An apparatus and method are provided for initially performing a heat treatment process on a closed channel structural member to facilitate the subsequent performance of a magnetic pulse welding process so as to manufacture a vehicle frame component or a portion of a vehicle frame assembly. Initially, a workpiece is provided that is preferably formed from a closed channel structural member having a circular or box-shaped cross sectional shape. The workpiece is subjected to a scanning heat treatment process, wherein the workpiece is heat treated in a continuous and longitudinal manner from one end to the other. Preferably, the workpiece is supported vertically during the scanning heat treatment process to prevent the shape thereof from becoming distorted. The scanning heat treatment process is preferably a retrogression heat treatment process, wherein the workpiece is rapidly heated to a sufficient temperature that provides for full or partial softening thereof, followed by relatively rapid cooling. In a third step of the method, a deforming process is performed on the workpiece during the period of time following the retrogression heat treatment process in which the workpiece retains the full or partial softening characteristics. In a fourth step of the method, a magnetic pulse welding operation is performed to secure two workpieces together so as to manufacture a vehicle frame component or a portion of a vehicle frame assembly. At least one of the two workpieces is subjected to the scanning heat treatment process to facilitate the magnetic pulse welding process.

Method of manufacturing a vehicle frame assembly

A mechanism for supporting an elongated hollow workpiece during a heat treatment process in which the workpiece is rapidly heated and cooled, such as by a induction coil and a quenching ring through which the workpiece is moved. The support mechanism includes a driver member and at least one chuck, but preferably a plurality of chucks, positioned around the driver member. The chucks are movable relative to the driver member in a lateral direction with respect to an axis defined by the elongated workpiece between an engaged position and a disengaged position. In the disengaged position, contact surfaces of the chucks are spaced apart from an inner surface of the workpiece. In the engaged position, the contact surfaces frictionally engage the inner surface of the workpiece, thereby supporting the workpiece.

Mechanism for supporting a workpiece during a heat treatment process

An apparatus and method for joining two or more vehicle components together to form a joint in a vehicle body and frame assembly is disclosed. The frame assembly can include a pair of longitudinally extending side rails having a plurality of transverse cross members extending therebetween. At least one of the side rails includes a portion that is deformed inwardly to define a mounting projection that is sized to receive an end of one of the cross members therein. The mounting projection is preferably formed having a first relatively large diameter portion that is somewhat larger in diameter than the outer diameter of the end of the cross member and a second relatively small diameter portion that is only slightly larger in diameter than the outer diameter of the end of the cross member. An internal magnetic pulse welding inductor assembly is inserted within the cross member to generate an intense electromagnetic field. The presence of this electromagnetic field causes the end of the cross member to expand outwardly into engagement with the first and second portions of the mounting projection of the side rail at a high velocity. The high velocity impact of the end of the cross member with the mounting projection of the side rail causes some portions of the end of the cross member and the mounting projection of the side rail to weld or molecularly bond together, and causes other portions of the end of the cross member and the mounting projection of the side rail to mechanically interlock or engage one another to form a joint for the vehicle body and frame assembly.
