenated alkane vapor and a water vapor from the waste treatment unit; (d) condensing the halogenated alkane and water vapors; and (e) separating the halogenated alkane phase and water phase from the heavy ends.

Separation of heavy ends from streams of halogenated alkanes

A process is provided for the production of 1,1,1,3,3-pentachloropropane. The process comprises: (a) producing a product mixture in a reactor by reacting carbon tetrachloride and vinyl chloride in the presence of a catalyst mixture comprising organophosphate solvent, iron metal and ferric chloride under conditions sufficient to produce 1,1,1,3,3-pentachloropropane; (b) subjecting the 1,1,1,3,3-pentachloropropane containing product mixture from step (a) to evaporation such that a fraction enriched in 1,1,1,3,3-pentachloropropane is separated from the product mixture and a bottoms fraction results which comprises the iron metal/ferric chloride catalyst components and heavy end by-products; and (c) recycling at least a portion of the bottoms fraction from step (b) to the reactor.

Process for the manufacture of 1, 1, 1, 3, 3-pentachloropropane

A novel method for manufacturing 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexachloropropane. Tetrachloromethane is reacted with 1,1-dichloroethene in the presence of a catalyst comprising copper and a solvent selected from a C3 to a C5 alkanenitrile. The 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexachloropropane can be separated from the reaction by-products, unconsumed reactants and catalyst and solvent, which components can be recovered and recycled back to the reactor.

Method for the manufacture of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexachloropropane

An improvement is provided in a process for the preferential removal of chlorine from an aqueous solution of chlorine dioxide and chlorine which has been prepared by the process of reducing a chlorate with a reducing agent in a strong acid, and wherein the gases produced thereby are dissolved in water. The improvement comprises the step of adding hydrogen peroxide, oxalic acid or a salt of oxalic acid, to a cool (i.e. at a temperature of about 0.degree. C. to about 25.degree. C.) aqueous solution of the chlorine within a period of less than 2.5 hours dioxide and chlorine. Substantially all of the chlorine is destroyed with almost no destruction of the chlorine dioxide.

Chlorine-destruct method

Ferric iron is removed from chlorinated hydrocarbons having less than 6 carbon atoms per molecule by intimately contacting the latter with an oil that comprises one or more hydrocarbons having at least 6 concatenated aliphatic carbon atoms per molecule. The hydrocarbon oil is present in an amount sufficient to interact with a major portion of the ferric iron. The resulting mixture of the chlorinated hydrocarbon stream and the hydrocarbon oil is heated simultaneously with the intimate contacting, and a precipitate is allowed to form. The chlorinated hydrocarbon stream is then separated from the hydrocarbon oil and from the precipitate, and the precipitate is subsequently separated from the hydrocarbon oil, which may be recycled and re-used.
