A process for the preparation of a formylated aromatic compound comprising contacting an aromatic compound with (i) a halogenated compound in the presence of a Lewis acid, and (ii) a base, is described. The subject process provides an efficient and effective means of preparing formylated compounds which may be useful in a wide variety of applications.

Process for formylation of aromatic compounds

The Diels-Alder adduct of 2,3 and 6,7 poly(allocimene) and an activated olefin such as maleic anhydride serves to inhibit the corrosion of metals. The adduct or a derived polyamine reaction product in admixture with an oil such as a petroleum oil or grease is effective to inhibit rusting of ferrous metals.

Corrosion inhibitors

The Diels-Alder adduct of 2,3 and 6,7 poly(alloocimene) and an activated olefin such as maleic anhydride serves to inhibit the corrosion of metals. The adduct or a derived polyamine reaction product in admixture with an oil such as a petroleum oil or grease is effective to inhibit rusting of ferrous metals.

Unique Diels-Alder adducts of an activated olefin and an alloocimene polymer containing pendant conjugated double bonds were prepared. These adducts are useful as binders in adhesive, printing ink and coating formulations.

Diels-alder adducts of poly(aloocimene)

Terpene-based esters are found to be advantageous tackifiers in polymeric resin based adhesives.

Terpene-based ester tackifiers

Halogenated poly(alloocimene) is described. The polymer is useful in coatings as barrier resin, slow release material for pesticides and the like.

Halogenated poly(alloocimene)

A novel class of alloocimene polymers have been prepared which are comprised of a mixture of polymer chain units of 2,3-alloocimene and 6,7-alloocimene. The novel polyalloocimenes of this invention are prepared by polymerizing alloocimene in a reaction mixture which contains a catalyst system comprised of a metal such as sodium and an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic ether such as 1,2-dimethoxyethane. The polyalloocimenes of this invention have a majority of the residual unsaturation present in pendent dimethylbutadienyl groups. The polyalloocimenes of this invention are useful in of themselves as film forming binders for inks, as tackifiers for hot melt adhesive and the like. The polyalloocimenes of this invention are also especially useful as intermediates. The presence of the substantial amount of unsaturation and particularly the conjugated unsaturation of the pendent groups make the polyalloocimenes of this invention exceptionally reactive. For example Diels-Alder adducts of the polyalloocimene of this invention and an activated olefin can readily be prepared. The adducts which are formed are useful as binder resins in printer ink, coating and adhesive formulations.

Polyalloocimene and method for the preparation thereof

Epoxidized poly(alloocimene) is described. The polymer is useful as a cross-linker (curing agent) for polyester, polyether and polyurethane coating compositions.

Hydrogenated 2,3- and 6,7-poly(alloocimene) is described. The polymer is useful as flexibilizing agents in elastomeric coatings and as tack modifiers in pressure sensitive adhesives.

Metal complexes of poly(alloocimene) having conjugated double bonds in pendant side chains, with metallic compounds are useful as electrically conductive coatings.

Poly(alloocimene) is functionalized by reaction with an electrophile to obtain polymers useful as a film-former in a coating composition.

Terminally functionalized poly(alloocimene)

Process of polymerizing a monomer charge including ethylene by (1) drying an inorganic oxide having surface hydroxyl groups, e.g. silica, alumina, magnesia, etc. to remove adsorbed water (2) reacting the surface hydroxyl groups with at least a stoichiometric amount of an organometallic compound having at least one alkyl group attached to a Group III metal, e.g., a trialkylaluminum, (3) reacting the thus-treated inorganic oxide with a vanadium halide, such as (a) VOCl.sub.3, VOBr.sub.3, and/or mono-, di-, and/or trihydrocarbyloxy derivatives thereof and/or (b) VCl.sub.4, VBr.sub.4, and/or mono-, di-, tri-, and/or tetrahydrocarbyloxy derivatives thereof, (4) reacting that reaction product with at least about 0.1 mol, per mol of organometallic compound, of an ether-alcohol corresponding to the formula R'[OCHR'(CH.sub.2).sub.n CHR].sub.m OH, wherein R and R' are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl groups containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, R' is a hydrocarbyl group, n has a value of 0 to 16, and m has a value of at least 1, (5) feeding the product into a gas-phase reaction zone, (6) feeding a trialkylaluminum into the gas-phase reaction zone in order to form a bed comprising the product and the trialkylaluminum, (7) fluidizing the bed with a gas mixture of ethylene, hydrogen and chloroform, (8) removing polymerized ethylene particles from the reaction zone, and (9) recycling unreacted gas mixture from the top of the reaction zone to the bottom of the reaction zone.

Process for polymerizing a monomer charge

Process of polymerizing a monomer charge including ethylene by (1) drying an inorganic oxide having surface hydroxyl groups to form a support that is substantially free of adsorbed water, (2) reacting the surface hydroxyl groups of the support with at least a substantially stoichiometric amount of at least one organometallic compound corresponding to the formula R.sub.x MR'.sub.y R'.sub.z, wherein M is a metal of Group III of the periodic table, R is an alkyl group containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms, R' and R' are independently selected from the group consisting of H, Cl, and alkyl and alkoxy groups containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms, x has a value of 1 to 3, and y and z both represent values of 0 to 2, the sum of which is not greater than 3-x, (3) reacting the thus-treated support with at least about 0.001 mol, per mol of organometallic compound, of at least one vanadium compound prepared by reacting one molar proportion of VOCl.sub.3 and/or VOBr.sub.3 with about 0.5 to 1 molar proportion of a diol corresponding to the formula HO-R-OH, wherein R is a divalent hydrocarbon radical having a chain length of 2 to 16 carbon atoms, (4) feeding the product into a gas-phase reaction zone, (5) feeding a trialkylaluminum into the gas-phase reaction zone in order to form a bed comprising the product and the trialkylaluminum, (6) fluidizing the bed with a gas mixture of ethylene, hydrogen and chloroform, (7) removing polymerized ethylene particles from the reaction zone, and (8) recycling unreacted gas mixture from the top of the reaction zone to the bottom of the reaction zone.

Terpene ethers are found to be advantageous tackifiers in elastomeric resin based adhesives.
