A system for managing an assemblage of entities. The entities interface within the assemblage for control of primary information handling functions and further interface with the system to permit the carrying out of management functions. The system includes management modules adapted to carry out management functions by independently interpreting and executing commands and a kernel including a table of dispatch pointers for directing the commands to the respective modules in which they are to be interpreted and executed. In addition, the system includes storage containing domain information defining groups of entities, where the kernel may issue a command to a group by issuing individual commands to appropriate modules.

In the preferred embodiment, opposing jaws are biased closed for grasping the clasp of a string type bracelet. Prior to grasping, as the clasp is being inserted between the jaws, a post or boss asserts a reactive force against an operating lever of the clasp causing the clasp to open. While the clasp is held open, the jaws are released to grasp the clasp and keep it open. Preferably the jaws are affixed to a wrist band which when wrapped around a user's wrist holds the grasped clasp in a position to loop the bracelet around the wrist and hook an eyelet at the opposite end of the bracelet onto the clasp. When the jaws are opened to release the clasp, the clasp closes capturing the eyelet. The wrist band is then removed leaving only the bracelet around the wrist. The clip can also be used to hold earring clasps for easy placement on earring studs, and for other kinds of jewelry.

In addition, the system includes: a module adapted to independently interpret and execute selected management-related commands; stored records relating to accessed management information, each record indicating an associated time; an information manager, responsive to commands having a time schedule, for retrieving information from the records or accessing information from the entities, including a scheduler for issuing subsidiary accesses or retrievals at possibly multiple times according to the schedule; storage containing domain information defining groups of entities, where the kernel may issue a commands to a group by issuing individual commands to appropriate modules; a common command syntax including fields for identifying the entity and the operation to be performed; a module that stores rules identifying alarm conditions, including a generator for generating rules and an alarm detector for detecting an alarm condition in response to the rules; a module adapted to carry out self-management functions by interpreting and executing commands.

A network including a plurality of nodes which communicate over a communications link includes client nodes which are used by users and server nodes. At least one of the server nodes is a management server node, and other server nodes may comprise backup server nodes or software distribution server nodes. To initiate, for example, backup service, the management server node transmits a message to the backup server node to enable it to perform the backup. To initiate software distribution service, the management server node determines the nature of the service, such as downloading new versions, auditing use for licensing purposes, and the like, and transmits a message to the software distribution server node to initiate the operation. The network may include master and slave management server nodes, backup server nodes and software distribution server nodes to further divide the control of the respective operations.
